ROADWAYS REPORTED GOOD Overtrade Crossings South of Ash land Being Rushed by Con tractors Crews. ASHLAND. Or, July 31. (Special.) Excellent progress is being made on the various paving contracts on the Pacific highway in southern Oregon and on grading contracts on various market roads in this district. The "hot stuff crew of the Oskar Huber company on Thursday moved their base of operations on the Siski you grade from the lower levels where they have completed their work, to' the vicinity of Stlman station. About three-quarters of a. mile remains to be paved in that vicinity to complete the pavement from the foot of tha mountains to Siskiyou station. The mixing plant located just south of Ashland will be temporarily shut down when the gap on which ths crews are now working is closed, and, the plant at the summit of the Siskl yous opened to furnish material for the higher levels. There is about two miles of pavement laid last year from the California line toward Oregon and about two miles on each side of the, summit yet unpaved. The plant on the valley floor has exhausted the piles of material which quarry and sand-pit crews have been accumulat ing the past year. By the time the work on the higher levels is finished the base of operations will be moved back to the Ashland plant and the five uncompleted miles on the valley floor paved. Overtrade Croaslag Unshed. Providing the weather holds good the pavement from Ashland to the California line will probably be fin ished this fall with the exception of a three-quarter mile stretch where ths establishment of a new grade has been made necessary by the plans of the Talent irrigation district who are to build a large irrigation storage reservoir which will put water over the route originally established for a short distance. Work on an overgrade crossing over the Southern Pacific railroad tracks, two miles south of Ashland is being pushed. At present a detour is necessary because of this construc tioitr Xh deteur is no longer than the highway .and is in excellent con dition. North of Ashland the pavement fs completed to Oold Hill and will be done in a week or ten days from Grants Pass south to Rogue river. The Rogue river-Gold Hill stretch will probably be completed before the Siskiyou section is completed and with good luck the Pacific highway will be practically complete from Grants Pass to the California line by late fall. The county court of this county and the state highway commission have decided upon graveling a six-mile portion of the Ashland-Klamath Falls highway, and bids are being asked for the work. The grading is about one- third completed on this highway. which leaves the Pacific highway seven miles south of Ashland. At present the road is rough but is pre ferred to the Hornbrook route to the Falls. The daily auto stages make the trip in about five hours. Road to Be Popular. The new "dead Indian" route to Crater lake will become popular next season, it is predicted, when the grad ing of a new route with a 6 per cent maximum grade up the Dead Indian mountain is completed. This work is about half done and when finished will eliminate several miles of steep grades. This route Is extensively used at present despite the climb, by scores of valley residents who have summer homes at Lake of the Woods, and by a few tourists. Road condi tions are reported as follows: Grants Pass-Gold Hill., detour on north bank of Rogue. Detour-good, Gold Hill-Ashland, paved. Ashland-California line, paved two miles south of Ashland; rough going over four miles to pavement; paved nearly to Siskiyou with one or two short breaks; Siskiyou to summit good; summit to pavement, two miles, rough; last two miles paved. California-Yreka line, good macad am. Ashland-Pelican bay, road good to within nine miles of Lake of the Woods; nine miles rough stretch; fair from Lake of the Woods to within two miles Pelican bay; two miles rough account logging operations; , Pelican bay to Crater lake, good (easy two-hours' run). ASHLAND-Crater lake (Rogue river . route), most cars going by Bybee , bridge, good to trail; bad stretch nine miles near Prospect, badly cut up; good on to within six miles of Park entrance; six miles fair, but narrow road, quite rutted; Park roads excel- lent. Six-hour run from Medford. - . Ashland-Klamath Falls, good to Keen creek, rough to Klamath line; good on to Falls. Ashland-Marble Caves (trail only last nine miles, horses available). good either Dy irants Pass or by Applegate valley. LABOR DAY PLANS MADE Vancouver Union "Workers Arrange for Programme. VANCOUVER, Wash.. July 31. (Special.) Labor day will be appro priately celebrated in this city by the union workers, who will be joined by meeting was held by the Central"' Labor council here last night, when plans were made for the celebration. . The detailed programme has not yet been worked out, but exercises with speaking and music will be held in the city park. There is to be a parade with every union in the city and county represented, in addition to athletic contests. The farmers themselves win hold a farmers" picnic August 22, at a place to be selected soon. The picnic will be under the auspices of the Farmers' Non-Partisan league and Walter Thomas - Mills is to be one of the i speakers.
