The cutting of wheat for hay has commenced in a few sections. Clov er, timothy and cheat continue lo tie cut. The hay crop is turning out as well as it has ever done. Fall-sown wheat, oats and barley are turning yellow; in afew favored localities barley harvest has com menced. Early-sown spring grain has commenced to head The spring grain promises well; the yield will not be ns hiavy aa the fall-sown. The reports indicate that the grain crop is in a fairly satisfactary con dition, not aa good as in some years, but better than in others. 8t ran berries are alamt over. Cher ries are ripening; Uoyal Anns are about two weeks late in ripening. Apples, pears and prunes rve not changed in condition; dropping has ceaoed ami the fruit now on the trees will probably mature. The light fruit allows of an extra good growth of wood, so that the orch ards are really iient filed by the light crop. Peaches are ripening in the southern counties. In Jackson county there is a good crop; in oth er counties there will be little, if any, more than thnt required for thr. local markets. Taiuiesie has returned from his trip to Rogue River, weet of Cow Creek canyon, where he went to look into some placer pros pects. He states that his trip covered some of the roughest territory over which he ever travelled. Dr. F. A. Bailey, assisted by Dr. W. D. Wood, of this place, in the presence of several physicians, tre phined the skull of Waller Miller, the young man of Cornelius who fell thirty feet, striking on tbe head. The fracture extended four inches serosa the cranium. ' The operation was successful, the , ratierit beinir greatly relieved, and hopes are en tertained lor his ultimate recovery. Mr. p. H. Gray, of Iowa Hill, was in the city Saturday and re ports he has wheat six feet, rye eight feet, while wheal higher than fcix feet has been cut for fexr of its falling. Mr. Gray and family expect lo leave for Ocean Park, Tillamook, today. They will be ac companied by ii'm Errnia Hulls-man. Messrs. Zina Wood Jr., of this city, and his relative, FredTrullin- ger, postmaster at North Yamhill, left this week for an extended trip in the Rocky Mountains and iei lowstone Park district They go bv train to Billings and from that point they will go into the park on their wheels. The fire bell was immediately given five taps with intervals between eaoh and powder was burnt with much gusto. The vessels made the harbor of Frisco about 5:30 o'clock in the afternoon and went into uuarantine. It was learned that the boys wer unanimous in their demand that they be muster ed out at nan Francisco and so will it be. This, of course, upsets all idea of reception at Portland as the boys will be mustered out below and come at their own sweet will. After a general iscussion it was voted unanimous ly that the citizens of Hiilsboro and surrounding country should turn out and meet the boys at the train pon their return, and that the Uillshoro band be invited to be present. Charged With Horse Stealing. George Coughtrr, of Lafayette, was arrested Saturday last on a John Doe warrant and lodged in the city bastile. Coughtry wus charged with the larceny of four mares and one geHiug which the Mieriff had ax taclied. The animals are owned by Robert Coughtrv, a brothor 0! thi defendant The attachment was made Thursday and on the Satur day following Coughtry attempted to run the animals out of the coun ty. The defendant was tried before Judge Smith Monday and proved that he had no knowledge of the sheriffs attachment, that arrange ments had been made to transfer the stock subsequent to attachment, and that he took possession of them in good faith. Tozier, one of oar Hiilsboro friends, were brought from Wallace, Idaho, Sat urday evening, and buried in the Masonic cemetery west of the city. Mr. Tozier died at Wallace, July 6, from the results of blood-poisoning, and. as he bad been quite healthy, his demise was a sad surprise. Chan. T. Tozier was born in Ind iana in 1832 and was married to Caroline Miner in 1855, who died in 1856. To this union one son was born, Edgar A., now living at Blairslown, Iowa. On August 1, 1653, he married Miss Ziralda P. May field, of Cass County, Nebraska. To this union two sons and three daughters were born. One of the daughters, Ros el la. lies buried in the Masonic cemetery west of this city. Judge Tozier waa sheriff of this county four years, having been elected in 1872, waa two terms representative from this county and served as County Judge for four years. He was always con genial, made many friends and was honored and respected by all. He always liked Hiilsboro and had hoped some day to again make it his home. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodge of this place. He helped to build the M. E. church here and was a member until the time of his death. His death came sud denly, himself not realizing or thinking he was in any danger. The first intimation his family re ceived was a telegram stating that Judge Tozier was dying. Albert and Nellie, his son and daughter, at once started for Wallace, Idaho, but did not reach there until death had claimed him. Mrs. Tozier has Uen confined to her room for near ly four months. The children are Edar A. Tozier of Blairstown, loa. Alliert, Nellie Tozier and Mra. 1'Myth Weatherred of Port land and Lemy M. Tozier, of Daw son City. Reynard, of Laurel, was in the city this morning, on business. George Bauer, a rather preposses sing looking German, aged about 50, and who is a substantial busi ness man of San Francisco, Cat., was taken to the asylum this morning. 8auer came up from San Francisco the first of the week to visit bis brother, Jacob Sauer, who lives near Farmington. His brother was in Portland when he arrived at Farm ington, and the visitor caused much apprehension by his strange actions. The brother's arrival home seemed to quiet him for awhile, but later on he became unmanageable and was brought before Judge Rood. He was examined by Judge Rood and held over one day for developments. Yesterday he was exceedingly irra tional and last night it was decided to send him him lo the asylum Sauer has a large bakery in San Francisco and is said to be worth alut thirty or forty thousand dol lars. About two years ago he was robbed in San Francisco and sus tained a severe injury on his head, which may be the capse of his men tal uneasiness. Sauer brought with him his two little children, who are now with their uncle. A month' treatment at Salem will very likely restore him. Manuel Pizer, of Cornelius, who was arrested for alleged larceny of 16.00 from the Mountaindale Lum ber Company through having re ceived an overpayment of 16.00, nJ Upon notification refusing tore- fund, claiming an offset on a bal ance alleged to to due from An drews fc Dorrance, had his first trial hursday last, when the jury dis agreed. On Monday another trial was bad before Justice smith ami a jury, when he was convicted, the jury being out but fifteen minutes. He was fined $25 and Pizer went to jail rather than pay tbe fine. Geo. K. Uaelev helped H. T. Bagley prosecute, and John M. Wall de fended. The first jurj , which disa greed, is said to have voted five to one for acquittal, at one time. The little three-year-old boy of Mr. and Mrs. McCoubray helped himself to carbolic acid Tuesday evening and badly scalded bis mouth and throat. Dr. Tamiesie was called and pumped out the contents of the stomach so that were any of the poison there, it would be cared for. Th little chap seems to be doing very nicely under the circumstances and nut- side of a loss of some mucuous membrane no great danger is apprehended. Hon. H. V. Gates seems to be In demand in the upper country. In La Grande at the G. A. K. reunion he addressed the old veterans, July 1; on Julv 3, he addressed tbe Woman's Relief Corps and on the 4th, he made an addres lo 5,000 people. Gault, president of the Oregon Press Association, returned Wednesday morning from his trip over the state with the Editorial excursion. Dr. S. T. Linklater, who is a pastmaster in the craft was also a companion to the Knight of the Quill. Each reports that the journalists think Oregon the greatest state in. the Union Rev. R. A. Atkins and family of this city, are out in the mount ains this week, enjoying an outing. They departed Tuesday morning at 3:30. Brother Atkins will .have caught up with Morpheus by the time he gets back, but the unrighte ous may expect to get their just deserts at the first sermon. George W.
