Here in the Willamette Vallev. we have never in history known such a tiling as crop failure, and the fertility and endurance of the soil is some thing wonderful. i Entered at the Post-ofhce at Hillsboro, Oregon, as Second-clas mail matter. TIIUKSDAY, AUG 29. 1895. COMPARISON IN TRIPLICATE. s Human rnture is indeed a won- droits thing. Its manifold phases jnre enough to provoke the gods to laughter. Mortals will always be ; fools. The whole race is built alike i in this respect and the clay of one ; is the cloy of the other, Yet, oc i casionally, there are phases which j are more than ordinarily peculiar, and here is a comparison which thinking people might well con. This comparison, in triplicate, ex ists the world over, but more uni versally, in these United States. Approaching a prominent republi can the other day, he was asked his views on the present times and the probability of the future. He said: "Yes, the times are growing be'ter. Democracy can't knock Uncle Sam out in any four vears, and don't you think it. The hope vf a republican sweep next year 'encourages every body and the times are even now getting much better, 'despite the democratic misrule, and "crazy manipulation of national af-j fairs." As he began to look quite relieved, a democrat near by was interviewed. "How about the times? Why of course they are get ting better. Everyone feels the hard times yet, but the average 'mail feels the impulse of increased business activity. I'll tell you my friend, 24 years of republican mis rule and public extravagance near ly did us up, but Uncle Sam is all right yet, and the democratic party just gained power in time to save him. Yes, the times are getting better." A populist was then ap proached and lie, too, was asked to express his views. "No, the times are getting worse. Money is getting scarcer every day, and the country will soon consist of noth ing but Rothchild's and Goulds, so far as a poor man is concerned. The two rotten old parties' have robbed Uncle Sain shamelessly. For over 24 years the republicans held him down, taking all his increment, andj the democrats came in and the poor old fellow is drawn and quartered. No, the times are growing . worse every day. Those who would like to run on the democrat ic ticket are afraid that political landslides will bury them, while on the other hand prospective repub lican candidates are glooming in the darkness of uncertainty, not :iger for the public comment that would follow announcement. They are banking on a clean sweep, but ' they should remember that people are not universally so blind as to accept republican assertions that a democratic administration is re sponsible for the hard times of the last few years. Too many are in the habit of looking to 'cause irom ef- :fect' in this age lu be deluded into such belief. A good man, and fair field and the democrats will show eouie surprising strength. J. H. Mitcheli,, who doubtless lias aspirations to succeed himself its M. C from Oregon, will have the opposition of the Dolph forces and, perhaps, the venerable Dolph as well. Of cours1, it will be a long lime till election, and many things could occur which would shelve the eena tor, but were it to come to a popular vote at present, there would e no doubt as to the result. He stands pre-eminently above all oth er public men of this section with the common people, and unless he does something to mar his record, it uill be clear sailing when the lime comes. The secret of Mitch HI's popularity is that he is an ar dent worker, and extends every courtesy to the humblest of his constituents. Jas Palmlee returned from Vernonia last week and will remain in the city for awhile. Frank Fineout came out from Portland last week. M Klingt r threshed 99 bushels wheat from two acres. Who can beat that? Mr Russia, who lives near Blooming, left Saturday to be absent a month. Chas Schmidt, of Canby, visited Cor nelius this week. Donald McPherson and Al Eledsoe, of Buxton, did business in Cornelius Friday. R W McNutt left last Friday for a few days trip to the Netarts Beach, J W Clark and A A Phillips were in Hillsboro on legal business last Thurs day.' Harry Lamar, of Tillamook,, was in town Thursday with a load of salmon. Albert Wilcox, who has been under the doctor's care for some time is able to be again on the streets. ' Mrs Geo A Brown left Cornelius this Tuesday evening for Sacramento, to visit her brother and other relatives. Mrs Clai a Mosher, of Albany, came to Cornelius lnursday last, and while here visited Mr and Mrs J T Dorrein and her cousin and family, returning Monday, been born, he evidently realized that they had sininlv eone too far in fact had over-reached themselves. He perfected a little carriage, not "larger than lour feet square, and 12 Inches deep, which was placed over a coiupi.rtnieiit tilled with a gaseous substance not in the least explosive, and similar to that used in the inflation of balloons many years ago. The generative cower is so simple and so equalized, that a child can 'ranipulate the mechanism with east, and the motor is always under control. From the bot tom of the aerograph, is a pendant chain to which is attached what was ca led "governor" a generation back, intlieer of the s.teani engine. This attachment is used merely as an anchor, and the idea is borrowed from maritime circles, a'.tho it is used in travel over slightly undula ting territory, when the chain will pay out or shorten, as necessity requires. Wrhen not in motion the machine is so construcled that it can rest either on terra firma, or be suspended a few feet above. The occupants can easily enter the car by means of steps, and the motor being reliable and safe, the human face which lost its placid look of 50 years ago through a half-century pf fear produced by the pnxieties of bicycle riding, will doubtless regain its normal repose. Ac cidents will be unheard pf when they are generally 111 use. Two manufactories are now being built, one at Portland and one at San Francisco, the two principal cities in the new Oregon caliphate. It is stated that the aerograph will be olaced within the reach of all, costing but $35, and taking but 5 cents worth of the manufactured fluid to make a run of 600 miles, time, 3 hours, which is surely fast enough for the average traveler. The inventor is a scion of the family tree whose famous explorer, Meek, dis covered Oregon, and who, it is said, dronoed the snowball which ultimately grew into a mountain called Hood, but now designated Mt "Portland" owing to lis Having giuwu aw lyiu'j uiv ,00, Ou I aa J years that its base is fast pushing the j B residence part ot rortiana into tne ure gon(once called the Columbia) and Wit lamette rivers.'
