It seems to the Man About Town that a great amount of fuaa is being made over the queation of whether some one has worn a shirt washed bv a Chinaman or not. Right here the M. A. T. wty eay that he haa been guilty of the crime several times. Had to be or go naked, and what are you going to do about it, anyway. Thia may keep ua out of gubernatorial chairs ; but the truth muat be spoken. O Did vou ever li.no any one mad at you ? And if vou have, is it not pleasant to meet the mad person and have him look at you like a volcano or thunder storm, or a wild elephant, as if he would erupt on you, send forth his lightning or annihilate you with the trunk of his wrath until you begin to feel as if you would like to be a molecule that is not affected by enraged elements. If you have not, buy an editors quill and vou will have mountains of experience, however meek you are. O Cyclones, fiymoons, hurricanes, blizzards, etc., may rage elsewhere, tilling the hearts of the people with terror ; but, bless the Willamette Valley, it knows them not. In these windy daye what can do more to make a country Eden like than an absence of these heart "quakers. O Last Saturday the M. A. T. saw a curi ous looking specimen of a boy, with long white hair and a blacking box hanging over his shoulders. Having lived where boot blacks grew he knew what it meant, and, being influenced bv the lazy weather asked for a 6hine. The fellow did not turn, but went gawkily down the street Being familiar with 'the business character of boot blacks the M. A. T. immediately knew he had been addressing an individual as deaf and dumb physically as the barefooted bearded youth "on the four quired daily ia to truth." For ten seconds we felt sort of cheap ; but collecting ourself followed up the curious looking character and not only got a good shine, paid for ; but as well a desired interview. O A little girl in the First Ward referring to a couple of neighbors said thev would be prettv good if thev were'nt so bad. The M. A. T. would call "this a Webfoot bull. o The M. A. T. has just read of an egg sucking match in Missouri between a Re publican and a Democrats. Score- Repub lican, 43 ; Demecrat, 42. Bet there are Albany boys who could beat either, and they don't know who is President. O The Man About Town hears a general expression in favor of "Vanny" Smith for Sheriff. People are going to vote for him because he is competent, reliable and knows the duties of the office completely. The two Albanies will boom him and the coun ty give him, say 400 majority. Here 'a our ballot on the subject : For Sheriff, D. S. SMI l H. O Speaking of competency and reliability, they hit J. P. Galbraith solid too. Mr. 6. is just the man for County Clerk and wilt get there by a fine majority. O Last Monday Mr Crawford had his cam era set near the corner of Ferry and First Streets to "shoot" off the procession when it should go that way, as all political pro cessions have been in the habit of doing. On account of the jealousy of the two bands only one of them struck the focus, the other with the crowd striking up a new route. As a result the members of the Mechanics Band were the only ones in the picture. The moral is plain. O The M. A. Ts ears have been full recent ly of rumors about the O. P. People should keep cool and everything will be all right eatk of "Jimmy aala. Last Saturday evening James Dannals died at the home of his parents, on Fourth Street, in this city, at the age of eighteen. About three years ago "Jimmy," as every body knew him, was taken 6ick with the scarlet fever, the seeds of which run into consumption, and since then he gradually failed until his death. "Jimmy" was a boy of exemplary habits and will be remembered kindly by old and young. He developed business qualities which would have made g thorough business man of him but for disease in the spring time of his life. Fun eral services took place Monday at 2 o'clock, and were largely attended. Browned la ike Willamette. Last Wednesday evening as the steamer "Isabel" was passing up the river about four miles above this city George Ward the fireman, in walking along the side o the lower part of the steamer, slipped and fell into the river. I! is cries attracted the attention of the deck hands, who immedi ately got a small boat out, but young Ward sank before reached. His body has not been found yet. Only his hat was secured Ward's parents reside in Washington Terri tory, and he has several uncles in Polk county, the latter of whom have been tele graphed. Temperance alliance. A County Temperance Alliance will be held in the Court House, in this city on next Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 2 o'clock p. m. All temperance organiza- ions, churches and Sabbath schools in thel county are requested to send delegates. Wfceal li t ents. Wheat has gone up to 72 cents in this city, the rise being rather of a sudden one. Farmers who have kept their wheat for once sailed in the right boat. Tba Ashland Tidingt says the fruit crop will be batter than at one time expected. Good. -11 L ..!.. ' A t ar l ead off risk. Great interest was taken In thia city Sab bath over the fish car sent out by the gov ernment, many visiting it during the day. The car arrived here Saturday evening and returned on Ite trip back Eaat Sabbath after noon. It waa In charge of J. F. Sills, of the Smithsonian Institute. Mr. Ellia waa accompanied by