Robert Edeeon is the doctor who discovers that "Ma ma" isn't sick at all, but on the con trary is very healthy, and he there upon proceeds to separata the girl from her mother and effect a cure for both, incidentally falling in love with the young woman. There is nothing conventional In the author's treatment of her charac ters and there is no doubt that this play will be greatly enjoyed by theater-goers In general. Grace George has the leading role in "The Ruined Lady," a comedy' by Frances Nordstrom, at the Flay House. Of late our theatrical heroines have become very daring, as is proper in this feminist age. Instead of. waiting for the men of their choice to come to them, they go after them. And so does Ann Mortimer, the character played by Miss George. , Ann has been waiting for 12 years for Bill Bruce to propose to her, but Bill never comes to the proposing) point. So Ann goes to his house one evening to compromise herself eo hopelessly that he will have to marry tier to save her name. A young nephew and two chorus girls chance to come to Bruce's house and that of course complicates matters and poor Bill has a lot of explaining to do. The dialogue is snappy and the play is the type that should appeal to New York theater-goers. - the, fruit sold abroad. .While under the normal value of the pound ster ling on exchange the fruit, selling at the maximum price, would return about $J. under the existing rate, now less than $3.50, growers will net only $1.70 per box. The local office of the British ex porters has mailed; th following cir cular to all its affiliated shippers: "Unless you specifically request that fund's credited to your account on English sales be forwarded to you when due. the same will be held in England until th exchange rates are more favorable. "It is extremely doubtful If ' ex change rates will be normal for some time, but we have every reason to be lieve that within the next tew montns there will be some improvement, ana every cent that exchange advances means iust that much more net to growers. "We have been Informed by our London office that they think they can arrange to have these funds which are held draw interest at prob ably 8 per cent. Even if our grow' ers are forced to borrow money at 8 oer cent, they are losing only 8 per cent a year interest, and are standing chances of gaining 30 per cent on exchange. cwMerclianclise of CMeri r Maytag Electric Washing Machine i l Or a ce Yale titi e Soon t fie Jefsi in AfervftrJc in & jerir may. N' BY ELIZABETH LONERGAN. -EW YORK. Feb. 7. (Special.) Otis Skinner's hew play "Pie- tro" is playing at the Criterion theater and from all accounts it looks as though he has another "Mr. Antonio." It is true that some of the critics claim that there are too many "dramatic tricks" in the plot, but it was well received by the audience and seems destined for a long and prosperous run. The authors are Mrs. Otis Skinner and Jules Eckert Good man, the latter well known to Fort land people. Mr. Skinner plays the role of an Italian whose wife disappears and is tried for her murder. He is acquitted. Eighteen years later he is living in great prosperity with a lovely daugh ter. Then the supposedly dead wife turns up and her rusband finds difficulty in claiming her as his wife because he told his daughter a pretty little story about a sainted and dead mother. The climax of the play is decidedly interesting, however, and provides the "surprise finish" which audiences seem to like. The star is supported by a very able cast including Sfary Shaw, Ruth Rose, Thurlow Bergen and O. B. Clarence.' , ' "Mamma's Affair," by Rachael Bar ton Butler, the present attraction at th Little theater, has evoked un stinted praise from the 'blase New York critics, who have learned from experience to view prize plays sua picioasly until their merit has been demonstrated.
