A eoclety to elevate and regulate the practice of chiropody In the state of Oregon has just been organized under the name of the State Fedlo society, -which filed articles of Incorpora tion yesterday with the Multnomah county clerk. The officers are Dr. O. O. Fletcher, president; Dr. Carl Lev en, vice-president; Dr. "William DeVeny, secretary, and Dr. J. M. Installs treasurer. BOOTLKOQERB HEAVILY FINED. Phil Polsky was fined 1000 and Claude V. Dudrey and George D. Fifer were fined $500 each In the federal court yesterday for violation of the prohi bition laws. R. D. Steach of Eugene was fined $100 for attempting to make moonshine, although he con fessed that he had made a failure of the undertaking. Joe Fucci was fined $100 because a bottle of wine which he owned-had been sold. The court. In Imposing the fine, explained that he had sympathy for Puccl for he belonged to a race which has been accustomed to having wine with meals. Democrats Goino to Ohio. George Alexander. United States Marshal, will escort Carl Alff to Ohio where the latter will be tried on a charge ot violation of the Mann act. While In the east Mr. Alexander will hold a proxy from Dr. J. W. Morrow, demo cratic national committeeman, and will attend the meeting at which Cox will be notified of his nomina tlon. Elton Watkins, president of the Jackson club . and presidential elector, will also attend the notifica tion with the proxy of Will It. King. Court Names Executor. Morris A. Richter is named as executor of the .estate of the late Philip Richter, who died in Portland July 19, In the will which was filed for probate yester day in the Multnomah county cir cult court. R., and resident of Oregon City, has received his second patent on washing machines. The last pat ent was received June 28, 1920. The washing machine is a simple labor-saving device whereby 50 pieces may be washed In a short time. While experimenting with the machine a few days ago 50 pieces were placed in the machine. Some were large. After they had been washed in the machine for about 11 minutes they were removed and found to be per fectly cleansed. " The machine is so simply operated that an 8-year-old child has been able to get out a fair-sized washing. Mr. Gray believes now that he has in vented one of jtbe easiest operating washing machines and he Is planning to manufacture these In the near future. A substantial framework supports a zinc tub and a canvas, about three feet in length to which are fastened wooden slats, forms the simple wash ing machine. After the clothing has been placed In the tub over which water Is poured, some of the slats remain at the bottom while otners are at both ends, thus allowing plenty of slats to do the cleansing. Even If the tub is filled with cloth ing the lever works as easily as If it were half filled. One "or the pleasing features is that the clothes need no Washing; machine invented by Saannel Gray. further washing after they have passed through the machine. Mr. Gray Is contemplating estab lishing a small manufacturing plant In Oregon City and will probably sell the machines for 314 or 316. Mr. Gray came to Oregon In the fall of Benjamin Harrison's election and has resided in the state since that time. He knew the family while residing in Indiana and while visiting at Pendleton, the president enjoyed s conversation with the old soldier, who had later taken up his resi4ence there. Mr. Gray Is still full of "pep" and saye he has seen the "elephant." Having passed through the thickest of the fights during the civil war, receiving wounds that no doubht would have killed others, he has taken trips In a balloon and this spring was among those to brave the air in a hydroplane brought here from Portland. Although he went up more than zooo leet, he aeKea tne flyer to rise to 3000 feet. Gray saye he saw more country in 15 minutes in the hydroplane than he could see in 15 days by automobile and is ready to take a similar trip whenever a chance Is afforded him. . Miss Lewis, however, will continue with her original contract and sing HUNGER STRIKER IS FREE Brother of Portland Man In Serious Condition From Experience. Word was received last week by Rev. J. P. O'Flynn. rector of St. Peter's church, Lents, who recently returned from a visit to his parents in Ireland, that his youngest brother, Joseph, has been released from a London prison in a critical condition following hunger strike of 14 days as a protest against non-political treatment and continued incarceration without trial. r ather O Flynn was visiting his parents after an absence of ten years and three days after his arrival, he says, bis brother was arrested by military force of 150, "armed to the teeth," and taken away to prison. Af ter serving two months in prison he was released and immediately rear rested and was. still In prison when father uuiynn sailed for America. It was in the Wormwood Scrubbs prison in London that JoseDh O'Flvnn inaugurated his hunger strike. While in prison he had the unique distinc tion of being elected by popular vote to the highest offices that his city ana county coma Destow. TEACHERS ARE SCARCE SO Rural Schools Thought to Be Without Instructors. OREGON CITT. Or., July 31. (Spe cial.) There is a scarcity of teachers for the rural schools of Clackamas county, and to the present time there are 60 schools that have not reported to the county school superintendent, Brenton Vedder, tfnd Mr. Vedder con siders these without teachers. Those having teachers have set the time for commencement of the fall terra as September 7. There are 142 schools in Clackamas county. This includes city schools, and the salaries now being paid in the rural schools range from $85 to $150 There is one paying the $150 pe month salary, this being at Crescent, about two-miles from Oregon City on the Abernethy road. . Thomas E. Whiteside, whose, death came suddenly as the result of heart disease, while he was at the wheel of his automobile, July 19, at Third and Burnside streets, was a member of Al Kader temple of the Shrine. In the Masonic bodies his membership had bean retained in the blue lodge at Janesville. Wis., though he was a resident of Portland for the past 14 years. The funeral was conducted by Sel'wood lodge.
