That kind of farming which is productive of reeul.s which call for government is too well known to need analysis. The hone and sinew of all government comprise this class. They produce that all may have and enjoy life. But there is another class of farmers and con ditions which favor the tillers of his reply: "and myself in paiticu-' W ith a production cotton iar." Indeed this paraphrase by j greater by three times than all the . if : t . useii is so purely personal ana ex planatory of Mr. Yates' position ac to almost cause one to deem the an swer not for uhlication. We declare that the act of 1873 demonetizing silver without the , knowledge or approval of the . American people has resul'ed in the appreciation of gold and a cor f responding fall in the prices of 1 commodities produced by the peo ; pie; a heavy increase in the burden of taxation, and of all debts, pub lic r.nd private; the enrichment of the money lending classes at home tmd abroad; paralysis of industries) and impoverishment of the people. We are unalterably opposed to the single gold standard, which has locked fast the prosperity of an in dustrious people in the paralysis of hard times. Goid nionoiue'tal ism is a British policy, founded upon British greed for' gain and power, and its general adoption has brought other nations into financial servitude to Loudon. It is not on ly un-America n, but anti Atueri .ttHtpWfd it can be fastened upon. taUnhed States onlv by the sti- ' Pi uAt 1. .. . :.. .1 . 1 . . , Brtnjtir nui, iiiuouiiiaoie s.pirn and - fffve of liberty which proclaimed our political independence in 1 77g and won it in the war of the revo lution. We demand the immediate res toration of the free and unlimited coinage ot gold and silver at the present legal ratio of lb' to 1, without waiting forth, aid or con sent of any other nation. We de mand that the standard silver dol lar shall be a full legal tender, equally with gold, for all debts, public and private, and we favor such legislation as will prevent the demonetization ot any kind of legal-tender money by private con tract. We are opposed to the policy Hnd practice of su rendering to the holders of the obligations of the United States the option reserved by law to the government of redeeming such obligations in either silver or gold coin. BOND ISSUES. We are opposed to the issuing of interest bearing bonds of the Unit ed States in time of peace, and con fish interest of money farmers. Take the history of our financial legislation for 30 years and see for which class of farmers laws have been enacted laws which benefit the producing farmer or laws which will make the money farmer's soil and business the more productive. The average historian, with the above thoughts, which are axioma tic, can find much food for reflect ion in the occurrences of legislation for the past twenty five years. Af ter the war had closed, this nation owed over two and one-half billions of dollars. Besides this it had put in circulation a vast amount of greenbacks which were being specu lated upon and in by the financial farmers. The nation's bonds were payable in coin, and in the early seventies agitation demauded the re sumption of specie payment. Pro gress was marking the track of the United States. The days of re-con-ftruction were on. People were busy building up their homes and developing new ones Little atten tion was paid to legislation. Here was the money farmer's opportuni ty. Arrange matters so these bonds should be payable in gold; arrange so all the greenbacks, many of which were owned by speculators, should be payable in like mime; ; deprive the silver dollar of its mon etary supremacy and make it n de preciated dollar; do these things and what would be the resuli? But one metal could be not have to bond and pay interest to bolster up a fictitious value, which existed commercially before holders of gold obligations encom passed a legislation erroneous and baneful in the extreme. The Oregoniiin is using methods which 110 metropolitan paper desir ing reputation for fairness or intel ligent argument fan afford to adopt. It constantly fills its headlines over press dispatches announcing the movements of candidate Bryan, with sneers and balderdash which would put to shame such publica tions as even the Sunday Welcome. Such methods might be practised by the weak country press, but for such journals as the Oregonian the usage, either for pay or. opinion, is unseemly, and in the end will only arouse the American instinct of a tair field and fair play. People will soon look upon this method as poor argument and the result will be an investigation into the merits of the financial question -and votes lot Mr. Brvan. Two British Empire relies upon the United States for a large per cent of her breadstuffs, meats, cot ton etc., and her speculators u ho hold bonds and collateral holdings against our goverment and proper ties are naturally alive to every op portunity which wiil give them more of our productions for their minted j volume of interest. This is but . . i 1 1 aim noaieu as primary money; an . natural and if thev take ih, ,l,i,, increased demand for gold wc-uld j ,v default no one'is to blame but naturally tollow; all values of land at d labor would be effected as con traction nould be an inevitable sequence and the money farmers those who dealt in stocks and bonds would be able to buy more of the produce with his interest. All these -things have came to puss. No one disputes it, and yet there are many who fioth at the mouth if aught be be said to effect that the working farmer has rights which the money farmer should not be allowed to subordinate. Americans. Every contraction of either English or A mr-nr-an currency volume means a lower price for American farm and field produc tions. Every true American will vote against a continuance of a money system which means degra dation of all that ourcountrv stands for. THAT UNPUBLISHED PONDENCE. CORKES. Mr. Bryan presented liis opponent for congress, Mr Connell of Omaha, a copv of "C.rav's Elegy," at the conclusion of a joint discussion in 1890. Mr. Hrvan said: "We now liriug to a close this series of debates which was arranged bv our committees. I aui glad that we have been able to conduct these discus sions in a courteous and friendly man lier. If I have in any way offended in word or deed, I offer apology and regret andasfieely forgive. I desire to pre sent to you in remembrance of these pleasant meetings, this little volume, lie cause it contains 'Gray's Elegv,' in the perusal of which I trust you will find as much pleasure ami profit as I have. They keep the noiseless tenor ot their way.' These are the ones most likely to be forgotten by the government. When they cry out for nlie"f they too often hear no answer but the 'echo of their cry.- while the rich, the strong, the pow erful, are given an attentive enr. For this reason is class legislation dani-erous and deadly. It takes from the least able to give and gives to tliose who are least in need. The safety of our farmers and our laborers is not in special legislation, but in equal and just laws that bear alike on every man. The great mass of our people are in terested, not in getting their hands into other people's pockets, but in keening the hands of other people out of their pockets. Let me in parting express the hope that you and I may be instrumental in bringing our government back to the netler laws, which will treat every man in ad our land alike, without regard to creeo or condition. 1 but vou a Ir endlv I IU R I t.
