A Mr. Wil son, who was one of the first on the scene, was severely burned, and had not some of those present dragged him out he would have met his death, The house was a total loss. No insurance. Dell Cornell and Frank Hol comb have been found guilty as charged in the Benton county Cir cuit court. They will doubtless serve time, as it is unlikely Judge Fullerton will grant a new trial, the evidence being conclusive. There are many Washington coun ty people who will feel thut Justice occasionally holds its own, and who will feel that for some time this county will be rid of a danger ous element. The District Attorney 'George M. Brown conducted his casein a very thorough manner, while the defendants were supplied with the best legal talent of Benton county at the State's expense. School Report. The following is the report of Hey wood School for month ending November 15, 185)5: Nnuber (lavs taught, 18; numb' r days a tend ance, 082; number pupils enrolled, 45;avnage number belonging, 44; average daily attendance, 38. Fol- lowing named pupils were present every day during the month: Blanche and Carl Oleson. Ilardd Taylor, Ethel Young, Lillian John son, Archibald and Miranda Wold, Charles and Sylvester Foricle, Win nie, Josie.-Warnie and Willie Hey wood, Lepha Carter. An offer of 5$ cents was made but no one senieed willing to sell. After consideration, the grow ers decided they would sell at, (11 hut the offer was declined, and the meeting was all for nothing. Soldiers of Indian War Resolve. Pursuant to a previous order, the Indian War veterans met Saturday last at the court house. The at tendance wiir not very large and but little business was transacted. A resolution was passed asking the houses of congress to give the sol diers of the Indian wars tne same pension privileges accorded the vet erans of the civil war. H. Weh rung presided with dignity but was unable to prevent Stephen Holcomh from delivering a fullgrown popu list address, which Secretary Sap piugtou neglected to spread on the minutes of the meeting. After ad journment Mr. Holcomb repaired to the comer of Main and 2nd, where hi entertained a small aud ience by applying choice and vine gary epithets to all opposed his po litical faith. A Bargain. Quite a number from this place attend ed a social dance at Andrew lack's last Friday night. All expressed themselves as navmg a good time. f good many of the farmers started in plowing this morning. There has hard ly been enough rain yet. Our neighborhood is rejoicing over the raise in butter, as everv one in this nlace sends more or less milk to the CreAinery. It is reported 50 cents per roll. Miss Etnnia Simpson returned last evening from a week visit with her Aunt, Mrs A Jack, ot farming ton. Mr Lindholm has moved in the Bran son house and intends to make a number of improvement! on the place. The Directors of this school Dis't. have made quite an addition to the school supplies in the form of two large Maps, one of Oregon and one of the United States. Our school is progressing nicely under the care of Miss Emma Tunison. There are about sixteen pupils enrolled. FROM MIDDLETON. Some of our hop raisers have sold but at a low figure. The telephone poles are up and ready for the wire. The Alaska Tea at the church last Thursday was liberally patronized and the W F M ladies were well pleased. F M Olds, of McMinnville, was visiting friends here this week. Mr Beatty rather denies the sfot im peachment ol being lost in the moun tains. He says the balance of the party was lost and he was bunting them. Mrs William Vincent was taken sud denly ill lat,t Monday. The doctor was summoned and she is now much better. Rev Hinshaw who has bad charge of the Friends' church here and at Sher wood the last year has severed his con nection here and accepted a call at Mar ion. All join in wishing him success in his new field. The singing class of Prof French is to give a concert in the near future. Last Monday was a day replete with festivities for Middleton. Mrs W J Smith wishing to celebrate her natal an niversary invited some of her friends to spend the day and take dinner with her. All who are acquainted with the culi nary abilities of Mrs S will be willing to admit that it must have been par excel lent when we say it was one of her best. In the evening by invitation, or rather by appropriation, the residence of Mr S Stein was thrown open and occupied for the time by a large crowd of merry mak ers, it being the anniversary of Mrs S and also the anniversary of their mar riage. All enjoyed themselves. Some indulging in the light fantastic until the wee sma' hours of the morning when all wended their way home feeling that it had been a red letter day for Middle ton. CENTERVILLE. The Centerville Literary and Debating Society was organized last Wednesday night at the school house. G W Marsh was elected president and Mrs C H Klanchard secretary and, treasurer. A good time is anticipated. Herman Gans has gone up near Gas ton to work this winter and the ladies in this vicinity will miss him very much. There was a social hop in this neigh borhood last Saturday night. A good time has been reported. There are a great many who are tak ing lame, blind and poor horses to the "boss works" at Linnton and returning with wild frisky ones. Herman Toelle is giving a lady friend lessons on the violin. She receives two instructions through the week and an extra one of Sundays. Mr Toelle is a good musician. BEAVERTON. A ball will be given in Beaverton hall November 27. Good music and a good supper will be had. Our town , though small , is not with out excitement. Tuesday morking about ten o'clock the chimney of Mrs Dank's house caught on fire and the smoke was emerging from the roof of the house so. treely that it caused many to tmnk that the fire was burning the roof and only lively work would save the building but glad was all when they found that it was the soot burning from the chimney and was out in half an hour later, Mrs Pike, Sr. who was quite ill last week is slowly improving. Mr Barnes, Sr. has been quite sick for the past two weeks but at last reports was some better. A debating society was organized last Saturday night and an entertainment was given by Prof Traver and the school. The program was excellent and was ap preciated by all present. ADDITIONAL LOCALS. Their old mill will be run at the present site for another year, and next season both will be in opera tion.
