for Imoaat. V- SATURDAY ....MARCH 21, 1868. A Vexatious Disappointment Mark Twain says that while at Naples hg " poked around and examined a hun dred points of interest with critical im becility." The Grotto of the Dog, how over, claimed his chief attention, and his visit to it is described in the following language. .- - ' "Krerybody has written about the Grot to del Cane and its poisonous vapor, from Pliny down to Smith,' and every tourist has hell a dog by the legs, to test tho ca pabilities of the place. The dog dies iu a minute and a half a chicken instantly. As a general thing strangers who crawl in to sleep do not get up until they are called. . And then they don't cither. The stranger that ventures to sleep there takes a permanent contract. I wanted to see this grotto. I resolved to take a dog and holl him myself; suffocate him a lit tie and time him suffocate him some more and then finish him. Wo reached the grotto at about three o'clock in the afternoon, and then proceeded at once to make experiments. But a not an import ant difficulty presented itself. After I had taken off my coat and bathed my handkerchief with cologne and tied it over my faee, aud got all ready, and was wrought up to the highest pitch of en thusiasm, I recollected that we hadn't any dog. This toned me down some. Well, we thought the matter over, and conclud ed to go baek to a house, about half a tuile away, where I had seen a dog, and ee if I eould borrow it. Brown grum bled a gxd deal, for the day was hot ; but my interest was hot, too, and we started. And so we tramped, tramped, tramped, till I thought we had walked ten miles, and at last we reached the house, almost fagged out. We sat there md chatted awhile, and dropped gently into the subjeet of the dog. and found that the woman who owned him was pre judiced ngainst loaning him out to be ex perimented on with poisoned air. It was singular, but we had no time to discuss the foolish prejudices of "them pheas ants," Browa calls the peasantry, and so vre just bought the dog out and out, and started back. It was a long pull and a weary one. Pull is the eorrect word, be cause the dog didn't want to come, so we had to haul him, turn about, by a long rope he had about his neck, Sometimes that dog would sit down and brace bis fore-paws, and it took both of us to start him; and when ha did come he would come with a yelp, a skip and jump, and then he would prance about twenty steps to the right and tsrenty to the left, with his paws in the air and his eollar half over his ears, and eavort around and car ry on like a lunatic. And Brown would "rair back." oa the rope and sweat and swear. He swore at me, too, for wanting to take the trouble just to try some fool ish experiments. Well, toward sunset we got the dog to the place, and I took off my coat in a fever of excitement, and rolled up my sleeves, and saturated my handkerchief and tied it over my nose. And then just then, after all my troub le and vexation, the dog went up and .smelt Brown's breath and lay down and died." Transplanting in toe Night. A friend, in whose powers of observance we have confidence, informs us that the last Spring and Summer he made the follow ing experiment: He transplanted ten cherry trees while in bloom, commencing at four o'clock in the afternoon, and trans planting cue each hour, until one in the morning. Tho$e transplanted dHrinjj day light shedtheir blossoms, producing lit tle or no fruit, while thoae planted during the darker portions maintained their con dition fully. He did the same with ten dwarf pear trees, after the fruit was one Ihird grorn. Those transplanted during the day shed their fruit: those trans planted during the night perfected their crop, and showing no inj cry. from having been remove !. With each of these trees be removed some earth with the roots. Working Farmer. Effect of Bad Seed. How slight a thing will sometimes hare a serious effect. For instance, the farmer prepares a large field of corn, plants it with-bad seed, as is so often done, and the labor is all for noth ing. He has to plant over, and then he vill get a late erop ; the drought will ef fect it, and simetimes the frost. If a third planting is necessary, as is sometimes the case, the matter is still worse. With wheat and other grains, the crop is gener ally a failure. Planted at the right time a re-sowing must be too late, and thus defeats the whole crop. Now, with a lit tle care good seed may be had, and then all this evil will be avoided. Is it not sheer carelessness ? We cannot be too careful in getting ripe, sound, healthy seed. Rural World. New York, March 12. Tne World's At lanta special says the Constitution adopted in Oeorgia provides for the removal of the cap ital to Atlanta, and this instrument never shall be amended so as to deprive any person of political or civil right by it conferred." The organization of the military shall be subject to the authority of Congress, and all persons may vote ex cept those disfranchised. New Orleans, March 12. Bear this in mind, that the secret of the success of my Thoracic Balsam lies enclosed in this little nut-shell : first, it does not irritate the lungs and cause the patient to expectorate j second, it does commence at once to heal the ulcers : it soothes and allays the inflsmation, and stops the coughing and expectoration ; it strengthens and encourages the patient, and, with prcper nourishment, he must recover. This medicine don't give you new lungs ; it only mends up your old ones, and, with care they may take you away on into a good old age. I connot close without saying a word to my own sex. I am now in my sixty-first year, and can truly say that with all my experience with female diseases, I have found it the safest and best reme dy, and no woman ir. delicate health should be without it. Dr. Aycr truthfully remarks that lc.s than one-half of the females of the United States have sound health, and the condition of the disor dered ones is leaving its impress on the rising gen eration. Then, bow important we should have a remedy for these evils. For painful or suppressed menses, irregularities, eta., and also fr women at the turn of life, and frail girls, this medicine will be found invaluable. It should also be used be fore and after confinement. "An ounce of pre ventive is better than a pound of cure." Remember, kind father, or fond husband, when administering my medicines to a darling daughter or trail wile, that tbey are composed of no death dealing minerals or nauseating drugs, to make the sirk more miserable and hasten their untimely end : but they are a compound of medicinal roots, herbs, barks, blossoms, etc., with whoso generous healing virtues years of experience have made mo familiar.
