Hauna WHY SOT THE SA.Mfc? . Why not elect our United State' ! equators by a direct vote 'of the people, as we do the representalivee j of the lower house of congress? The present method of electing.; eenators ia altosrether too cumber-! some, and is defective in more ways than one. In the first place, the method is not representative; in the second place, there is too much op portunity for unscrupulous politics. In this way many a senator is elected by methods that are shady, and this, following from one year to another, is 'bound to leave its najghty impress upon the people at large. A bill has passed the house of representatives to have all senators elected by the popular vote. It will hardly pass the sen ate. It will more than likely be killed in the committee room. The press of the country is rapidly com ing to the support of the popular election method. Oregon should declare for it and shof'd f'.n.' law that legislators should . u 1 the senate, tho man rec I v 1 ; J highest number of vofa r.t ? eral election as the c1k:co rf t -people for the office. Ir is very nearly time for the corporation press to commence t!. onslaught on direct legislation, r -; the amendment to the constitatio-j to that end will be voted uprm cf' tite coming election. If th:.,i j ' ary one thing that the jr,;;," i b.isses do not want, that ti Y ii (he powtr of Ijt r-jkl.-.j ' - j peal placed ia tl.j Hr,.1 -f 'he j)C'iple of the sUte. Of course, tiiii - ,.br t IYUUIU IVU kUSCl'O Ul b UIJU r-tl 1 1 V I T" of dollars, and no one should be permitted to do. this.'- This term, "rob" is used advisedly, as it has 1 een customary for years to permit pot house politicians to have their way, and many a scandal has been hushed, where the state has been li'ched. If the people of Oregon want good administrations they should keep the power of self gov ernment in their hands. To have and to hold this it will be necessary to vole for the direct legislation amendment. It is a biiuple and effective measure, and only places the power where it really bfdonga in the hands of the people. 1IANNA FOlt intKSIDKM The dispatches in yesterday's pa pers go to show that there is some talk of running Mr. Hanna for the presidency. Mr. Hanna ia the ideal candidate of his party. Those politicians who support Mr. Han- na's ideas along national lines should not refuse him their sup port and declare him too brutally commercial, and all that. He is the embodiment pro pria of govern f nient by commercialism and favor IX llism to commercialists. That he it would be (rank and candid, once J elevated to the executive chair, goes without saying. He would ask no more thau his party whips t are now asking, and with him as president, the American people would notatall be guessing as to WJ'iat was wanted. Much legisla tion now being effected is done with pretense; were Mr. Hanna at the head of government we would have a straight out business proposition, asking for class legislation, and for the extension of trusts and govern ment aid to those who are already worth millions. Indeed, he would be an ideal candidate and we would have 00 particular differ -1 -. in our legislation for it i ; that way with amazing rapid Slsator FitYE, of Maine, is l! c , ', ' '" ' '"' .
