A MYSTERIOUS DEATH. N The Body .fa Mas ronmd Floating la the River. Quit an excitement was caused iti our eity last Monday by the discovery of tha body of a man la the river be low Parker & Morris'B warehouse, i On Sunday evening a couple of gentle man noticed the body floating In the edge of the river, but when the proper authorities were Informed of the fact it was too late to hold an Inquest. The next morning the body which was In an advanced stuge of decomposition was tuken from the river and placed upon the bank, and, though crowu of people looked at the remains of the un fortunate man, none succeeded in rec ognizing them. The man was sup posed to have been about forty-five years of age, was five feet and eight or nine inches high, sandy complexion With heavy moustache and beard, slightly intermixed with gray, and had on when found a new suit of dark clothes, white shirt, white woolen un derclothing, and a pair of boots. In the pockets of the clothing were found ten dimes, two white hankerchiefs, and the fine part of a common comb no papers or anything else by which the corpse cojld be identified. In the absence of a Coroner, a jury was em panneied by the Justice of the Peace for this precinct, Jos; Hanuon Esq., which, after investigation, brought in a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to his death by drowning. It is certainly not a murder, as there are no traces of violence upon the body, and there is no way of telling whether it is a case of accidental drowning or sui cide. From the fact that nobody hal been missed from this community it is apparent that the body must have flouted down the river, and when the discriptlon of the deceased is circulated through the upper part of the valley the body may be Identified. Among the touching scenes at the in terment was the'presence of the aged mother of the deceased, who, although bearing iipoii her grief-stricken face the furrows of over fodr-score years of Time's heavy plowshare, had; in the last years of her advanced life, fol lowed tbis, her only c'Hlld, to his far western home, only W see him laid to rest in a strange land and In ihe Im migrant's lonely sepulchre. We this week received a visit from Geo. W. Yocum, Esq., who has recently arrived from Albia, Iowa, and entered upon the practice of the law in Portland. From our early youth we have known Mr. Yocura, and can cheerfully commend him to the people of Portland as a talented gentleman, an able lawyer and a bril liant orator. Ills associate, Mr. Robb, is also an old and valued friend of ours and we know him to be fully- able to "hoe hij row," with the best in his profession. . ' Gone to 'Frisco. If our fair young friend, Miss Bovla Alexander, is not the most successful manager ot equine quadrupeds, she thinks she can at least drive fast enough for all practical purposes. The other evenirig, while she was driving from town to her fath er's farm, ihe team became excited, or anxious for their regular oats, and started hbme on "Goldsmith Maid," time, only permitting tliej carriage wheels td touch the extremely elevated spots iti the road. The fair young driver tried to ride for a while, but finding the enterprise nib're enlivening than safe, jumped out, still folding the lines and attempted to check the fleet steeds In their wild career. But they wouldn't stop; they were headed for those oats in their bwri stalls, and con tinued to go for them with undimin ished vehemence. The young lady let 'em go, and mounting another horse which she procured from a neighbor ing farm louse, came up with' them about two miles further on the road, where A man had headed tbfein off. The carriage and harness can be mended so they will do to slosh around Doc;s farm with, but they wouldn't do for a Prince's retinue. . ' Balloo'8 Magazine for Septem ber. Match tier, if you Can. U'e have a young lady compositor In tills office, who, on the third day after she entered the establishment as an ap prentice, set up twelve sticks (one col umn) of type, with scarcely a typo graphical error in the whole column. The seooud day of rer advent into the dtlice she distributed acoluriin of type, doing the work almost as "cletnly" as an experienced jour. During a con tinual typographical experience of eighteen years we have never known any other apprentice to equal this progress of "our girl;" and we chal lenge the craft anywhere to "match her if they can." (Now look here. h'ovs! we didn't mean the sort of "match" you're thinking of, so just dry up your snickering. Severely H?rt. Last week Rev. Jnb. Dick, of this county, "met with a painful accident, while in company with a surveying party on Beaver Creek, Benton county. While one of the axe-men was engaged in cutting away some tlnfber the axe came sud denly around just as Mr. Dick stepped in the way, cutting his right aukie to the bone and occasioning such a co pioqs flow of blood as to cause the suf ferer to, be carried to a neighboring house for assistance. At last accounts it was thought the Kev. gentleman would rabidly recover. Presto, Change. The Dallas Re publican has kerflumlxed, flattened out, flabbergasted, collapsed quit; and the Dallas Itcmizer has arose out of the ruins, with Messrs. Casey & Ham mond as editors and proprietors. Mr. Hammond ("Balsam," as the hoys In this office used to call him,) am) his partner, whom we don't personally know, are making a most excellent little local dodger out of the Jtemizcr, and we wish then all good fortune lb their enterprise. Squire Arnold'has had his Job wagon newly painted and upholstered, and now rides like Jupiter on his thunder clouds, regardless of expense. . 