It not. reallr. rope, who first was aaid ."Whatever is, is rieht." That observation was but the echo of an dent minds, reasoning from came to effect. It is with a certain de gree of amusement, mingled with courteous toleration, that we hear, even at this late day, fierce phillip ics against the institution of slave ts as a part of the history of the United States. Yet, when one con descends to consider the question from its' earliest inception, there is much food for reflection as to its result upon civilization. Certain it i, the idea of involuntary servi tude is revolting to minds taught that freedom and veBled rights are and should be hereditary entail and the average man of today sees no further than this. He does not stop to consider the evolution of the Ethiopian as brought about by the bringing him forth from the jungles and placing him in contact with civilization. Even in 1861, the black slave of the south was furth er advanced from his counterpart in Liberia than the black freed man of today is advanced above himself of thirty five years ago. The very wrong of slavery was thus made the stepping stone for the arnelior ation of the black race. The civil war 'removed the last barrier to ad vancement and while ten out of each hundred have progressed, the re maining ninety, in various subdi visions, have remained stationary or retrograded. While it appears greater strides should have been made in thirty five years, satisfact ion should obtain that even this much hr b been accomplished. The evolution of civilization is a parallel. Out of wrongs long en dured what was monarchy has ma ny times grown to free government. Existing wrongs creato revolt and diecussion, and revolution follows, lly the knowledge of evil condition we appreciate the good. Progress in nations is the child of experience. The master builder was wise in making evil the real foundation for a more perfect humanity. Oppres ' sion and vice are not content with average returns. They , swell and augment until toleration ceases and a new era dawns by their overthrow. In our own government we find wrongs which are the more intoler ant because of their cupidity, but the wise man will see in these the brighter dawn of promise, for pro gression must surely follow in the way of evolution, as the world moves. Such law would not I amiss, and it was equallj true that the prohibition of marriage of males under twenty-one and fe males under eighteen would have a tendency to regeneration. But to be candid, the social conditions of today are far more resultant from lack of home training than are they from fault of statutory require ments. Parents who allow their young daughters to hold indiscrim inate companionship with men of mature years or permit them to go to church or other public places un attended are not proper people for the grave responsibilities cf mar riage and rearing of a family. A mother who will not give her daugh ter the advantage of her confidence, and her matured knowledge in the affairs of lite has no possible right to maternity. Home is the proper place for moral training and there is but little use to condemn the statute for not presenting what is but the result of sheer parental neg ect. This self styled pat riot deemed Bryan's chances for the presidency as very slim, and active ly engaged himself in working tor McKinley, giving out his interviews on the financial question with much self satisfaction. He was not turn ed out by Cleveland for partisan ship, as were many who worked for Mr. Bryan, but held his position expecting to remain in ounce as a McKinleycrat. Every lover of fan play is pleased that his successor has been named. Always an ar dent partisan enjoying a federal office under Cleveland when he saw his party driven to the wall by sheer force of circumstances; when ho thought Clevelandism was sure death to democracy, and that Mc Kinley would poll a nearly nnani mous vote, he deserted, hoping to be rewarded by retention in office, He is now running, self-appointed for the Chicago mayoralty, and by the grace of honest citizenship will be so badly beaten that he will think the world was made for some one but deserters. It is very amusing to note with what degree of equanaiuity the gold standard 'press is publishing the dissolution of the trnsts and com bines. Any one who understands the nature of these institutions hould be very reluctant to believe, and should watch history for a few years. Perhaps in the civilized : world no country entertains such a hatred towards these combines as does the United States. The trust promoters know this and they are not appealing lor sympathy. Neith er are they foolish enough to show an aggressive front. They do not want to make such a fight four years from now as did they last fall. So they now apparently dis solve, but only to re-form on more , arrogant and splendid lines. The metropolitan press will be with them and we shall hoar or know - but little of them from this source But they will exist and the geueral public will pay tribute .Instead of brazenly flaunting their power in the face of the people, by cupidity tliey will eat more und more into , lhe vitals ol the republic. Just lit this, time, ot course, it is Tery opportune for trusts to suspend Mr. Hanim has to willed it. The THE FRATERNAL QUESTION, Within the past one hundred years there has been a marvelous growth in secret fraternal societies, notwithstanding the great opposi tion encountered in the early part of the century. There is no ques tion but what the great majority of these orders have wielded a general influence toward a better citizenship. It is a mistake of course tu assume that a secret beneficiary or fratern al society will make a man out of a knave, or that a man is not a good father or citizen because of non membership, but those who have held memberships in such institu tions realize that they are product ive of a bond of fellowship that is not easily broken. They broaden the mind, open the heart and bring to many, in forcible object lesson that one can find others than him self to help in u-ore ways than one. The old objection that a man can discover this without being a lodge member is very true, yet we must remember that true fraternity is better handled where such is made more or less a matter of practice, NOTICE TO FIREMEN. . Mrs Wren, who has been quite sick for the past month, is slowly recovering. The United Brethren, who have been holding revival meetings at Leisyville, baptised six converts in the big swale on Mrs Wren's place Sunday.
