ALLEGED GIFTS CITED Sihveiware Declared Found In Yo kohama Hotel Bearing Label of "U. S. B." NEW YORK, Xov. 27. The name of Norman R. Hamilton, collector of the Port of Norfolk, Va.-today was again mentioned in testimony before the congressional committee investigating Ahe United States shipping board. Harold F. Hanes, examiner for the fmergency fleet corporation, formerly n investigator for the board, said that while in Norfolk he had been ad vised that if his inquiries included Mr. Hamilton, it would be well for him to "lay off," as Mr. Hamilton was the "closest man in Virginia to Presi dent Wilson." Hanes said the alleged warning did not deter him from continuing his work, but he added it was not com pleted by him. He said that at Norfolk, Va.. he saw a bill for $48, which had been paid for putting a 50-cent hinge on a galley door. He testified that 25 men had been sent aboard a ship in the same port and remained there from 7:30 A. M., Monday, to the same hour the fol lowing Monday, and were allowed pay for 39 hours a day. On another occasion, he said, 12 carpenters were put to work at one time in a" wireless room which measured four by four fe L Hanes also testified to investi gating gifts of watches and stock to shipping board employee..- Short deliveries and overcharges for beef furnished -to the emergency fleet ship also was alleged by Hanes. He said 24 cents a pound was paid for 11-cent beef. Payment of a commission of $1000 on en order of $14)00 to a ship cap tain at Portland, Or., also was tes tified to by Hanes. The name of the ship was not given." The commission, he said, was paid by the Portland branch of a Boston ship supply firm. Discovery of silverware marked "U. S. S. B." In a hotel at Yoko hama and street vendors selling ship- ping board linen at La Pallice ateo was testified to by Hanes. He said he did not know whether these mat ters had been investigated. DAVIS OUT FOR CABINET IVicnds of Governor of Idaho Launch His Candidacy. THE OREGOXIAN NEWS BUREAU, Washington, Nov. 27. (Special.) Impetus was given to the movement for the appointment of Governor D. W. Davis of Idaho as secretary of the interior by the arrival here today of Frank Brown of Boise, Governor Da vis' secretary, and Robert O. Jones, secretary of state of Idaho. Both declined to say that they had come here to promote appointment of the Idaho governor, but it was no ticeable that wherever, they went they left a trail of apparent Davis sentiment. Calls were made on sev eral senators, including Senators Borah of Idaho, Jones of Washing ton and MeXary of Oregon, and a few republican leaders. The conference with Senator Mc Na.ry was said to have been solely with reference to reclamation mat ters in which the , state of Idaho is interested, Senator McNary being chairman of the senate committee on irrigation. LEADERS IN CONFERENCE Latter Day Saints Hold Training Classes at La Grande. LA GRANDE, Or., Nov. 27. (Spe cial.) The church of the Latter Day Saints Is holding a three-day leader ship institution, w'lich beqran Friday and will continue until Supday eve ning. The institute is under the di rection of the social advisory com mittee of the church. All of the ses sions were held in the tabernacle, and papers, lectures and demonstra tions are being given by local as well as Salt Lake leaders. Representatives from the various branches- of the church, including some from Baker county, are in at tendance at the institute. Teachers of the high school have spoken on dramatics, teacher training, story telling, physical activities, leader ships in physical culture, while other local leaders have spoken on folk dances, music, public speaking and pageantry.
