Editor Democrat : The Central Association held their annual meeting at MvMinnville last week and transacted their business with a degree of harmony that prom ised great good in the labors of the en suingyear. The introdueto A sermon was delivered by R. C. ,11111. The fol lowing officers were elected: Elder Junsaker, Moderator; C. II. Mattoon, Clerk; A. Ill Stanard, Treasurer. The Association inaugurated initia tory measures to have ministers sus tained as Evangelists, that more eHee tual gospel labors may he performed. Suitable arrangements were made to facilitate and encourage the enterprise of endowing the McMinnville College which inspires all concerned with gfleat hopes of success in making the College an enterprise of mutual inter est to all the denomination iu Oregon and Washington Territory. The Association endorsed the labor Cf the agent of tne school jnd directed And authorize him to continue" the canvass until the endowment was se cured. The success of the general agent has b"u satisfactory and ha is cordially commended to the people in terested in the College enterprise. The location of the College in Mc Vinnville is certainly very appropri ate. The village, surrounded as it is tled by industrious farmers who ossess line estates and lileral hearts and are ready to assist freely in building up a good school in their healthy location, where the young may breathe pure air and look on Nature's rich variety of scenery, and thus keep the mind in a healthy condition to obtain and re tain useful knowledge. The school has been of a Ka'acter to give general satisfaction under the care of Prof. Eobb. TJ'hen looking on a school of this character, with an ex lerienced teacher and scores of intel lectual, orderly, promising young per onsi we are forced to the conclusion that the yoirag people ef Oregon are, or should be, deeply in the sympathy of eveTy christian heart, for imne but a cold heart ik! a dull perception oould fail to perceive much to appre ciate in the youth of our country. R. C. J! ILL. Horses in Tkaixixg. Throvsgh the politeness of J. Z. Crouse, Jl-j., we took a spin to the Fair Grounds last Monday, for the purjiose of interview-! ing the horses that are ia training for the coming July races. We dug up the following items in regard to the matter: Mr. Ross, of Tehama county, California, has two running hrse in training which he brought from that State a few weeks ago. One of them is "Hiram," a trim and elegant 3-year old sorrel, of the Lodi stock. Theoth r is "Trifle," a bay, 4Jycars old, sired by Norfolk a superb animal, awl looks like she could beat lightning Just a leelle. Mr. Ross also haa in training a 'fine trotting mare, "Mary Eva Crouse," who is claimed to be able to go in a 2-mile heat race of go on time. Wm. Gird is training his- own horses, ' Buckskin Bill" and "Ploughboy," both of whom have, goori reputations among lovers of the turf throughout the State. Mr. Gird tit also training "Bones," a trotting gelding belong-; ing to J. Z. Crouse, and Albany Boy," a 4-year old trotter owhed by Cbas. M. Cartwright. Frank Parton is training a roan trotter wifti which he expects to get away with everything; and S. Montgomery has three trotters in training, named respectively "Min nie," "Dolly harden" and "Xnme- Iss." Tht hf cellent condition and will doubtless be -able to make the contest for the various purses very exciting. The track is in "the best condition, we have ever seen If. QTlfl Tw 'frFlliaa ' lino . Imn ovuiftiii I pains to place the grounds in excellent order for the acebmmodation of" those who will attend during the races. Huge sport may be .anticipated,; and "We advise all to come and take a hand in the festivities and eujoynaents of the occasion. Cotswold Sheep. Ye direct the attention of the wool-growers of Ore- -gon to the advertisement of J. S. Tol ton, Esq., who has just arrived from Ontario, Canada, with a fine lot of thoroughbred Cotswold bucks which he offers for sale on the most reasona- 1. 