Mr. F. Try bom, Swedene fish commieaioner, who la on a tour through the U. S. for the purpose of studying our fisheries. The fish car ia somewhat of a curiositv, containing hatcheries, Ice boxes force pumps for keeping the water freahj etc. It left Washington on Saturday, May tat, starting out with spawn for, and young shad, taken a few days previous from the Susquehannah river, near its mouth. The trip to Albany was made In just one week, most of the litttle fish hatching on the way. Sunday morning about a million of the ahad were emptied into the river at the O. P. wharf. If we congratulate ourselvea on having ahad here In the future we will be very much fooled. All of these fish, not eaten by larger fish, will be In the lower Columbia by September. They are a salt water fish, and only go up freah water rivers to spawn. Our apology for a fish ladder at Oregon City will prevent their ever seeing these "diggings" again. About half a mil lion of them were also placed In the Col umbia at Wallula, and have ere this started for Astoria. Death mt Mra. V P arkkars, lout Wednesday evening Mrs. C. P. Burkhart died at her Itome near this city at the age of 60 years and t day. She waa taken aick two or three daye previous with the pneumonia, from the effects of which he waa unable to recover. Mrs. Burkhart was a pioneer of I851, coming to Oregon in that year with her husband, who sur vives her. She waa a woman of noble character, and leaves an influence which will long be felt Known all over thia part of Oregon, her death cauaes general sorrow. Her husband, children and relatives have the sympathy of all in their affliction. Funeral services are to be hald at 1 o'clock thia (Friday) afternoon at the resi dence of C. P. Burkhart. Rev. S. G. Irvine will deliver the sermon. A Miaaiakl rail. Shortly after midnight Sunday morning a man named James Kelley entered the back door of Mr. Zukerman's jewelry store and home Mr. Zukerman's son, laadore, was sleeping in the first room, and hearing the noise jumped from his bed and attacked Kelley. Being a man of muscle laadore easily vanquished the intruder, and sent him to dust in the back alley. The next morning Kelley was arrested and fined $5 for disturbing the peace. As he has been in the habit of spending his money tor in toxicating beverages, he failed to put up, as an alternative agreeing to leave the city. Whether Kelley was out on a drunken spree or on burglary intent is a matter of speculation. Tea Utile rfceasaata. A few weeks ago Mr. Wallace, of Leng Station, found a deserted nest of eggs laid by a Chinese pheasant. He set them under a hen and in just three weeks ten little pheasants put in an appearance. The hen ia taking good care of them. They are pe culiar little things and worth seeing. Mr. Wallace will take good care of them and allow them their liberty. If thev choose to ! take it. the same as if born wild. But they seem, to be some what of a domestic nature, and it is possible that when grown will pre fer Mr. Wallace's barn yard to the woods and field. Tfce first. Mr. William Peacock (long may he live) again crosses the line first. Last Monday his daughter handed this office a box of uscieus strawberries, the first garden straw berries of the season to appear in Albany. Delicious fruit, queen of berries, we bow our thanks for tham. Mr. Peacock haa many times placed this office under obliga tions to him for little and big kindneseand we regret that printers ink is only a smalt recompense. The headquarters for Mr. Peacock's strawberries is at Conrad Meyer's. Hired Sbaak'e Morses, Three Albany hunters were in the coun try last Sunday, seven or eight mile from the city. They were to meet at a certain point and ride home. One failed to put in I an appearance just at the minute named, so the other two came home without him eaving him to employ Shank's horses, much to his disgust. rear tired There will be four graduates from the Albany Collegiate Institute this year, Steph en Flinn, Frank and Quincy Propst and Lillie Robertson being the ones to retire from the school. Mr Clark is death on cayotes, and he never gets them mixed up with rabbits. at Joba'a Day rieale. The Mason's of Albany will give a big picnic in this city on June 24th, St. John's day, arrangements for which are already being made. Invitations will be sent through the valley generally. L,ast year several thousand people were present on such an occasion at Dallas. As big a crowd is expected in Albany. A Diaiaeated Arm. ,ast i' nday evening Bert Wheeler, a son . of Alfred Wheeler, of this city, in striking at a cow with a club.on Mr. Wheeler's farm, several miles from Albany, missed his blow, giving his arm such a forcible jerk as to dislocate it at the shoulder. He was brought to Albany, where Dr. Hill attended him. Jersey Caw Did It. A few daya ago Mr. Levi Brower was feeding a Jersey cow a few miles from this city, when the annimal suddenly raised her head hitting Mr. Brower in ths eye with one of her horns. The wound though a bad one, we are glad to know will not be a fatal one to Mr. Brower's eye sight. rtttftlitT EVlMTs. Immense storms all through the East has been the order of day. Oregon people continually congratulate themselves that they live In a country where the elements know how to behave themselves. Two or three weeks ago the Democrat gave an account of the disappearance of a cayuse pony belonging to James