That thousands of motor-car racing fans will crowd the Tacoma speedway on July 4 for the tenth annua! track events is the prediction of Lloyd W. McDowell, director of exploitation for tne big classic, who has just returned from a tour of Washington, opening up ticket and information bureaus in the branch offices of the Automobile club of western Washington. i Reservation charts and speedway information will soon be available at points in Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia.. Each year racing fans come from as far as Montana and California for the annual race meet. Road. Are Better. The condition of the highways north cf Tacoma as far as Vancouver. B C, fcre better than they have been in th,e last six years, according to McDowell. Motor car bus lines are being estab lished covering miles of territory and with frequent service travel is being improved. Not only will the bus lines carry hundreds but hundreds more will come by steam and electric trains as well as by' private car. "There is more race talk right now than at any time s'nce the war" said McDowell. "In southwestern Wash ington, where ticket offices are now established at Olympia, Aberdeen and Hoquiam. Interest centers on the July 4 race. Offices will soon be" opened In Chehalis and Centralia. North of Seattle and Tacoma offices have been established in Everett, Mount Vernon and Bellingham. Reservation charts are displayed In Victoria and Van couver, as well as Spokane. Branch ticket offices also have been opened in Yakima and Wenatcliee. Lineup of Drivers Watched. "The big field of drivers coming to Tacoma this year is one of the gretTt attractions. Racing fans are now watching the lineup of drivers at In dianapolis for the Memorial day race of May 30 and look forward to seeing the internationally famous speed kings in action at Tacoma July 4. "There are thousands of members of the American Legion over the northwest and these boys are coming into Tacoma for the military pageant the morning of July 4 and the night show in the Stadium, both events under the direction of the legion. This will give Ample opportunity for the races of the afternoon of Independ ence day." The two-mile board speedway at Taccoma is in excellent condition, according to W. C. Baldwin, president cf the association. Baldwin said the first of the big drivers would be. in practice about June. 20. More than II men will come direct from Indian apolis to Tacoma. Shortly after the arrival of Presi dent Baldwin in Indianapolis to wit ness the Memirial day event at the Indianapolis metropolis the field of drivers for the Tacoma race will be announced. E IS 3LVCK TRrCKS WILL NOT BE " ALTERED, AS REPORTED. Company Still Convinced That Best Method of Power Transmission Is by Chain Drive. With the readjustment that has been brought about and the renewed production activities many changes have been made in the motor vehicle industry. A number of combinations of small producers have been an nounced and others are expected to' follow. Some passenger - car and motor truck companies have changed completely their previous types and others have made pronounced altera tions. This has created a question in the m'nds of prospective buyers as to what the future will bring forth and accounts for the declaration of the International Motor company, manu facturers of Mack trucks, to the ef fect that it will continue to use the r chain type of final drive. All Macks of a rated capacity of S tons and over are chain drive exclusively. It has been- said, after repeated tests of all sorts conducted by the International Motor company, that for heavy duty work the chain drive is preferable. The manu facturers of the Mack are the only large truck producers who retain the chain drive. This company is firmly convinced of the advantages of this type of power application and repeatedly has announced that this construction always will be retained. According to J. A. St'oner, vice president of the Mack-International Motor Truck corporation, distributors for Mack trucks in 11 western states, there have been false rumors that the International Motor company is abandoning chain-driven models. "Such statements have no founda tion on fact." says a letter from Mr. Stoner to H. H. Harwood, local Mack manager. "In the sale of heavy-duty trucks the Mack organization through out the west has been making a won derful record and the erroneous re ports in circulation represent an attempt to restrict our progress by creating doubt as to the future value of their equipment in the minds of the owners of the chain-driven Mack trucks." SIcKESZLE PASS STILL CLOSED Road From Eugene Xot Passable Cntil Late In June. ' EUGENE, Or., May 21. (Special.) The McKeniie Pass road is still blocked by deep snow, says H. E. Vin cent, deputy supervisor of the Cascade national forest, who has been up that way for several days. It Is not ex pected that the pass will be open for traffic until some time late in June or about the first of July, says Vin cent. ' S. L. Taylor and George Moody of McKenzIe bridge started to go over the pass a few days ago to bring back some horses from the other side of the mountain, but were compelled to turn back at Alder springs. The snow was seven or eight feet deep there. Radiator Xear Rear Axle. The motor and radiator f a new French automobile are mounted close to the rear axle, the inventor claim ing this arrangement permits the us of smaller and lighter bodies. T7ACH year the Annual Roll Call of White Truck Fleets in L actual service becomes more firmly established , as an institution in the motoi; truck industry.