'D n the ground-squirrels" is what a Benton county man writes us iu answer to our dun for subscription. The remark is pathetic but suggestive. We found something new in the papers the other day the "Beecher Tilton Scandal" was what they called it, but.we don't know whether he died or not. . Our worthy postmaster has a very suggestive sign posted up near the letter-box In the post-officer Wo don't doubt It, Perry; but we dldn't,think yoil would speak right out in mectin' that way. Who says we havn't a weather prophet in this city? Here is what Calaporila Pete prophesies about the weather: " M3bho snow next week; j mebbe heap damn hot," j Dr. Alexantler was able to be on our streets again last week, but looks iruieh worn by his recent severe Illness. We earnestly hope he may now speedily regain his former rrtbust health. A love letter was picked up on the street the other day In which the writer calls his Dulceana a "swamp angel," and signs himself her "ever faithful, Sweet William." BRIDGE ACROSS THE BANTIAM. The Increasing demand for a bridge over the North Fork of the Santiam liver, in order that the farmers of this locality may be placed iu closer prox imity to the main lines of .transporta tion runnlug through this State, is be- cdming more and more apparent. It is a fact, which only needs to be men tioned, that the wealth of a country depends almost entirely upon the de mand of that which it produoes. This is the case not only with nations and States, but Is equally as true of smaller and more isolated districts. The old doctrine of Political econo my that demand and supply must of necessity be in equilibrium, is being so clearly , and forcibly shown in these days of railroads and canals, that men, and especially farmers, are giving the subject more attention at tills preseut time, than at any period in the past, The by no means inconsiderable dis trict of country known as the Forks of the Santiam, is a great agricultural region, and is as well adapted to the producing of vast;quantities of grain, as to the growing of fine herds of stock. Now, since our granaries will be full, this .Fall, of wheat and , oats, which we shall offer for sale, the question will be, Is there any demand? Of course, there is demand now, and men are riding through the country trying to engage our grain. And if we refuso .o engage to them, they ask us to store with them Jon Certain con ditions, until we shall have succeeded In producing such an equilibrium be tween the laws of demand and supply as will Justify us in selling our grain. But where are the farmers of the Forks requested to store their grain, if they store; or to deliver it. when they sell? Where are the compelled to haul it when they dispose of it either by sale or otherwise! To the. railroad, of course. So far all is legitimate and right, and the shortest and best road to the track on the other side is the oue to take with your loaded wagons and teams. But if you sell now you may uot get the highest price that your grain may, after waiting a while, bring. Then, what will you do? There are but two alternatives; and these are either to store at some available point, and tnen to wait until the price is reas onable, or to let your grain remain in your barns till you see fit to dispose of it. Now, which of these alternatives will you take? I say store. And fur ther; store at Jefferson. Why store at Jefferson? Why store? Because your rain must go to the track any way. and you had better haul it before the winter mills set in and render the roads and river almost, if not quite, impassable. But the question further arises, Why store your grain at Jefler-. sou? Simply for two reasons: The first and most important is, you will then have two lines of transportation in stead of one, which is better for rea sons clear and impressive; the second is, because, Jefferson is the most avail able point iu two aspects: It is the nearest point for the greater number as good a road anil those with whom you store will pay your ferriage. Now, having slit wn that the farmers of the Forks should store their grain at Jefferson, if store lit all, and haul It there when they sell it, we proceed to the main question of a bridge across the North Santiam at or near Green's ferry. It is a question that we shall tako as admitted, that, where there is a river that is impassable for a great portion of the time, a bridge. If it can be had at an available point, is far, yes Infinitely better and more safe tbau a ferry. The difficulty of building a bridge across the Santiam Is all overcome when a place is found where there are no intervening sloughs; and the land Is sufilclculy elevated to rise, above the level of ordinary high watermark. All these advantages are met with at the point we have mentioned. Incase of intervening sloughs, the trbUhle Is this: the Santiam heing a rapid stream, Is like to, from the effect of the vast amount of drift-wood that runs in it, change its channel, and where there are no sloughs, the chan nel is very apt to remain fixed. A bridixo at the point before men tioned can be erected, we think, for ten thousand dollars, and my opinion is that the money can be raised. At least let some onej make an efforc in that direction.' Such an enterprise as tills, if successful, will be tl e making of the town of Jefferson; and we pre dict that Its beneficial eflects on the Province of Canada, will be felt till the latest time. . , W. R. BlLYEU. Bit Si-EC. Doc Gray and John Millard are going Info a big specula tion.