Elkina, of this city, and stated that there were indkra tions that it had been stolen. As a result of the use of printers Ink information came from Kings Prairie last week that a horse like the one described had been taken up there. Luther Elkins went after the horse and found it to be the one lost. It waa probably atolen by some one who wanted to get out of thia viclnity.perlupa the Eugene bank robbers, and deserted when the pur pose waa served. asa -0 im im a Teak a tala. Monday a Democrat man took a spin with Mr. Bruce McKnight after "Bill Nye." Thia young stallion ia probably the fastest now in Linn county, and haa a powerful reliable gait to hack his speed. He Is worthy of the attention of farmers who want first-class roadsters as well as workers It is well to remember that while big horses are now in demand in three or four years roadsters are likely to have their day. Novelties In imported dress goods, Boucles or Nigger heads, brocades, velyste im.il silks, laco, dress goods, ate, at Sast'L E, YotrgttfaL rimovicit ami hitlkr, These gentlemen addressed the people of Linn county last Thursday afternoon at the Court I Ionic, in this city, on so n e of the questions of the day that are now before the people for their consideration. 1 Ion. J, K. Weatherford wus appointed Chairman. Mr. Pennoyer stated that he had not been a candidate for Governor, but that the nom ination came to him entirely unsought, but having accepted the nomination he frit It his duty to use all fair and honorable means to secure his election. On the Chinese queation he reiterated his view heretofore given to the public. He regarded their presence here as an unmitigatedevil. They blast by their presence and contaminating influence the fairest portions of our towns and cltlea. They really become a burden upon the taxpayers. They constitute the one-sixth of the population of Callforula, and pay the one four-hundredth part of her taxes. As touching mohocratic or revolu tionary methods to drive them from our presence, the speaker said he was opjwiscd to all such methods. He said he U now, always has been and always will be In favor of law and order. During the Chinese agi tation at Portland he belonged to no society or organixatlon.but when hints were thrown out that vigilance committees were to lie organised he felt it his duty as a rltiscn, property holder and taxpayer to attend the meeting and use his Influence In the interest of law and order. The bold and unequivo cal stand which the meeting over which he presided at Portland took with regard to a rigid enforcement of the law allayed public excitement, and ever since that meeting law and order have held aupreme away. The speaker then showed that Mr. Cornelius, if measured by his public record, was not In sympathy with the people as against the encroachments of grasping corporations. Cornelius supported the bill to give Ben. Holladay $.v . of the money of the peo ple of Portland without anything in return, and this outrageous fraud would have been imposed upon the people of that city had It not been for the timely veto of the Govern or. Mr. Pennoyer spoke of questions of state policy, but we have not apace to refer to them, lie made an excellent Impression upon all who heard him, all regarding him as a safe, sou ml man to occupy the Govern or's office. At the close of his apeech Mr. Butlcr.can didate for Congress, addressed the audience for the apace of three quarter of an hour, devoting his time to the financial and tariff questions. His expositions of these subjects was forcible and clear. Hi treatment of the subject of the tariff was in strong con trat with that of Mr. Hermann of two years ago. Mr I hitler ta an able speaker and one wlio, by hi candor, convince. We predict Ite will make a brilliant campaign At the close of hia remark Mr. Miller, inhibition candidate for Congress, apoke. Ie is a lively, energetic, forcible talkernd entertained the audience by Intcrai.rsing hia remark with anecdotes and laughable comparison, ahile he devoted himself to the prohibition question, but when he witched off into historical and constitution al questions he soon found himself lost In a maze. It was a harmonkm crowd in a horn that went from the Revere House to the Couit louse last Monday afternoon. It consisted of the Albany Cltv Band, the Mechanics Band, Cornelius. 1 hr ring candklate for Gov ernor, one or two t ituen. a block behind being Marston. the ring candidate for State Treasurer, and further on Mc Bride, candi date for Secretary of State, Baker, candidate for Printer, being escorted by a young Dem ocratic friend, getting to the Court House by a side street The two bands, the mem bers of which do not love each other. played at the same time, both being heard in a jumble, one trying to lead the speakers up Ferry and the other up Broadalbin Street. The Albany City band came out ahead, the other band going it alone. We understand a speech waa made by Cornelius evidently a negative affair, as it consisted in hi telling what he was not. The same might be said of the speech of Marston, ring candidate for Treasurer. Mc Bride and Baker, on the State ticket and Johns on the district ticket also answered to the roll call. Mc Bride's part of the program seemed to be to speak for Hermann and weaken the orohibition l movement The nicest and cheapest line of Isdies tins abuse in town can be found st Kkad A HKowxau.'.
