Advices fro New York state that since December 1st the general advance on teas has averaged at least Ave cents, gold, per pound. Importers are of the opinion that this advar.ee has not in the least discounted the effect of the anticipated duty, and that if a duty of ten oeute, cold, per pound, is levied, it will result In a corresponding ad- j Twice in tlie market. The stock on hand and to arrive is much lower this year than last. On December 20th the stock in the New York market was but 8.233, 161 ft;., and 8.000,000 tbs were reported afloat, bound for that port. Art year, at the corresponding time, here were 13,300,000 its on hand and .i,700,000 ft, afloat. There is every j .rohabllity that the proposed duty. If dried at all, will be put on at once, j in order to apply on the H.OoO.000 Hs. j now on the seas for Sew York. Coffee has also taken a decided upward ten dency, having advanced, on an aver age, about four cents, gold, per pound during the past few weeks. In this article, as in the matter of teas, the importers' explanation is a short crop and not any discounting of the antici pated duty. Only about 50.000 bags are on hand nt all the ports not more than half a month's supply. It Is deemed that adulteration will step in to keep the prices down from any very fxcefwively high figures even if a ueavy duty is put on. Rumor says tliat the problem of the cn-education of the sexes is to lie solved by a Pennsylvania college, which just . now Is rithtffrobttest about divulging Its name. The process is simply this : a department of cookery is to be estab lished, a great kitchen to be built as an adjunct to the college, and the young lady students, after learning their lessons In Greek, Latin, mathe matics, etc.. are expected to prepare dinner for the whole establishment. This h the penalty they are to pay for doyi? the etlooatlonal privileges of rfca institution ! We tuDDOse that each isMr tlv hut, oook will receive the Cjpee (.
