Chamberlain was the leader of the greatest committee in Congress. Portland lays against the greatest wheat field West of the Kockics; lays adjoining the greatest individual forest iu the I'uited States; and is peculiarly situated so as to make a salt-aud tresh water port combined, and its future should in no way be discounted by friction between ri val real estate holders. If Port land is to keep up its gain as a port of substance its people should get together and do thing "uot dream them all day long." Mark Sullivan, political w riter, says that the trend of political strength has been going to Cos iu the Last ever since Mr. Harding's DcsMoiucs speech. Just as long as Washington, California and Idaho encourage capital by abstaining from ad verse legislation on interest rates just that long will Oregon be un wise to vote in the five per cent, interest-measure now on the bal lot. Millions of dollars now com ing to Oregon fo.r investment in backing up the big industrial pro jects of the state a state that has onc-scvenlh of the Nation's standing timber will go to the adjoining states for investment. Just why Oregon should be asked to throw obstacles in the way of progress, and just why it is ex acted that the state will vote to keep manufacturing money away from its coiiliiu s, is hard of anal ysis. When you go into the booth next Tuesday answer this by vot ing "315 X No." A vote for Geo. . Chauibcrlaiu is a vote of confidence in the man who looked out for the service boys who is there to deny this? Perhaps Swift & Co., the big packing barons. The big corporations are all supporting Mr. Harding. That; should be suiheient within itself j to support Mr. Cox, for the big corporations want all the labor and all the product possible for their almighty dollar. FOUR FISHERMEN Four Hillsboro fishermen return ed the first of the week from an expedition to the Nestueca. They were Senator Hare, T. C. Hey nolds, Grover Combs and Jack Baynard. The boys trolled for salmon and had a splendid time,' although they claim the salmon' were not runuing the best. Each' one' made nice catches, and thej way the quartet handled a motor! boat they hired would have made! a good subject for the movies. Combs and Reynolds were master and pilot of a small boat, and when they started down the Nes tueca the bow was almost sub merged. When Hare and Rey nolds asked them why didn't they get in the center of the boat, or a little back, to give the bow a J chance, cacti contended that their catch would weigh down the stern enough to even the keel. Hit wife's maiden name was (Catherine Anderson, and they were married June 2ii, lft3, the year of their departure to Idaho. JOSEPH LANE MEEK Joseph Lane Meek, of Graigmont, near Volmer, Idaho, died Octo ber Si, after a short illness. He was born in Washington County, October C, 1 853, and lived here until grown to manhood. From here he went to Nei Pcrces in 18K3, where he has since lived. He was the son of Col. Joseph L. Meek, the first United States Mar shal for Oregon, and one of the intrepid frontiersmen of the Ore gon country. Col. Meek was tin real man of action at Chnmocg when Oregon voted for American provisional government, beating the English by a hair. It was Meek who forced the vote. Deceased is survived by his widow and seven children; a brother, S. A. I). Mr. Rider expects soon to start south to Los Angeles, where he will join Mrs. Rider, who is down! there for her health. John F Ilailcy, of Forest Grove, was down to Hillsboro yesterday afternoon, looking over the county seat. Mr. Iiailcy was for years in the mercantile bus! ness nt the Grove and his place was a favorite rendevous for traders. The Hillsboro Club committee has made arrangements to meet the request of the proposed laun dry proprietors, and it is expect ed that the machinery will soon lie shipped and installed. E. O. Hagey, of Sherwood, was in town yesterday. He says that the metropolis of that part of the county is still forging ahead even if the weather has played havoc with the onion crop.
