WINS GOLD MEDAL AT CHAU TAUQUA ASSOCIATION. Miss Lena Parker, of Gaston, and daughter of Mr. and Mra. K. H. Parker, is a native of Washington county. She finished her studies at Paeific University, and after ward, taught for two yearB in the Washington county schools. She then commenced the study of elo cution, and in that art has been awarded four medals the last be ing the Grand Demorest gold med al, awarded by the Chautauqua at its recent session at Gladstone Park: Miss Parker is one of the finest elocutionists in the North west, and her many friends are proud of her accomplishments, C. Was tlaadliog Guo Wbea Sister Came la Front, Receiving tbe Load. The little two and one-half year old daughter of Mr. and Mr. N. II. Sheidel, who reside northwest of town, near the Wren donation, waa shot by her brother, aged seven, Tuesday afternoon, the bul let from a 22-calibre rifle passing into the child's right lung. The boy was handling the rifle; when the litlie girl ran in front of him. the gun was discharged, and the child fell before the lad realized what had happened. Drs. F. A. and F. J. Bailey were called, and they notified the parents that there were twenty chances for death where there waa one .of recovery. The little one was badly shocked b the incident, and kept saying, "shot, shot." The bullet could not be reached, and had doubtless lodged in the lung, as frequent hemorrhages led to that conclusion At last reports the child was etui alive and in a critical condition. Mrs. Ewe readily adopted the calf, and it is more than a circus to see that calf get down on its knees and dine on what the lambs left over and this is no romance, either.
