The Native Soua' are pushing the
Carnival to the front, and tlm city
will 1 iu high jinks from October
2 to October 5, inclusive, the dales
of the fair, The live stock exhibit
will be the best line-up of blooded
tock of all kinds ever brought to
gether in Washington county,
or from any one county in the
state. Fanners are taking interet
ju the exhibit of farm productions
of all kinds, and if our people do
not see a carnival that will be both
a street fair and a county fair some
thing will go amiss.
It will be arranged to have a
llremeu's tournament, the couU-sl
lo be between llillahoro, Forest
(irove and McMirmville. In this
(here will be also a tug-of-war be
tween the opposing teams, the pulls
lo be made on hose. A series of
baseball games will be played and
a league game will be one of the
features.
The polls art. now open for bal
loting on the queen of the carnival.
Ilach vote will cost the voter 5
cents, the money to go into the car
nival fund. Any lady in Washing
ton county is eligible.
An item in last week's issue
mentioned the fart of a case in the
justice court againat Mrs. Atkinson,
the wife of the marshal of Hifls
burn, and the words, "It seems that
after tbe trial the sunshade was
missing, and Mrs. Atkinson be

Dr. and Mrs. Withycombe went

eye specialist in the case of their
little sou, Karl, who was injured in
a powder explosion nearly four
years ago. The eye ball continues
badly powder burned and there is
an yet little or no sight. Swelling
that disappeared sometime after
the accident is reappearing, and
physicians have advised that a
specialiwt 'be consulted. The right
eye has entirely recovered from the

Sheriff Sewell's deputies are very
busy these days making up the de
linquent roll for Washington
county. Over $87,000 has been
collected on the roll just closed,
and Ibis leaves a balance of about
8,000 to go as delinquent. This
is perhaps as close a collection as
has been made for a number of
years.
A, 8. Pence, who was agent for
the Southern Pacific here some
few years ago, but who has' been at
McMinnville for a year or two, was
in town last evening. He has been
in the Portland hospital for several
weeks, undergoing treatment for
muscular rheumatism.
The eldest son of Perry Gardner,
who resides on the John A. Foote
ranch, east of the city, lost the tip
off one of his fingers of hia left
hand this morning, while playing
around a binder which Mr. Foote
was repairing,

who resides on the'Vio Brown
claim, beyond Buxton, lost his
house and barn and much other of
value, by fire, caused by defective
flue, yesterday.
Dr. McLean, state veterinary
surgeon, was in town last evenirg,

W ilkes, and which was recently

Tillamook ciunty is getting into
shape for a railroad, and it is only
a question of time until it will be
built. That county is one of the
richest in the state for dairy pro
duct, and the beach over there is a
fine resort for tourists. A new
company has been formed and has
filed articles of incorporation at
Tillamook. Its purpose m to main
tain the Wilson river toll road be
tween that point and Forest Grove,
and the originators talk of buildiog
a railroad between the two pointe.
Tbe incorporators of the new or
ganization are Oak and G. O. No
lan and G. W. Kiger.
Mrs. Charles A. Quick.
Nellie Myrtle Lewis, wife of Charles
A. Quick, was born in Iowa, Octo
ber 5, 1878. She came to Oregon
with her parents in 186, and lived
in the Nebalem valley -until 1893,
when they moved to Cornelius.
She was married to Charles A.
Quick, May 3, 1897. They soon
moved to Pendleton, where Mrs.
Quick died July 26, 1901, of ion
sumption, her aee being 22 years,
9 months and 21 days.

circle of friends to mourn her on-
timely departure.

will come to llillahoro, Sunday,
Aug. 4, and at 2 o'clock in the after
noon meet the Hillsboro-Cornelius
ttam on the local diamond. The
Oregon City team has a reputation
that has not lieen dimmed by de
feat, and the match promises to be
very interesting. Ilaseball enthu
siasts say that the visitors will
prove the best team that our nine
has met, and lovers of the game
will miss an exciting time' if they

Washington county remembers
well the McHargue incident. The
Slate Board of Education found
McHargue guilty of unprofessional
conduct as a teacher, and Superin
tendent call refused to consider
his application and examination as
a teacher, and McHargue- went to
Multnomah county, where he met
with a like refusal. McHargue
thereupon went to Clackamas,
where he received his certificate.
Coming back to Hillsboro be de
manded that Supt. Hall endorse
his paper so he might teach in this
county. Mr. Ball declined and
mandamus proceedings were threat
ened. They then agreed to allow
the Attorney-General to decide.
That official sustains Mr. Ball, and
so, then, it is settled that Mr. Mc
Hargue can not teach in Washing
ton county. ' .

Mr. Wm. Moore went to Wasco
county Saturday evening to attend
the bedside of her son Roy. who re
cenuy oroxe one of his legs.
Fred Essig. aged about 17 years,
and who lives just west of town,
broke an arm, near the wrist,
Monday. The young man has been
ailing a long time from a disease of
the hip joint, and had juat become
strong enough to take to bis
crutches when the accident took
