The Auditor of Public Ac counts shows that six millions of acres of land have been taxed away from the owners, and that the public debt, which was comparatively noth ing nt the beginning of the present regime, is increasing at tbe rate of a half a million dollars per annum. If this extravagance is not checked, many years will not pass before the Sluto will be overwhelmed with a dobt from which she can extricate hersolf only by repudiation a sover eign remedy, and a rightful one for burdens which are imposed in viola-, tion of the Constitution,, and for purposes outsido the legitimate ends of government. A majority of the carpot-baggod States will, in the end, be compelled to , apply this remedy. The Kellogg government of Louisiana bas sot the example by iepudiuting forty per cent, of the so-called debt of the State.
