Welcomed by shouts of a crowd, who after her landing formed a parade and escort ed her through the streets to her hotel. Mrs.-Muriel MacSwiney, widow j of Terence MacSwiney, former lord i mayor of Cork, arrived today to assist others of her countrymen working: in America for the cause of Irish inde pendence. Scenes which marked the reception accorded her were colorful and dra matic. At earliest dawn hundreds began making their way to the pier Where the liner Celtic was to dock while harbor craft eteamed out to quaran tine for a first glimpse of the pale and dignified appearing young woman. Greeted by a committee of five women, including the- wives of the governor and mayor, who were per mitted to board the vessel. Mrs. Mac Swiney and her sister-in-law. Miss Mary MacSwiney, stepped onto the dock to be received by Harry Boland, secretary to Kavnonn De Valera, president of the "Irish republic," and other prominent Irish. The party then made its way to the street, accepted the homage of the crowd who waved ' flags and sang American and .Irish songs, and then in a taxicab headed the procession up Kifth avenue to the hotel. Beyond a short expression of thanks for her warm reception, Mrs. Mac Swiney made no statement. She will be in Washington Wednesday to ap pear before the committee of 100 in vestigating Irish affairs. Th etaxicab had' reached Twenty third street, seven blocks from the pier, before it was halted, and the welcomers fell into line. A band struck up with the Star Spangled Banner and the "Irish republic" airs, cheers were raised and the parade got under way. The city officially welcomed Mrs. MacSwiney throusrh Grover A, Whalen, commissioner of plants and structures, representing Mayor Hylan. rown the Tay J. L,. Fawsitt, "Irish consul" at A'ew York, and personal representa tive of Eamonn De Valera, president jf the "Irish republic," accompaniad by Oswald Garrison Villard of the com mittee of 100, met Mrs. MacSwiney going out to the Celtic on the coast guard cutter which put customs and newspaper men aboard the liner. The police boats Patrol and John F. Hylan carried welcoming delega tions down the bay with representa tives of a number of organizations' of Irish sympathizers to meet the Celtic. INIrs. Peter MacSwiney and Mrs. Annie MacSwiney Dixon, cousins of Mrs. MacSwiney, shouted a welcome from the Patrol. Mrs. MacSwiney expressed gratifi cation at the "wonderful" reception given her. She said she was happy "to be in a country where so many people are thinking about the cause of Ireland." "Both my husband and I always expected that America would help us in winning our freedom," she said. "We feel in Ireland that America has a greater responsibility in the mat ter than any other land on account of her fine traditions and her war plodges and because there are so many millions of our kin in this country." Mrs. MacSwiney said she could not discuss conditions in Ireland until she had appeared before the commit tee of 100. She said she expected to testify in Washington next Wednesday. Xapavine to Have Newspaper. CENTRALIA. Wash., Dec. 4. (Spe cial.) Napavine is to have a .news paper in the near future, to be pub lished weekly. E. H.
