For this reason, a play that was considered a masterpiece 10 or 15 years ago, viewed In the light of present-day standards, will appear hopelessly creaky and old-fashioned. -It will, therefore, be interesting to the thousands of theatergoers who witnessed David Warfield'8 playing of "The Auctioneer" 18 yearsago, to know that the years which have in tervened since he laid the part aside have in no way diminished its popu larity or lessened its power to reach the heart. And on February 12, II and 14 at the Heilig everyone will have another opportunity to renew their acquaintance with the gentle old east side peddler, Simon Levi, one of the most lovable and appealing char acter studiea that has ever graced the American stage. - "You know, as a matter of fact," said Mr. Warfield recently, "the things that live are the great char acter studies, and curiously enough actors are remembered, not for the plays they appeared In, but for the special characters they portrayed.