1 . ry . i. t i the depot in this city. Mr. Tolton started from Canada with fifty head, ( but disposed of several on the way. They are all yearlings save three who are 2-year olds and the most magnifi- cent animals of the kind we have ever een. They beat the famous "Darby Earn" of song notoriety alt to smash. We have examined a specimen of the wool which is over a foot in length and of the finest texture. The bheep will probably yield from 15 to 20 pounds of wool to the hear. It is worth the time and trouble of any one to make a visit to the corral of these heep, whether they desire to purchase or not. IPe would like very much to see the whole band purchased by wool growers of Linn, as we are satisfied tne investment would be &, good one and the propagation of the stock tt vuiu uc ticuiuiuHj w our county. , - , Albany Collegiate Institute eloses Friday, June .28th. TlIK AID OP The good people of the classic regions ot Soap Creek, Benton county, are! greatly excited over a singular phe nomenon in spiritualism which has bien developed wfthin tho past Week, anl' by which a trio of individuals have been suddenly elevated from Indigence and ptnury to comfort and even nlllu ence, ou a modest scale. Tho circum stance, striped f all useless verbiage and sensational rhetoric, is as follows : Immediately opposite this city, on tho Benton co'inty side of the river, resides a family wlrooo members arc well known believers in spiritism two or threo of the young iiicu of the fam ily being what are toni monly known as "mediums," possest lnT tho blessed privilege of being in freq uent inter course with tho . spirit o.T departed mortals, and from time to tinio receiv ing communications of more or less importance from these invisible ut re markably M-atchful and observ ing 'u pcrhumaniUirians." Among the ma ny spirits whiebhave recently intcrv"ewvd one of the mediums named was tint o. a nau-oreeu wno claims the hono.1 or having been hanged aloiit fourtefcn years ago for the murder of a miner whose plethoric bags of gold dust the murderer much did covet. 'The spirit told the medium that after he hail committed tho bloody deed, and bo:ore he w'as apprehen led by the relcntlM" minions of the law, he had deposited the bag of gold-dust (amounting to the magnificent sum of fourteen thousand dollar) in an old boot and hail buried it on the margin of a certain little brook, at the root of a mammoth tree, beside an Indian trail, on the Farm now owned by M. C. (Ulloway, located about six miles west of this city near tho meandering waters of ths deter gent stream known and reeordvd upon the majs as Soap Creek. i; Having implicit faith ii : he Infor mation thus imparted hy ,tbo. accoin modating spirit of the defcujotii half breed, our medium took jWnple of friends into -his confidences ntircd their companionship and ussLtanee in the enterprise, and on last Friday night, wlu-n all the inhabitants of Soap Creek were w rapped in slumbrous re pose, the trio of nocturnal "gold hun ters," w ith picks and shovels silently wended their moon-lit way to tho jHt so accurately described by the 'ulf-and-'ulf spirit, aiuiafterassuring them selves, by the closest scrutiny of the landmarks, that they had not mistook thcsiot, they silently an l prayerfully 1 invoked the continued ai l of the ;al-i lows-freed spirit broken tliro::L!i flu i:irtijillv iL-vm wl i baz and b,K,t and were attempting to ! asuin assimilate with their mother i earth. We hare related Uk; erwu incident ju-t a it wm relatl ton, and while We cannotconfidcntly vouch for Us truth, we can-safely a-1 sert that onr rnformants are persons of uaimpeachabje integrity and truthful ness of character, and appear to believe implicitly in the actual truth of the circumstance narrated. We can only say thi$ If the phenomenon is an actual occtMiJence we fdiall always have a deep and abiding dwguKt for the spirit of that murderoud half-breed for not giv ing us an equal show for that buried treasure with those other fellows who were no nearer related to him by the ties of con.sansruinity and with whom he was not even on imbibing ternw while his spirit still inhabited his Dol ly Varden eorjjus. That spirit can oih ly receive the endorsement and sup port of these columns by giving the treasure finders a revelation to divide with us, or by revealing to us another hole where a like sum may b un earthed. If that spirit doesn't want to be shown up in his true light he had better "come down" handsomely with a valuable revelation to the shover of this quill. Subsidy is what we want or we will ruin that half-breed cpirit's business if it takes all summer. A Failure. The Corvallis and Al bany Base Ball Clubs did not play their third tournament last Saturday; as was announced. The reason was,, that the C'orvallis club would not agree to play on the 3onmouth grounds, but insisted 6n playing the game on their own grounds. Our Albany club, being the challenged party, had a right to the choice ot grounds, and chose the Monmouth Jrounds because they were entirely neutral. "We presume this will end the' match between these clubs. Dentistry. See the card of Dr. E. O. Smith elsewhere.
