THE SUNDAY OREGOXTAX, PORTLAXD. NOVEMBER 31, 1920 POTATO PRICES HAVE VERY WIDE RANGE Quality of This Year's Crop Is Not Even. FEW HAVE BEEN MOVED Shippers Pay From $1 to $1.50 at Valley Points, According to Quality. There haa bwn no improvement in the potato situation and the trade does not look, for any soon. bales tor shipment to outside points have been few in num ber and the wide range of prices ruling how the erreat variation in the quality of the crop. A few cars were bought Jn the ralley during the week at $1 and other cars of the beat grade were pur chased . on the east side at $1.50. These were taken for shipment south. In the jobbing trade retailers pay any where from LuO or even lower, up to $2, according to quality. A good many f the country offerings are inferior and some unsaleable because of rain damage and blight. There are also many com plaints by dealers of poor grading by growers. Quiet conditions alio prevail in other northwestern markets. Idaho growers are getting $1,106-1.20 for Rurals and $1.25 491.20 for Russetts. The harvest was late In that state as in other sections. Ship xnents from Idaho during October ran from 800 to 1000 cars less than for the same period last year. This decrease may be attributed partly to . backward digging a.nd partly to the fact that many growers are storing their crop on the farm and holding for better prices. More or less scarcity of cars has tended ' to retard the movement because local dealers have been unwilling to buy potatoes except for immediate shipment. The eastern markets during the past week were generally steady. Round whites at New York shipping points ranged from $2 to $2.15 a hundred. Conditions were somewhat unsettled late in the week, prices closing $2$2.10. At Maine f. o. b. markets, bulk Irish Cobblers and Green Mountains declined 10 dp 15c per 100 pounds, closing at $1.75 ) 1.80. Northern . round whites were steady at a range of $1.8(VfT2.08 f. o. b.. with the movement light. Haul tugs have been light also in Rocky mountain producing sections and prices steady at $1.151.&5. Maine Cob blers and Green Mountains sacked and bulk were steady In New York and Bos ton at $2.35(2.50. Eastern round whites were dutl and steady at $2.10(2.65 in consuming markets. Sacked northern round -whites partly recovered last week's sharp decline in the Chicago carlot market, prices showing a net gain of lO 15c, closing at $2.05 2.15. Other consuming markets were firm' and advanced moder ately to a closing range of $2.10 fg 2.65 Shipments were lighter than the pre ceding week with 5046 cars compared with 60.10 and with 4470 during the cor responding week last season. WHEAT AT LOW POIT OF TEAR BmatI Amount of Selling Reported From Country at Current Prices. 'Wheat prices on the local board fell trf the lowest point of the year yesterday. when $1.50 was bid for hard white .and club, $1.45 for other white grades ana $1.42 for red. These offers were 2 to 5 cents lower than those of Friday. Country reports told of a little business being done with farmers at the decline. The feed' cereals were also weak. Oats averaged 50 cents lower and yellow corn dropped off $1.50i 2.50. Barley bids were the same as the day before. No change was made In the flour list, fcut the price of millrun was cut another aollar. - The weather forecast for the middle west, as wired from Chicago: "Region of Great Lakes, temperature normal with overcast, rains and snows "Wednesday,, fol lowed by considerable colder. Ohio valley and Tennessee normal temperatures until "Wednesday or Thursday, then fair and considerably colder." London reports 17,000.000 bushels of Ar gentine corn headed there. Italy was in the market for rye and obtained 100,000 bushels Friday at the seaboard at 21 cents over Chicago De cember. Terminal receipts, tn cars, were re ported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Portland fTht. Bry. Fir. Oats. Hay. It looks now like a steady market with enough to go around and no surplus, but It Is never safe to predict what the supply will be until the last moment, as many shippers fail to serve notice to receivers as , to the quantity they will forward. There were also fair arrivals of other dressed poultry. Fat geese were quoted at 35 cents.. Live poultry sold at the usual prices, but not much business in this line is expected in the coming week. Country dressed meats dragged at lower prices. Pork sold mostly at 14 15 cents. but some good light hogs went as low as 12 cents. The top price on. veal was 15 cents. SHARP