NBIQHBOKa, DO NOT gUAKRKL It take all kinds of people to make tip a world. There are many creeds, religiously, and many codes of morality from which to choose. Anent the opposition to Sunday baseball playing in this, or any other city, The Argus has but this '. to aay: t It believes in a man going to church on Sunday if he so de sire; and believes in a person going to an innocent amusement on the same day, if he or she so desire. Provided, of course, that in all , ties, no person or set oi persons hall infringe upon the rights of ; thers, lawfully, or unlawfully. As ; i the Sunday newspaper and Sun ny trains, that is a matter of inion. Tiig Argus sees no wrong iu a Sunday train service, and cer tainly sees no wrong in a Sunday newspaper. Either can be made htttraments of good, and generally are made such instruments to many. The contention over the observance of the Sabbath day is as old as civihxation itself, and the old blue laws of Connecticut gave ua touch of high life on this same wore. Some will observe Sabbath by Kng to hear the Sunday ser won, . sometimes of the gospel preached and sometimes of other thinga, while others go to innocent amuasmenU and amusements that are not so innocent. That a minis ter of the gospel is expected to preach to his flock the strictest ob servance of the day of all days is a matter that no one disputes; and that many a deacon will occasion ally go fishing on that day, or pic nicking, in contravention to church discipline, is history from the dark ages down. These things have been so long threshed over that people make a mistake when they make too violent quarrel, one with the other, on the question that is no nea' settlement now than it was at the beginning of the Chris tian aia. Thkhk is nothing wonderful in the fact that people, young and old, and regardless of sex, grow en thusiastic over a good, clean game of baseba IL It is a game of Na tional importance, and loved by admirers of physical contests every where, where contests are not bru tal. The athletic field inaugurated in lullsboro brings a new era to athletics in Washington county The support given the new venture must be gratifying to the editor of the Independent, who was chair man of the first meetinx called to consider the proposition of putting in a field of this kind. ollifr good this countrr uit ', ami expev-t to lull down th cle a (e notches more on our return titan on onr leaving." U. W. IUri'Kk. Keal Estate Transler All dispatches sent to Portland papers from this county in which it is alleged that the wheat crop will be short in yield do not hit the true situation in any respect. It is true that there is here and there a short yield as compared to the last several crops, but, generally, farmers, who are observant, and those who watch crop yields from year to year, tell that we shall have the best yield we have had for some four years. Tub Argus, as well as the regular Oregonian correspondent from this place, has repeatedly corrected these reports of scanty yield of wheat From present indications there is no doubt of the superiority of this year's crop over any of the past four seasons. When a student has com pleted the course of study at Pacific University he is ready to enter the Ua any and everywhe. It has turned out more men of brains than any Western college. It gets no state support Its standards are modern, and its instructors the best in the field of college work. We all remem ber how quiet thi Geer-Plummer transaction was kept, and now wanes another little story that has been squelched. It is reported that some time ago, perhaps a month, our Attorney-General for Oregon, Blackburn, went into a room and turned on the gas with suicidal in tent. It is said that his son sus pected something was wrong and rescued the paternal ancestor. The alleged attempt is said to have lieen due to rumors of improper conduct between the Attorney-General and one of his employes. It will be remembered that the Attorney-General, in deciding a case wherein the reading of the bible in the public school was involved, went out of his way to render, a nice little epilogue upon morals. SOfltiBT CONTROVERSY. The long drawn controversy be tween Admiral Schley and the friends of Sampson, who are iden tical with Schley's critics, will be to an end this Fall. Schley has asked for an investigation of his actions and maneuvers while at Santiago, and a board of investiga tion has been selected. The request of the admiral for the inquiry has been forced by the critics who have sought in every, way to belittle the actions of the brave old admiral, the latest being the literary efforts of a government clerk in the Navy Yard. Macleay, a writer of fiction which he calls history, asperses the actions and character of Schley, and calls him a coward. That the Erctary of the Navy is prejudiced t'-l e admiral, and is heartily f ) llttzi h Eampaon's admirers, G. W. Harper, of the Robinson, III., Argus, writes hie borne paper of bis recent visit here, thus: 'Thursday we went to Hillsboro, tone twenty miles west from Port land, which is the county seat of the adjoining county, and is a town hardly as large as Robinson, and of about the tame age as Port land. It has some very fine coun try around it, and as it was the first level country to be seen to the extent of sight since passing the prairies of the Dakotas. we were forcibly reminded of home. On the route we saw the contrast of winter and spring wheat on the two sides of the railroad track, and in adjoining fields. The one was just ready for the reaper, while the other was green and would not be resdy for harvest before August The wheat, oats, rye and barley sre all of a fine quality, and larger grain than that - of Crawford county. The day we (pent ta Hillshoro we were most handsomely entertained bv Mr, and Mrs. Benton Bowman at their delightful home. There was no doubt "a mutual admiration society" in this meeting of former Robinson friend in 1 heir far away borne, and visitor in a Strang part of the country. Mr. Bow man's many friend back in Crawford will be pleased to know that in hi new home he i doing well, i pleasantly sit uated, and that he aud hi nice little family are held in high esteem. Hi sister, who came here a year or two later than he, a few week go went to Sitki, Alaska, where she had a call as a teacher. We have had some new demonstra tion of the fact that you caanot bide yourself in thi great aud vaat country from those whom you have known, and who have known you, or of whom you have known. In Hillsboro we knew lived Bruce Huston, who read law some twenty five year ago with G. N. Parker, but we found also Mr. Carlisle, who is in the harness business, and also learned tbst a brother of the late Judge Schol field lived there, as bad also the family, bis father dying only a few year ago. We were favorably impressed, not only with the country around Hillsboro, and town, but with the people. II we were seeking a new home we certainly should feel strongly inclined to make choice of that place. We did not see Bruce Hus ton, a he was away from home, but vis ited his suite of office rooms, three in September 23 to 28 ordinnrv cough. Price 75 eta.
