Something will have to he done to punish men who keep lileg of other fel lows' newspapers, or no presidential candidate will be safe from being tab- lied in the back, as it wore, by his own friends. We have, for instance, the New York Tribune, of January Kith, 1H(;, tolling chunks of solid truths about a candidate for the Vict Presi dency, for which it has now become its solemn duty to avologize. Perhaps the Tribune will get out of the scrape by claiming that for the past nine years Mr. Logan has been under the careful training of his wife and has become a changed man under the inUueuco of curtain lectures for this protracted per tod. Hut explanations are awkard in such cases. Here is the portraiture bv t the Tribune of its own candidate : 'Pranced thereon upon the arena of the great debate like a trick mule in s oircus, or a spavined nightmare tion the tr.tck of a beautiful dream Logan, of Illinois. There was a vision of mus tacbes, eyebrows and hair piled on each other in arches ; a largo brandishing ol arms, a pose and stridulous war whoop and much as though a pioluie of the Deerfield massacre had stepped out from the pa;;es of our early histoiy, Logan took the American Senate by its large capacious ear. And then he went for his mother tongue. He smote it right and left, hip and thigh, and showed no mercy. Mwloging the great broad-ax of his logio high in air, he turned it ere it fell, and with the hammat side atruck the language of 60,900,04)0 people fair ly in the face, and Hashed it beyond recognition. Under his stroke the floor of the American Senate was spattered with the remnants of a once proud vo cabulary, and mesaengets, door -keejmrs and pages woie covered from head to Icot with the spray. In the fearfu two heurs which followed the first roar of his oration, all the part of speech were routed and put to fliaht. There were orphaned adjectives and widowed nouns ; bachelor verba driven to poly - gimy and (olygairtoua verba left lone ly , conjunctions discovered, prepositions scattered, adverbs ditbeveled and dia torted, and syntax flung into wild dis order. It was a great day for L-gan He set his teeth into the language as tho untamed tiger of the jungles takes between his mouth and paw the wrsr- iug apparel of the wayfarer, and the rippiog of it was heard through all the forest depths. It reverbrated to the uttermost end of the great oapitol, and the sluggish representatives lifted up their ears and listened to the roar with terrified awe. Some started for the scene ; but upon being told tho cause of the disturbance in the brief commun ication, "Loqan's up," turned back with full assurance that they could hear from that end of the capitol all that was worth hearing. So through two long hours Logan swung bis arms over the beads of the Senate like the booms of a government deriek, while bis cbin churned the language like a pile driver in a heavy sea, and the baftted reporters made wild plunges with their pencils to gather up his regurgitations for the printer. Ah ! Logan is s great man ; a statesman. When he throws his in tellect into a queation, whether it is of finance or self-government, or sticking to the ship, something has got to come. And you may always know where to find him namely, where be has always been.drawing pay from the government in some capacity. He lacks only fif teen or twenty thing of being an ora tor. He has lungs. The cotton goods manufacturers of New Eogland have begun a sponta neous shutting down movement for August and September, which prom ises to be of large dimension. There are. 8,000,000 spindles In New En gland engaged in tho manufacture of cotton goods.and the Arkwrigbt Club some time ago started a movement for a restriction In production, to be gin when three-fourths of the manu facturing forces should assent to the plan. This failed, the managers of not more thaa 8,500,000 splndies agreefcg to the plan, though some mills Individually restricted their out put. Tho situation of late has been a good retail trade, but Jobbers are buying only In piecemeal. There are numerous buyer in the market, but they are awaiting lower prices or fu ture developments, while the supply of cotton goods on hand throughout the country Is light not above two or three months' production. With. In the past two or three days several mill treasurers and selling agents re solved on Individual shut-downs,and probably one half of the cotton mills of .New England will be closed for thirty days, divided between August and September. The Buffalo Ball scandal is yielding substantial fruit. A Telegram to a New York paper says: On Sunday last, and on Monday evening Rev. Dr. Dandsberg and Dr. A. H. Strong, President e'f the Rochester Theologi cal Seminary and sixty-two other prominent Republicans of Rochester met and signets an address against the election of Blaine and In favor of Cleveland." Trot out a few more "head of the cloak department" stories. The are immense. DIOVT LIKK TO BR M AH ED. A young wife's husband hid flail with another woman, and the parents of the deserted ooo sought to break the news to her gently. "Are you prepared to hear some very bad news V" aaked the mother, with tears in her eyea. "Has George failed ? liar, the bank broken 1 Am I a leggar ? Tell me ! Don't keep me in suspense !" ihrieked tho wife, wringing her hands. "My poor child," said tho father, "you little dream what a blow is in store for you. Calm yourself, pray." "I know he's been down to the Board of trade squandering his money and mine. I feel it in my bones. Some thing tella me that he has pawned this bouso and my bonds. Oh, what has he not done?" "Your fortune is intaet my child,'' continued the mother, embracing her ; 'but your homo is most cruelly deser ted. George has run off with that Wabash avenue woman that you caught with him at the opera last winter." "(Joodnosa gracious!'' gasped the wife as she sank into a chair ami fanned her- self furiously. "What did you want to scare me to death foi ?" Qhimtfi - mlJ. DRNTleT AN OI TOR 4 The dentiat ought to succeed as an oarsman. He is good on tho pull. Too man who enjoys the tootheacbe "patiently ' is evidently the dentist. The dontist deserves well o" his party. He is slwsys ready to take the atump. Said the dentist, "No doubt Without (tain 'twill come out." Said the man with a grin, "That remark is tooth in." "Where is the young doctor who does not brliove in tho magic of drugs, and the old doctor, if be be a wise man who does not look upon the moat of them as mischiovous and tho minority as deserving of restrietionl" aaka a med ical wtiter. If aa much progress has been made with soy doctor as that, the public is thankful. The mors intelligent Hlaino leaders have greatjfear that tho powerful but rather silent Influenco of tho bunlne Interests of the country will be thrown against him in tho presidential con test, Thore are many reasons as uHl as open Indications that this is true Capital and legltimately-eslabli-hed business sro both very conservative.
