" FRIDAY . JUNE 21, 1872. SCISSORING. A roper in The hangman. A spring bed A bed cf radishes. All time belongs to us, for all time : is hours. Motto for an old bachelor Be just and fear knot. Going on Circuit Taking a turn -on the treadmill. "Where to find Eternal Springs in the circus business. Can a man whose head is level be said to be on a high plane? A Knight Templar A man who sleeps on the church steps. If a biicklajer were called a brick he need not feel mortar-lied. A student defines flirtation to be attention without intention." "What is better than a promising young man? A paying one. Music is the food of. love beef and mutton that of matrimony. A doctor calls his dog Chinchona, on account of the bitterness of his bark. Men who frequent drinking saloons are most of their time in a tight place. A farmer gathers what he sows; while a seamstress sews what she . gathers. An arch young lady is said to bean archer, for she can bend her beau as she pleases. The best way for ladies to invest their spare, change is in a pocket on the left side. It is a paradox that you increase the value of a unit tenfold by adding nothing to it. Early rising was once an indication of thrift, but now it indicates that a man is thirsty. A blushing beauty says that among other "sports of the nnsr may be included weddings. "I follow in the wake of the baby," as the mother said when disturbed by her infant at night. An exchange, noticing the mar riage of a cotemporary, wishes him posterity and happiness. "Good morning 'square. Got . anything new?" "Yes, I've got the neicralgia, and it hurts terribly." Paradoxical isn't it That some as- cents are decents. . A trip-op, for - example, brings you right dawn. The man that bit another man's : nose off in an affray, is said to have taken a prominent part in the fight. Josh Billing3 says: "The best way I kno ut to repent uv enuy . thing iz to do better the next time." "What is the difference between a - tube and a foolish Dutchman? One is a hollow cylinder and the other : is a silly Hollander. Then and now A lady said that before she wa3 married, her husband was a riddle to her, but now he was When a house burns down it burns up; when you drink a glassful . you drink it empty, and when you take a car it takes you. "Will these goods wash? asked a lady of a dry goods clerk. "No," replied the waggish salesman, "you will have to wash them ." A St. Albans lawyer has discovered that '-'when we look back in the un tiodden paths of the future, we be hold the footprints of an Almighty nana. The Bishop of Wurtzbarg once asked a sprightly shepherd boy: What are you doing here, mjr lad?" "Tending swine." "How much do yon get?" "One hundred florins a week." "I am also a shepherd, but I have a much larger salary," continued the Bishop. "That may be; but then I enppose ; you have more hogs under your care." uoutLli PHILLIPS Ox THE SITUATION. Wendell Phillips takes a gloomy view of the political situation, as will ' be seen from the following letter to a Reform leader : Boston, May 6th, 1872. Dear Powell: I wish I could aid " in the discussions of your Reform .. League at this important moment. Old parties are breaking to pieces. New ones are to form on 6ome of the issues you propose to discuss. Whether Grant or Greeley, or who- ever else is elected, this is the last time the Republican and Democratic parties, as such, will take part in a Presidential canvass. Whichever party succeeds, both die in the effort. Whether the Cincinnati Convention fails or triumphs at the ballot-box, one thing it has doneit has scattered forever the Republican and Demo ... cratic parties ; killed both. The Presidential canvass of 1876 will turn on new questions I think on the relations of capital and labor; the condition of the working classes ; the injustice done them by law, finance, injustice which is the root of poverty, prostitution, intemperance and crime. May your discussions ripen public -opinion for this new crusade. : ? . "- , Yours, heartily, Wendell Phillips. 1 Come Down, Father. Some one "has pbaraphrazed the song, "Dear .Father Come Home," as follows: "'Oh father, dear father, come down with the stamps, my dressmaker's bill is unpaid and she said she would . send it right home from the shop, as .soon as the flounces were made. My new dress from is down in the hall, the boy will not leave without nav TVe nothinor t enort. with j j - - - -s -t can't go to the ball, so please send the jsnopooy -awayi wirae aown, come -down! Oh father, dear father, come down with the stamps, my .ourls are hot ht to be seen the .hair dresser said he would not do them ap unless I na v him fiftppn TTe on! v asked tweDty to give a new set and take the :pia aair in excuange oesiaes, pa, my 'watertau s awtui rough, and ' so - my bacK liair will look strange.
