A lthough g ro w ers may find the ap p earan ce of th e ir w aln u ts norm al before drying, th e p ecu liar co n d i tions this y e a r a re causing excessive sh rin k ag e and sh riv ellin g As a r e su lt g ro w ers a rc w ondering if they should proceed w ith the h a r vesting of the crop as the expense of picking and d ry in g is very heavy Based on his observations so far. T ru n k has issued the following suggestions to w alnut growers: i l l Go into the w alnut orchard and pick from a large num ber of trees scattered throughout the o r chard at least one h u n d red pounds of w alnuts Be sure these are th o r oughly rep resen tativ e of the p ro duction throughout the plantings. • 2* Take these w alnuts to a d rier w here careful records of the green w eight should be made. The nuts should then be w ashed and th o r oughly dried. (3> Remove the n uts from the drier, weigh them and cheek the percentage of m oisture loss or shrinkage.
