to 120. My life was a burden to my
Bell and friends, I could retain no
food oo my stomach, and lived wholly
by Injections. I was a living mass of

little or no effect in deadening the
pain. For six days and nights I had
the death-premonitory hiccoughs con
stantly. My water was filled with
tube-casts and albumen. I wart strug
gling with Brlgbt's Dlseasa of the
kidneys In its last stages!
While suffering thus I racelvod a
call from my pastor, tha Rev. Dr.
Foote, at tbe time rector of St. Paul's
Episcopal Church, ot this city. I felt
that it was our last interview, but In
course of the conversation Dr. Foote
detailed to me the many remarkable
cures of cases like my own which had
come under his observation, by means
of a remedy, which ha urged me to
try. As a practicing physician and a
graduate of the schools, I derided the
idea of any medicine outside the reg
ular channels being in the least bene
fluial. So solicitous, however was
Dr. Foote, that I finally promised I
would waive my prejudice. I began
Its use oo the first day of Juno, 1881,
and took it according to direction?.
At first it sickened me; but this I
thought was a good sign for one in
my debilitated condition. I continu
ed to take il; the sickening sensation
departed and I was finally able to re
tain food upon my stomach. In a
few days I noticed a decided change
or the better, as also did my wife
and friend. My hiccoughs ceased
and I experienced less pain than for
merly. I was so rejoiced at this im
proved condition that, upon what I
had believed hut a few days before
was my dying bed, I vowed, In the
presence of ray family and friends,
should I recover I would both public
ly and privately make known this

Many methods have been proposed to
correct the ertls attending our present
system of assessment and taxation. Be
fore tbe passage ef tbe mortgage tax
law, a grievous evil existed in that
many men refused and neglected to list
their notes to tho assessor and they
tbua escaped taxattoa to the amount of
tho notes which they held. Another
evil grew out of tbe fact that large
sums owned in one county were loaned
in another county, and in oonsequence
of undervaluation, tha land mortgaged
to secure these loans paid no taxes be
cause tbey were often assessed at a sum
equal to the amount of tbe mortgage,
while the notes were taxed, (when tax
ed at all,) in the county where the
owner maided, and the land escaped.
These two evils were corrected by the
passage of the mortgage tax law. It is
now said that aaother evil exists in
this, that while mortgages are assessed
at their full value.Uuds are greatly un
dervalued, and it is now proposed to
repeal the mortgage tax law to abate
the above named evil. But this would
drive us back to the evils from which
we bavo escaped. The people aro in no
mood to turn backwards on this sub
ject. Tbey are largely opposed to the
repeal, and prcpose to look forward to
such legislation as will secure substan
tial justice to all ooneerned. Tbey look
forward to this legislature for such leg
islation as will secure equal and uniform
taxation upon all kinds of property.
Let lands and all other property be tax
ed itt their full value. L st mortgages
be assessed at their full value and in
the county where locatedjet deductions
be allowed for bonajide indebtedness
und all grounds of complaint will van
ish. A monetae elm, recently felled in
Laegaoe, li. I., was 100 feet high, and
sixteen feet in circumference two feet
from tho ground. At sixty feet ft'om
the ground fix limbs branched eut,each
raeasuiing six feet in circumference.

by deed dated July 2ml, 1879 recorded at
page 11 of book "N" lecord of dteJa of Liun
county, Oregon.
The preceeda ariaing from the sale of aaid
real property to be applied first to the pay
ment of the coata of suit taxed at the sum of
127.75-100 and accruing costs and the sam
of $150 aa Attorney's fees iu aaid suit. Sec
ond to the payment to the Plaintiff herein
the sum of $1627.13 with interest thereon at
the rate of ten per cent per annum from the
28th day of October, A. D., 1884, and the
remainder if any to be paid over to the de
fendant, E E McClure.