DROP IN LENSEEO OIL NOTED Decline of SS Cents Gallon Is Announced. Turpentine mad. Lead Also Lower. -Sharp declines in linseed oil and turpen tine are announced, reflecting, lower mar kets at primary points. Linseed oil is down 2S cents a gallon and at 96 cents for raw oil in barrels,, the market Is under the dollar point for the first time since Octo ber, 1916. The top price was $2.46 in Au guKt last year. Turpentine declined 10 cents to $1.56 for case lots. Vt hite and red lead and litharge are le lower. The new quotation in ton lots is 13 cents a pound. . Hop Market Is Lifeless.' The week passed without report of a single bale of hops being- sold. The eastern trade shows absolutely so Interest and Eng lish demand is .lacking. The English gov ernment has uwued a permit for the im portation of 3000 bales from' this country. Thin applies to hops already purchased and has no bearing on the market. In the ab sence of business it is Impossible , to ay what hops are worth now. No Change in Print Butter. Ko announcement was made yesterday of any change In print butter prices for the opening of the week. Cubes were In some-, I what better supply but sold at the previ ous day's prices. Kggs did not go out as well as usual on Saturday. Prices were unchanged and are likely to remain so for the week. Bank Clearings. Many Xew Low Records for Tear Are Scored Kails and . Shippings Firm. NEW YORK, Nov. 20. Today', brief kmIod of the stock market began with fresh unsettlement, due to renewed liqui dation and professional 'pressure anions' leaders of the steel,' equipment and oil groups. Crucible Steel extended yesterday's heavy loss by almost five pointa to the year's low or so. and Baldwin Locomotive ana Mexican Petroleum- Joined the many mini mum quotations for the last 12 months. Sundry specialties continued to ease on what seemed like belated selling of pool holdings. , These adverse factors were balanced by the firmness of rails and shippings, but buying was mainly for short covering to close contracts. Sales were 575.000 shajrea. Advices and general developments - were more encouraging. ' Bonds were dull and uncertain, although several liberty Issues and the victory notes closed at moderate advances. Total sales, par value, $7.175,QpO. Old United States bonds were unchanged on call for the week. - . The clearing house statement disclosed a surprisingly moderate decrease of actual loans and discounts, considering the week's drastic liquidation of stocks. Reserves of members at the federal reserve bank de creased about S24.4O0.OO0 and excess re serves fell to slightly less than S12.500.000, against the previous week's total of S32,. 200,000. , . , ,.' . , Among professional traders, every .suc cessive setback evoked grave references to the "healthy reaction" or "salutary re adjustment." There was ample Justification for the belief that much of the latest liquidation, especially in rails and oils, emanated from European centers, notably London -and Amsterdam. The. weakest spot in the foreign' situa tion was that comprising Latin-American countries. Further cancellation or abso lute rejection of imports from e.his market to Cuba and Central and South America gave point to the suspended dividends of the American International corporation. Additional price concessions in steel Iron, copper and other raw and finished materials were measured In terms of cur tailed production, deficits in earnings and reduced wages. Rates for call and time accommodations were easier, but the deadlock in the in vestment situation and absence of new capital offerings seemed to carry their own refutation of any actual improvement in the money market- GOLD BESEBTE RATIO INCREASED Seven-Tenths Per Cent Gain Is Keeorded in Pas, Week. y WASHINGTON", Nov. 20. STOCKS FALL WITH COMMODITIES Climax of Inflation During ' First Half f the War. NEW YORK. Nov. 20. Quoted Values continued to melt away in the securities market tills- week until the average fell to tne years lowest, wnne several indi vidual issues were at bottom prices for two to five years. . The further demoralization on the stock exchange was in keeping with conditions in the industrial, cotton, grain and other sammoaity markets and was again popu larly ascribed to the world-wide strain on credits. In responsible banking circles, where no attempt was made to minimize ths sig nificance of ths reversal, tha movement was regarded aa an Inevitable cltmax of the Inflation and other excesses witnessed here in the first half of the world war.
