" . , V Over 60 Makes of Cars and Over 40 Kinds of Trucks Will Be on Display. SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 12. San Francisco Is preparing again to cap ture national honors for its great automobile show and this year it looks as if the recognition is nearer than ever before. The eyes of the automobile trade are already centered on the coming show And on February 19, when the fifth annual Facific show is in full wing, practically all of the big men in the national trade circles or their personal representatives will be oc hand for the event. Already the leading hotels of the city declare that reservations are pouring in for show week and it is prophesied that the show this year will draw more people than any ever. outside of the national convention that the city has staged for the last year. Thousands Are Interested. The importance or the automobile Industry is best realized by those who have made a careful study of the situation and who know actually how many men are actively connected w'th the glar.t industry. An auto chow of the importance of the coming fan Franaisco event affects all of these men vitally and hundreds of them will be on hand for the business that the show brings. The size and importance of the how this year is greater than ever before. Forty-eight distributors will exhibit over 60 makes of automobiles. And for each automobile at the show there is a network of dealer organiza tions spread throughout California that is vitally interested In the new features and refinements of cars which will be on display. Track Displays Promising. Then the trucks will also draw their quota of men. Forty makes of power wagons will be on display Thousands of farmers throughout the northern part of the state will have their annual opportunity to see and compare the various makes of trucks and to really find out at first hand which makes serve their purposes best. The show offers an opportunity that they will not have for another year and hundreds will take advan tage of the chance. Two days at ehow time will accomplish the same results as two weeks at any other time of the year. The accessories, too, will draw and the motorists as well as the out-of-town dealers will find much of in terest in the big accessory display which will be a feature of the com ing exposition. Automobile men look not only for the largest attendance, but also for the largest out-of-town dealer crowds that the local exhibition has ever drawn. Among the new makes of cars that will make their premier bow at the show are: The La Fayette, the Fiat, the Lincoln, the Sheridan, the Gardiner, the Ferrns. the Wills-Lee. the Olds mobile Four and the Jackson Six. The increasing number of makes of ca-s on display at the show this year is evidence of two things: First, the in creasing number of automobiles which are finding a reception In the west, and secondly, the growing prosperity am! importance of the automobile in-r'l's'ry. 1 car. Canse of Slipping Clntch, S. The clutch of the dry-cone type will slip even If the friction surfaces are not oily if the leather facing of the cone is worn, glazed or burned. Slipping is the result of a smooth hard surface of this leather which should be renewed. Noise In Rear Axle. 9. Noise in the rear axle may be caused by several different things. The construction of some differentials naturally produces a humming sound. This is not harmful. But if a harsh, grating noise is produced, or in a case of some cars If there is any noise at all there is a defect in the system which should be remedied. Some causes are lack 'of oil, use of the wrong grade or a poor grade of oil. gears out of alignment, chipped, burred or broken teeth, or if the car old the gears are undoubtedly worn, resulting in noise. Where to Locate Rattle. 10. Flay in the steering gear causes rattle and movement which can be felt by the driver when going over cobblestones or other rough roads. This is usually due to worn connections somewhere in the steer ing apparatus, such as at steering knuckles, clevise joints of the tie bar steering arm or is due to loose adjustment of reduction gears at the end of the steering column. Some times the bearings in the front wheels are loose, causing vibration and rat tle. This latter is only noticeable to the driver when the car Is traveling rough roads. This YTcck'a Questions. 1. A good grade of spark plug should always be used in the auto- xnooiie engine to insure against leak of compression or current as fre quently happens in a poor plug. After m. penoa oi use a cheap spark plug insulation becomes porous causing a weak spark, and leak compression at the points where it is put together. The result Is poor acceleration, and missing on high speed In heavy pull ing. Car Slops, Engine (tunning. 3. If your car stops on the road unintentionally on the driver's part but the engine continues running, first look beneath your front floor board at the clutch or transmission as it is probable that the clutch has in some way become loosened or disengaged or the rears have been dis engaged cutting off power to the rear wheel. It could be possible that the drive shaft or one of the universal has been broken or that gears of the transmission or differential are stripped. This, however, would not happen without more or less noise resulting which would of course be noticeable. Exhaust Valve Timing. 4. It Is necessary for an exhaust valve to open early, or before the piston reaches end of power stroke, to insure the complete passing out of burned gases, as the gases ex ert considerable pressure and re quire more time to Insure their com plete expuis on from the cylinder than would be given if the valve opened at the end of or after power stroke. Vegetable Oils for Motors. 5. Animal oils or greases or those of a vegetable source should not be used in the automobile because they contain acid which eats into the sur face of the bearings or any friction surface In the car, roughening it, leaving rust deposit and increasing Bad Roads Forgotten in Pleasure of Long Auto Journey. From Los Angeles comes a report of a car owner who has Just com pleted a 2000-mile drive from Greens- burg, Kan., to Los Angeles, over the Santa Fe trail, and declares he en joyed every minute of the journey. E. R. Smith is the gentleman, a busi ness man of Oreensburg. In describing his trip he refrained from the usual excoriation of the Ttocky mountain roads and the rutted desert trails, and stated that his Hud son and its Goodyear cord tires sur mounted all difficulties, allowing the J party of four persons to make the jaunt with absolute comfort and pleasure, despite the winter season. The tourists carried a camp outfit and tasted of the pleasure of camp ing out en route. Gasoline mileage averaged 15 to the gallon, and al though the tires had already run 1.1,000 miles, no tire trouble of any kind was experienced. Conserving Chains. It is a very good plan to shift the cross-links of the tire chains from time to time. That is move them so that they do not depend on the same link of the main chain all the time The wear and tear on the tire chain centers at the links to which the cross chains are attached, and for this reason moving these latter from time I to time spreads the' wear. Wheel Inspection Advised. One of the most frequent causes of excessive tire wear is faulty align ment of . the front wheels, which causes them to scrape the tire along the road surface at each revolution. Whenever excessive tire wear de velops the wheels should be inspected for misalignment, and if the car owner is not familiar with the meth od used in aligning he should have the service station do the job. Front wheels are always cambered and gathered; that is, they "toe-in" in front, making the distance from wheel to wheel in front less than that in the rear. . At the same time the distance between the points of contact with the road is less than the distance between opposite points. These distances vary with the dif ferent makes of cars, but usually the gather equals 3 per cent of the tire diameter. Thus, with 34-inch tire the wheel will be gathered about one inch. However, the car owner who proposes aligning his wheels should get the exact figure from the manu facturer or from the service station. Slipping on Grades Prevented.
