Irvine, on Monday, Oc tober 18th, 1869. Under the guidance and teachings of these two able gentle men and finished scholars, with a corps of competent teachers, the ensuing col legiate year should be the most prosper ous and profitable the Institute has en joyed since its establishment. The in ducements offered by this college, in the possession of teachers of such high mortJ reputa'-ion and literary ability, together with tho low rate of tuition, .the cheap mess of living, board being but S4 per weei should induce a Urge attendance of trip, vonn-r ladles and srcntlemen of T J O Linn and adjoining ' couuties during 1869-70. Mr. Douthit is engaged in collecting statis tical information in regard to Aha pro ductions f Lisa county, for the Agri cultural Departmental Washington City, and a report of the number of bushels of wheat and oats threshed, by parties run ning r machines, will greatly aid him in getting an' accurate report of the num ler of bushels raised in Linn county the past season. This is one of tne most complete ana tnorough estab lishments on the Pacific coast, and as euch is rapidly gaining in popular favor. ; Medicated Soap. Last Saturday . Mr. J. W. Watson left with us a sample of soap j which he is .engaged in intro ducing, I recommending it not only for the usual purposes for which soaps are used, but as being specially efficacious in removing "grease spots" and stains from clothing, reniovin pimples from4 the skin, and as having no superior in clean ing eilks, laces, ribbons, etc. So ' far as ' we hare tried it, it proves to be all it is recommended. Sold by all druggists and grocers. "-. -'''S. Going East. To the5 regret of their many friends, 3. Bar ro way Esq., and family intend starting East in a few days Mt. Barrows has been actively engaged in 'business in our city for many years has saw Albany grow from almost a mere "trading post to a flourishing city. Tat ing an active and prominent part in her ; growth and " prosperity, and conducting business in an honorable and straight' forward manner, he has made many warm personal friends, who will be sorry to hear of his intended departure from among us. We , are inclined to the opinion, however, that his absence - will be of short duration, and that he will find no place that seems so much like "home" as Albany. Mrs". Walter Monteith and Mrs.. Sam'l Althouse will start East at the same time, on a visit. . They have - our best wishes for a pleasant and safe journey. . t Brief MeNTio.v. Rev. N. Sere throat, colds, final complaints. &c, are some of the ills afflicting our people now-a-days. Melons, plums, green corn, apples, a few grapes, squashes, apples, tomatoes, may be had in our market in profusion. Capt. Meirill arrived with his " Pro peller" from below on Thursday night, with eight tons merchandise.' Mr. M. thinks he can make the round trip be tween this point and Salem in one week at farthest, carrying 18 tons down and from 12 to 15 back. x3ully for the horse boat. . Good Price. We hear of a transac tion in flour, whereby parties in this city obtained 5 50 per. barrel, in San Fran cisco, for 1,000 barrels of Oregon flour. As the only sales we have noticed of this article for several days in San Francisco were made at 4 per barrel, and that, too, for fine county brands, the above price is a big figurg. Wadswortu & Kciin. Everybody knows "Wad." Well, "Wad" has taken into "cohootneiship" C. C. Kuha;a kyas clonk paintist and a good egg generally, and the two form a team awful hard to beat. They propose to "slap up" work in their line in a leetle the best style, at a leetle the lowest rates yet done by paintists in this city. Call and sec them. Read their card. That popular insti tution of Portland, lately known as the "Western Hotel," since going into the hands of the new "bosses," has been re ehristened, and will hereafter be known as the "Occidental." Messrs. Smith & Cook, two popular hotelists, have refitted and newly furnished the entire , hotel, have added several new rooms, enlarged the dining room, etc, etc;, and the Occidental now stands A 1 among the hotels of Portland. Read the new card. State Paper. A new advocate .of Republican principles, called the Bepub lican, printed at Edwardsville, the county seat of Madison county, Illinois, has reached us. It is a large,' neatly printed : and : ably edited : journal, and being right politically, we hope finan cially it will be a "big thing" a grand success.' It deserves a generous sup- port. ; i S. V. Crossman, formerly of Alton (HI-), is the editor and proprietor. Fair Yield. One of our best farmers, Mr. Hugh. Nickerson, informs us that he has harvested twenty-fire hundred bushels of wheat from one hundred: acres. Twenty-five bushels per acre of onehund red acres is a pretty fair yield, taking the unfavorablcness ot . the season into consideration. . ' Two moi&numbcrs, ends this volsme. RECOMMENDATIONS : . It possesses a decided superiority over all other plows How ia uso. Tho wheels are four feet in diameter, and run on the unplowcd land. Its entire construction is in no way complicated. The plow is managed in every manner with ease, and requires only two - levers to be used in makine any alteration. The supc riority of tho "Gay" Plow will be clearly shown by the following certificate : We, the undersigned, citizens of Linn county, Oregon, having purchased and used upon our farms the "Gay" Plow, hereby certify that tho same has given us entire satisfaction. Its facility for adjusting to suit the depth of furrow without moving from the seat, is simple and easy. Wo like the plow for its draught, because the same is brought to bear directly upon the plow-beam in stead of the carriage ; also, because it' is ' strong and durable, all except the wood-work being con structed of wrought iron no castings are used. Tho wheels running upon the solid land is an ad vantage over other gang-plows, in strikinz off land and in plowing, not having to make the nec essary changes in the machinery, and the scat is always level, not throwing tho driver forward, or sideways as in other plows. Better work and more of it can be accomplished by tho use of this .Plow than by hand. We take pleasure in recommending the "Gat" Plow to our brother farmers, as one having no superior in Oregon. J.
