The Oorvalli Cknmkin uy the O. P. management ha the money ot the Albany people, and that U all It want. The Man About Town congratulate the people of Albany on the fart that even If thi were true this city alone, to say nothing of the county, has gotten even with them several timet. We are mote than satisHed with the bargain. The advent of the O. P. has put thousand of dollars into the pockets of Linn county people already, in one short season many time v hat It coat to get It here. O The editors of the paper mentioned shou Id slop calling the road the Oregon Pauper long enough to see the holes in their own shoes, if the M. A. T. is rightly informed Once one of them, according to his own story ate the bread handed nlm by this same 'pauper," and because the "pauper" cast him off he is seeking to make capital by throwing atones at him , tuit not even the rabble U pleased. O After hearing the Salvation Army band as it paraded the streets Sabbath the Man About Town is completely reconciled to the Chinese New Year band. The Salvationists should borrow some of the Celestials instru ments and play without practice hereafter A Flee Exraraioa. The Albany excursionist returned from the Bay Friday noon after an uncommonly enjoyable trip. Flags were hoisted in honor of the event, un marred by many accidents. The breaking of a bone by tittle Harry Sc blower, by falling while at the Ocean House, being the only one of any moment. The ride over the Coast range along the roads meandering course, was a magnificent one, particularly as the ocean was approach ed. The tunnels were passed without any breach of etiquette. When Yaquina City was reached an Immense rush was mad for the Newport boat. On account of the size of the company two trips had to be made, the "behind" ones shivering an hour in the cold evening air waiting for the ic turn of the steamer. Most of the excur sionists obtained Beds ; but some of them lept without downy pillows in a steamer, and other improvised pUccsoue gentleman at least snaring tm night awav in a hav loft. Thursday was spent in sight teeing in all directions, boat riding, etc. One couple who went for a row got stranded, and the young man had to get a team and make a circuitous route to get the voung lady te their hotel. With its rugged scenery .spien did atmosphere and good accommodations. there are few finer places in which to spend a day or even month than aquina Hav which is becoming the most popular report on the north Pacific Coast. In the evening the Albany Dramatic Company played Niagara to a good house. Friday morning all haad who stopped at Newport were awakened at about 4 o'clock and given an early breakfast. The steamer and ferrt boat were together thU time, necessitating only one trip. At six o'clock the train started homeward bound, Alhanv being reached only about five minutes late Con ductor Kennedy and his assistants are en titled to much credit for the careful manner in which they transported the company's guests. Wheat The prospects for a high price for wheat : next fall are marvellously good, according to the present outlook. In certain localities a high as 90 cents has been offered for the coming crop. That looks as if wheat will again look like gold when there i enough to make the attraction great. We rejoice over the prospect. Its only place of observance In Linn county was at Blevins brldge.one and one-half tulles west of Tangent, and eight and one-half miles from Albany according to Mr. Percey Kelley's bicycle cyclometer. Among the thousand people who attended was a Dkm.hu a 1 man, and Mr. C. L. Pierce, who was wanted to assist the Tangent Band in furnishing music. At 8 o'clock Mr. John Ceiscntnner conveyed us silently and quickly from Al bany through a beautiful and fertile farm -tng country, past comfortable homes, to Tangent, where the Hnlsey Band had been waiting since the morning train. Another ride took us to the gate of the picnic grounds, near the Calipoola bridge. Already beside the road were two tents where the Innei man could be satisfied w Ith colored candies, lemonade, pop and oranges and sand wiched between them was a Corvallis man, who recently obtained some notoriety by publishing from the Ckromkh office a little 6xtomud throwing sheet, M. L. Pipes be ing the target. He had a crowd of little wooden dolls hung on strings, and four base balls. Ten cents was the price for four throws, and every dell turned meant a cheap cigar, and four la succession n dollar, but (he dollars were rarer than of the issue of 1804 A big man should be ashamed to be in such a business, lite picnic grounds about one hundred yards from the road are nicely located, offering all the shade imag inable ; but not needed on this occasion, for picnic like It brought rain in gentle quantl- ties during the day. A stand and scats were conveniently arranged and soon a large crowd of hanpv faces from liarridmru' Halsev, Shedd, Oakville, Tangent, Albany and even Sweet Home, was on the ground TM Tangent and Halsev Bands did the tooting for the occasion, filling the woods vth melodious sounds that cheered and yadc time fiv. Each plaved well, and It Ivould be out of place to draw compartam. At to o clock Professor D. W. Jams mounted the rostrum and welcomed those present. As manager of ceremonies he in troduced J. B. McFarland, who spoke sev eral minutes on various topics of interest. Hon. J. K. Weatherford, the speaker of the occasion, was then introduced and deliver ed a stirring address on laibor Dav and its significance, education, etc., until ' Dl XMRK TIMS', when a rush wa made for well filled bask- ets which were soon emptied In tempting array in different part of the woods on table cloths with mother earth lor table. legs and chair. The Dastoca t man was fortunate in finding himself at the spread of Rev. O. C. and J. B. McFarland, regretting at the same time that he could not also ac cept the kind invitations of Mr J. F. Yates of Oakville and ex-School Superintendent Moecs. Beside the Meesrs. McFarland and their families were several jovial member of the Halsev Band. Chicken, bread and butter, pickets cake, pie, etc.. dUappeared itae a crowd from a theater. It was uni- versallv acknowledged that Ihuctt had no equal In the crowd as an Epicurean. After dinner Rev. D. C. McFarland tokc enthusiastically oa temperance and other questions and then the Oakville Glee Club, Geo. Acheson chorister, sang a couple tem perance songs with telling effect. A prize of i. y wa offered to the one, who, being blind folded, should turn a wheel barrow- around once and wheel and stop it nearest a stake. Ma ay trick were resorted to, the distance ec ret I v paced and confederate employed. Harry: Turner, of this city, though .iUcovci ed that the stake wa directly on a line with the sun, and struck it square, winning the prize. A private foot race between John Beard, of Tangent, rind Ixtgan, of Scio, for $1.50, was won by the former ; but the lat ter seemed pleased with the result. By t his time mast of the picnlcer had started homeward bound, and the ground were soon vacant. The Dcatoca AT man stop ped at Tangent on hi wav home and i un der obligation to Mr. J. J. Beard and hi estimable wife for supper. Probably In all Oregon no more success ful Labor Day picnic was held than that given under the auspices of (he Tangent Band, who are entitled to much credit for the manner in which tt pased off.
