While the republican press keep telling us that the silver craze is dying out, it is a patent fact that Mark Hanna keeps on raising money to elect the gold standard candidate. Brad ford returned last Friday morning from Tacoina, whither they had at tended the trial of Wm. S ilkins, charged with passing counterfeit money. Speaking of silver calls to mind a good story told by Sheriff Rrad ford at the expense of Hillsboio's ex- Justice of tho Peace. It seems Mr. Wehrung was the only demo crat of the trio and the two discip les of McKinley were prone to guy Wehrung in public when occasion presented. This continuous attack made the Riyan man lose interest in life. But thinns changed one day, and Wehrung is yet smiling. It was thus: each street car iney were about to board, Knight would usk, "Is this a McKinley car?" As the majority seemed to be that way Wehrung grew soul sick and much tired of tho frequent question. At last, revenge came, and it was com nlfit.fi. Two cars stood on parallel tracks and the trio approached for transit. Hailing the nearest one, Knight called out, "Hey there! is this a McKinley car?" "No, sir, this is a Bryau car. Crops The rains delayed har vesting, and may have done some slight damage to grain in shock on low land, but as a whole, the rain did practically no ilamage, except to delay work. Harvesting will begin again today and will be nc tivelv prosecuted. Some little threshing has been done and the re suits have been better than was expected. A more general spirit of encouragement prevails throughout the country, ll must be admitted the grain crop is not equal to other years; yields of wheat of 25 to 35 per acre and outs 50 to 60 bushels j n r acre are commonly reported' Failures are spoken of when the yields are much less than thofe figures, yet there are few sections ol'lhe world that will produce wheat year after year and yield eyen 25 'btisheis of No. 1 wheat to the acre, and tins without manure lidded to the soil. As the greater portion of Western Oregon has always grown 25 or nioie bushels of w heat to the acre, a less v i Id causes the fanner to be discouraged. Spring-sown grain has made some improvement since the laitiS, but much ot it was so well nd va need that ihc rains 1 1 1 . . ! ( . etiti ot inn nine n any neneui. Fruit Some correspondents re poll that the raii.s caused mire fruit to fall. All conditions appear to he against fruit this year. Spec ial reports as to fruit have been re ceh'rd, in addition to those repott ed hist week. The correspondent at Langlois. Curry county, reports that the petite, silver and golden prunes have very good crops upon tli3 trees. The Tragedy prune has a fair crop. The Abundance, Sa trunia and Rhine Clouds have poor crops, while the Italian and Ger man prunes are an entire failure. The young trees are making a phe: nomenal growth. The peach, apri cot and apple crops continue to be reported as poor while pears arc cencrallv a fair crop. It must be frankly admitted that Western Or egon hi .s this year the poorest fruit crop, in quantity ami quality, that she has ever had. Late berries are quite plentiful, but the period of dry weather from June 10th to August 1st was very injurious to them. Vegetables The rains were of great benefit to gardens and vege tables. They were especially bene ficial to late planted potatoes; be fore the rains there was danger of ihe potato crop being short, while now the crop will be very fair. All vegetables are making rapid and aood growth. The rains were of inestimable benefit to pastures and tne second hay crop. A correspondent in lil- lamook county reports clover hay yielding five tons to the acre. No campaign since that of Jef ferson has lieen so abusive as the present one. From the gold stand ard press people are called fools and anarchists, gibbering idiots and all things despicable. This is the kind of argument they are putting up to elect their president. It won't do it. And now a cleryman, with a long face tells Mr. Bryan that he is a blasphemer. This fellow is a relic of the intolerance which was the power behind the incorporation of such institutions as the "blue laws" the Inquisition, and the Salein out rages fjr suppression of witchcraft. It certainly is 11 plain proposi tion that today confronts the Amer ican people and for that matter the people of the whole world. Those conditions which are most favor able to the money speculators are least favorable to the producers, who ure the ieal backbone of gov ernment. For instance no one doubts that a condition which gives those who have fixed incomes a good return of produce for their money equally gives the producer a poor return of money for his pro duction. The tendency of legisla tion in this country for a number of years has been to decrease the volume of currency. This means a larger measure of products for a smaller return of money.
