LUCIUS A. LOSG, EDITOR. County Official Paper. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY BY Hi Arjni Wishiiig Cwpttj. Siibir jtlon: One IVdlar per Annum, Sis Months, 60 cts; Three Months, 35 eta. Opposed to Gold Mono mctallism. Be lieves in the Bimetallic Standard. Dear Money means Debased Property, and Profitless American Product. Onr Consequent loss is our Creditors' Gain. Has no use fur Marcus A. Hanna DEBASED PROIUCT AM) BRAIN'S When a brainy Journal advocates debased product in a producing Country, then that brain is either diseased, perverted, or purchased r not purchased from a standpoint of dollars and cents, necessarily, but purchased, nevertheless, either by influence or eiivirantuent-the influ ence and environment of that class which, business like, want more for a dollar. It is human nature, of course, to want "more for a dollar," and it is "business to want more for a dollar, where dollars are one's capital, and for this reason, the great credit institutions of the country want debased product, be cause debased product means cheap property and cheap labor. As a rule, broken by infrequent except ions, the money rich stand together for debasement of that which money will buy. It is business for them; let one be charitable enough 4a pre sutne, then, that busineea, prompts ''the brain of onr great journals ad- . Yocating cheap farm, farmers and farm products. And then, to the other side of tbe question. While one admits tbe value of I he trades, professions, and labor, aside from that purely agricultural. vet it is truth that the farmers of ' our country are those who feed and clothe the rest of society. Tbe farm ers, by their trade, support the little towne," which in turn create and support the big cities; the farmer pays his' own tax, and out of the profit from the farmer the little towns pay their quota of taxation, and send in, besides, the profit out of which great cities are supported. So, it is an easy chain to find who makes the business world to move. When price levels are good, as be tween product and money, farmers buy more and all society is aided. In which, then are e more inter esteddebased product or that level wjich gives decent profit to our farms? This should, be no hard problem for solution. No farmer should be guided by a mere party name. The banks are now ruling not our country's banks, particularly, but the jireat banking interests of the world. Let us change this order of things, and lei producers, who are in the majority as between the two interests, take hold the reins of government and give equity to all. A GUBERNATORIAL SCANDAL After Governor (leer wrote his de nial of the Plummer transaction and had it published in mi obscure paper ' in Eastern Oregon, Mr- Plummer returns to the assault and gives the lie direct to the Governor. Aside from this, Pluin'mer's chief deputy "also makes affidavit that the deal was made. There u now but one thing for the loud mouthed Mr. Geet to do, and thai is to pros ecute Mr. Plummer on a criminal charge and clear his skirts of the vile story going the rounds. Mr, flummer says tie stands ready to prove his assertions any and every where. -Iteration and reiteration. , crimination and recrimination, go for nothing. Nothing but the court can clear up this state scan dal, and Geejf owes it to the good name pftie state to take the initia tive and arrest the man whom he says has scandalized him. Will he do it? That is not the question. The question really is: Why has he not 10 done long ago? THAT ISTHMIAN CANAL. It baa been settled that this session of Congress will do nothing to ward!, the great American canal All legislation1 to this end has been blocked, and by what? More thto lllwlj thl" ha" be" done b.v trannoonttnentai raiiRoad interests intorwte which should be injured Waterway connecting the 'At-1 Untie and Pacific and if not by these interests, by what? .'Just as the Southern Pacific railroad gets free from paying its just thare of taxes. in Oregon, just so are our congresses worked by that railroad corporation. They are heavy con tributors to the honest money campaign fund, and "honest money men" must protect it. Let Oregon sound the first gun for "honest pro duct" and no more railroad domin ation. , GLADSTONE, THE OI'EAT. The present iiritish-Trar.svaal con flict brings forcibly to. mind the late Gladstone, who as England's premier, stands out as an isolated British statesman who stood for justice, regardless of political cost. Here, indeed, was England's grand est old man. Those things which are charged against him as relative to the Transvaal are speaking to day, when Gladstone is dtad, in in deep tones for equity i and just ice. Mr. Gladstone Treattiel that the Dutch had "gone into and open ed up the Transvaal; he realized that they were people who were brave in defense, courageous in their undertakings and pioneers in agricultural develop went. lie gave them justice and lived to see the day that Britain's great com mon people returned him to power, after he had laid it down, at de mand of the Jingoes. When Glad stone died, there w as another death "n Britian the death of a liberal principle accepting thj the ory that thtre are rights which even a great and powerful natwn should respect; rights which are of more importance as a matter of fairness than dominion over "palm and pine,' THE GOLD TRESS LOGIC. Your gold preps logic is good! Of course it is! If you raise product, you are a "fool" and a "traitor" if you do not stand in with a move to heat down prices of that which you sell. You are a "fool" unless you vote to have an "honest" dollar which is constantly going to buy more of what you raise. .. Lastly, you are a fool if you utter one pro test against a syndicate system which is never satisfied unless it has its one own way and yet is satisfied with the Hanna admin istration. What a grand concep tion of the intelligence of the pro ducer the gold "yeller" must have! A Pretty Mesa. Ex-Secretary of State H. R. Kincaid, the veteran editor of the Eugene Journal, has the following editorial comment in his paper on tbe Geer. Plummer scandal: The affidavit of Belden H. Grant will be found in this taper, concerning the alleged sale of the superintendency of tne penitentiary uy 1. 1. (jeer to H. H. Plummer forfi.ooo. For the people who furnished the $2,000 to keep Geer from accepting the Oregon City land office, and many others who are well acquaint ed with him, no affidavits are needed They have no doubt that h: accepted the f 1,000, as alleged by Plummer, and did not make the appointment aa he had agreed to, for the reason that he was in formed and believed that the receipt for the money had been burnt up in the Polk county court house when it wa destroy ed by fire. When another man bad beeu appointed, the bolder of the receipt be came angry and showed it to many people including some politicians. The indignant holder then refused to give it up, and if tbe monev has been paid back to him it was done in tbe hope of quiet ing me matter as mucn as possible and to gain time to fix it up. Roseburg Re view. ' - A VERSATILE CORPORATION. The Standard Oil Company is never 'but of politics. It has no politics, and al ways "stands in" with the powers that be. Eastern papers just now are making a scandal of the relations, of Secretary Gage, 6f President' Mckinley's cabinet, the NatiohaV City' batik of New York city, in which the "Standard Oil crowd" have full power. Somet'me ago the government sold its bid Custom house site in New York to this bauk for $3,265,000, all of which was paid except $40,000. Secretary Gage deposited the money which he received, in tbe form of a certified check in this, bank, where it has lain ever since, and' entered into an agreement to pay the bank for tempor ary use of the old custom house nn the part of the government, a rental of some $11,000 a month. In other words, the bank had. full use of the government's money, and, besides, received' rent from the government for the property which the money represented. -Eugene Guard. Mr. Hanna will make no speeches on the financial measure now in the senate. He is too shrewd to make his support a public matter." He has carried his point and that is-all he wants. Mr. Simon probably realizes by this time that it is greater to be president of a state senate over which he has control than to be a member of a national sen ate, where he is outranked in all res pects. ; . . ' England can plead for a revision of that old -nrg-,tme piece: "The Irish and the Dutch, Oh! they don't amonnt to much." It beifins to kink 11, .,, amount too mucii. If Grover Cleveland reads extensively in our lickspittle journals, these days, he will suddenly discover that be was very "traitorous" in calling England down over that little Venetuelan incident.
