REPUBLICAN LOGIC.
The republicans are starting in
arly to play upon partisanship.
: Thin, they reason, will-pull them
- 1 through. They rely upon their sag
acity in misrepresentation and par

state election. Will the rank and
,'"' ' fib of taxpayers be gullible enough
to let partisan statements blanket
the errors of the republican party
in Oregon? Perhaps they will, and
perhaps they will not. Under cover
of a nont de plume, last week's In-
, dependent contained a letter which
must have been written by a rank
- partisan, om' who, by the way, does
not stop to reason, but from his ex
pressions, goes to the polls with
nothing in sight but the words "re
y publican." "Equal Justice," the
, writer, contends the democratic
minority in "iar's legislature

make the taxpayers of Oregon, by

is now being boosted by -Portland
papers. Oregon farmers realie the
value of good roads and doubtless
will futher any reasonable attempt
to get them, but this proposition is
something like the devil preaching
gospel. Put a $10 tax on 'each
bievcle and let it bo into a state
road fund.

this is republican logic, and such
assertions can convince taxpayers
the republican ticket is the one to
be voted in the coming campaign,
then, for the sake of intelligence let
"us have a sample of g. o. p. argu
ment which is illogical. The writer
saya the democrats wasted their
time, contending they wouldd
Dolph. It is true, and ,
nuteg it, democrats cfit
walked out and effected Dolph s
election at ul most any time. But
people should remember the con
stituency of this state did not want
Dolph and furthermore, the dem
ocrats were elected on a principle
diametrically opposed by the vet
eran M. C. and his supporters. If
as the writer in the Independent
asserts, the-. minority was equally
responsible with the majority why
did not the "other half 'walk over
and elect a democratic congressman?
-But to illustrate the equality of this
"responsibility:" Out of ninety
members in the legislative body, not
a democrat was in the lower house,
and but seven or eight occupied
seats in the senate. That this little
nx cent, opposite in politics to the
Xinwieldy majority, is equally re
sponsible is sheer nonesense, and
child's contention. But "Equal
Justice" thinks it will catch the
young voter, and that is enough.
The fact of the matter is the re
publicans liad a majority which in
itself could not be controlled, and
no one but a demagogue would try
to whine out of the responsibility.
This responsibility , was clearly
demonstrated when it came to a
vote on the appropriation bill. The
"majority" passed it, and that ma
jority was republican. But to the
credit of the party in this county,
be it said, two of the republicans of
the lower house, Yates and Tigard,
voted no, t,nd one, Gates, voted yes.
As to the dtmocrat who was in the
senate, his vote was : recorded
against it. The ''responsibility"
rests, of course, with the entire re
publican party, and silly pettifog
ging, like "Equal Justice1', presents,
will not cover the true facts, nor
change the true version.
As a writer in a local paper said,
the democrats might at any time
have elected Dolph. The Altai's
will be more than willing to admit
this, and will further say there was
no doubt but if two of the democrats
had absented themselves when the
vote came on in the early part of
the season, they might have procur
ed some of the same material of
which the appropriation bill was
made. The fact that they did not
effect Doloh's election speaks well
for purity in democracy.
It is the party who is not sure of
his irround on a Question who

writes to newspapers and signs
nom de plume. The only wonder
is that such writers have judgment
enoueh for even this action, but

"EqrAX Justice" says: ''Only
when an ettravagant appropriation
bill came up were these democratic
politicians readv and more than
willing to hurry the same through,
i regardless of the general interest of
the people." The writer exhibits
his ignorance in this assertion,
which is a fair sample of the whole.
The fact is the appropriation bill
was voted against by four demo-
erats, three votinp for it. Each of
these three had a, bill in for his
constituency. Two of thefc bills
were for normal schools, and one,
Cogswell, (who is now turned re
publican) was for an attorney's fee
of 2000, chargpd as services in se
curing stale title to swamp lands,
A majority of the republicans voted
for the bill,-and a majority of the
democrats did not. So, of course,
"Equal Justice" either "Wrote in er
