Albany Collegiate Institute.
This 'institution will open, under the
charge of Rev. Edward R. Geary and
Rev. Samuel G. Irvine, on Monday, Oc
tober 18th, 1869. Under the guidance
and teachings of these two able gentle
men and finished scholars, with a corps
of competent teachers, the ensuing col
legiate year should be the most prosper
ous and profitable the Institute has en
joyed since its establishment. The in
ducements offered by this college, in the
possession of teachers of such high mortJ
reputa'-ion and literary ability, together
with tho low rate of tuition, .the cheap
mess of living, board being but S4 per
weei should induce a Urge attendance

To Farmers. Our, agricultural
friends, and parties running threshers,
are specially requested to read the card
f Mr. J. II. Dauthit in this issue. Mr.
Douthit is engaged in collecting statis
tical information in regard to Aha pro

cultural Departmental Washington City,
and a report of the number of bushels of
wheat and oats threshed, by parties run
ning r machines, will greatly aid him in
getting an' accurate report of the num

past season. Any reports .left at this
office will be gladly published.
Wallamet .University. We have
received the catalogue of this institution
for the year ending J uly, 1869. "From
it we learn that the total attendance
during the past year, was 227. The
collegiate term commences on the 13th
of September ; medical department com
mences on the 4th of November, and
continues four months. This is one of
tne most complete ana tnorough estab
lishments on the Pacific coast, and as
euch is rapidly gaining in popular favor.
; Medicated Soap. Last Saturday
. Mr. J. W. Watson left with us a sample
of soap j which he is .engaged in intro
ducing, I recommending it not only for
the usual purposes for which soaps are
used, but as being specially efficacious in
removing "grease spots" and stains from
clothing, reniovin pimples from4 the
skin, and as having no superior in clean
ing eilks, laces, ribbons, etc. So ' far as
' we hare tried it, it proves to be all it is
recommended. Sold by all druggists and
grocers. "-. -'''S.
Going East. To the5 regret of their
many friends, 3. Bar ro way Esq., and
family intend starting East in a few days
Mt. Barrows has been actively engaged in
'business in our city for many years
has saw Albany grow from almost a mere
"trading post to a flourishing city. Tat
ing an active and prominent part in her
; growth and " prosperity, and conducting
business in an honorable and straight'
forward manner, he has made many
warm personal friends, who will be sorry
to hear of his intended departure from
among us. We , are inclined to the
opinion, however, that his absence - will
be of short duration, and that he will find
no place that seems so much like "home"
as Albany. Mrs". Walter Monteith and
Mrs.. Sam'l Althouse will start East at
the same time, on a visit. . They have
- our best wishes for a pleasant and safe
journey. . t

II. F. Lawrence will open a Velocipede
School in Parrish Hall in thb city, on
Thursday, September 16th.
We were visited by a slight shower of
rain on Tuesday night.
We have received ah abtidged Speci

Foundry, a splendid specimen of printing,
and a very handy book to have in the
office.
."Items by the Way," and "Our
Mountain Trip," begin to look as though
our friends were taking some interest in
tho Register. Thanks. Write often.
R. Cheadle, Esq., offers 7p cents per
bushel for good merchantable, wheat.
Good forty-hundred two-horse wogORS
can be obtained of R. Cheadle for 165.
Rev. Mr. Bates (Evangelical), will
preach at the M. E. church, at the usual
morning hour, to-morrow.
Weather during the week cool, requir
ing fiies to keep warm, a good portion of
the day.
Sere throat, colds, final complaints. &c,
are some of the ills afflicting our people
now-a-days.
Melons, plums, green corn, apples, a
few grapes, squashes, apples, tomatoes,
may be had in our market in profusion.
Capt. Meirill arrived with his " Pro
peller" from below on Thursday night,
with eight tons merchandise.' Mr. M.
thinks he can make the round trip be
tween this point and Salem in one week
at farthest, carrying 18 tons down and
from 12 to 15 back. x3ully for the horse
boat.
.
Good Price. We hear of a transac
tion in flour, whereby parties in this city
obtained 5 50 per. barrel, in San Fran
cisco, for 1,000 barrels of Oregon flour.
As the only sales we have noticed of this
article for several days in San Francisco
were made at 4 per barrel, and that, too,
for fine county brands, the above price is
a big figurg.
Wadswortu & Kciin. Everybody
knows "Wad." Well, "Wad" has taken
into "cohootneiship" C. C. Kuha;a kyas
clonk paintist and a good egg generally, and
the two form a team awful hard to beat.
They propose to "slap up" work in their
line in a leetle the best style, at a leetle
the lowest rates yet done by paintists in
this city. Call and sec them. Read
their card.

Cold Metal Watches !
SOW BEING INTRODUCED BY
C. E. COLLINS & C9.,
629 Washington street, San Franviaco,
Surias3 anything yet made in the way of an im
itation ttold Watch. They wear well and keep
good time.
the Ladies' Watches cost $10 and 315 each;
the Gentleinens cost $15 and $20 .each.
Chains, from $3 to $ti each.
Coubt House Painting. We un
derstand that the contract for painting
the Conrt House was awarded "to Mr.
Wm. O'Reily, of Corvallis, ou Thursday
last. The sum to be paid bv Lino
county for said painting, is eleven hund
red and forty dollars. It seems that Mr.
O'Reily's bid was the smallest handed in.
Back Again. Ex-Recorder Doolittle
arrived in our city from Walla Walla
(W. T.), on Saturday last. We are sorry
to be informed that his health has not
been materially benefitted by the change.
He will remain in our city for a short
time. - " :
Name Changed. That popular insti
tution of Portland, lately known as the
"Western Hotel," since going into the
hands of the new "bosses," has been re
ehristened, and will hereafter be known
as the "Occidental." Messrs. Smith &
Cook, two popular hotelists, have refitted
and newly furnished the entire , hotel,
have added several new rooms, enlarged
the dining room, etc, etc;, and the
Occidental now stands A 1 among the
hotels of Portland. Read the new card.
State Paper. A new advocate .of
Republican principles, called the Bepub
lican, printed at Edwardsville, the
county seat of Madison county, Illinois,
has reached us. It is a large,' neatly
printed : and : ably edited : journal, and
being right politically, we hope finan
cially it will be a "big thing" a grand
success.' It deserves a generous sup-
port. ; i S. V. Crossman, formerly of
Alton (HI-), is the editor and proprietor.
Fair Yield. One of our best farmers,
Mr. Hugh. Nickerson, informs us that he
has harvested twenty-fire hundred bushels
of wheat from one hundred: acres.
Twenty-five bushels per acre of onehund
red acres is a pretty fair yield, taking
the unfavorablcness ot . the season into
consideration. . '
Two moi&numbcrs, ends this volsme.

The new GoW Metal Watcbes now being intro

seem to be just tho thing for those desiring a
cheap and at the same time good-looking time
keeper. One of the young lady compositors in
oar office has one of the cheapest kind advertised
S3 which runs well, keeps good time, looks
well, and seems to fulfill all the requirements ot a
high-priced watch. The chain sent with this
watch is of exquisite desitrn and hizh finish. See

Gold Metal Watches from C. E. Collins & Co., of
San Francisco. It is neatly finished, hunting
case, keeps good time and is, without doubt, the
best watch for the price that can be purchased in
San Francisco. Ja J'orte Uhuh.
What Next? Cheaper than silver looking
and wearing like gold neither plated or galvan
ized are the new Gold Metal Watches we saw
last week at oar friend Collins'; If we had not a
gold watch which we bave to pay each year $3
to "Uncle Sam" for the privilege ef wearing we
certainly would have a Gold Metal Watch.

L Tho Company give credit when desired, of from

An illustration of the advantages of the credit
system as practiced by this Company, is the ease
of H. C. Cee, of Yonkers, who insured hU life in
this Company for $5,000, in February, 1857, pay
ing the whole premium in cash, $118 ; at the end
of the first year it was impossible for him to raise
the amount of the premium then due, in cash, and
he came to the office prepared to surrender the
policy.' Being told that ho could give his note
for tho premium, he did so. HU death occurred
in less than seven months. His family are now
in the eojoynrent of the amount insured. Had
he insured in an "all cash." Company, they would
have been left unprovided for. " .
This is, in itself, a complete refutation of the
absurd statement of '"all eaeh" Companies, that

Farmers Can Ride and Plow,
BV SECUHINO ONE Or THE
"GAY" PLOWS,
Manufactured and sold for the very low price of
MTIIIE simplicity and practicability of this new
1 Plow commends it favorably to tho special
notice of every farmer." It possesses a decided
superiority over all other plows How ia uso. Tho
wheels are four feet in diameter, and run on the
unplowcd land. Its entire construction is in no
way complicated. The plow is managed in every
manner with ease, and requires only two - levers
to be used in makine any alteration. The supc
riority of tho "Gay" Plow will be clearly shown
by the following certificate :
We, the undersigned, citizens of Linn county,
Oregon, having purchased and used upon our
farms the "Gay" Plow, hereby certify that tho
same has given us entire satisfaction. Its facility
for adjusting to suit the depth of furrow without
moving from the seat, is simple and easy. Wo
like the plow for its draught, because the same is
brought to bear directly upon the plow-beam in
stead of the carriage ; also, because it' is ' strong
and durable, all except the wood-work being con
structed of wrought iron no castings are used.
Tho wheels running upon the solid land is an ad
vantage over other gang-plows, in strikinz off
land and in plowing, not having to make the nec
essary changes in the machinery, and the scat is
always level, not throwing tho driver forward, or
sideways as in other plows. Better work and
more of it can be accomplished by tho use of this
.Plow than by hand.
We take pleasure in recommending the "Gat"
Plow to our brother farmers, as one having no
superior in Oregon.
