Proofl that the communist party ie a develop ment of left wing socialists will be offered at - the trial of Benjamin Gitlow, who is accused of criminal anarchy, according to the statement of Assistant District Attorney Rorke in opening the government's case Fri day. Gitlow. formerly an assembly man from the Bronx, is charged, as publisher of the Revolutionary Age, organ of the communists, with print ing a manifesto of the left wing so cialists which, it is said, urged over throw of the government by violence. The present socialist party is the right wing, according to Mr. Rorke. It favors use of the ballot to bring socialism about, while tne com munists, formerly the left wing, urge violence, he said, and oenounce tne right wing as moderates. Nathan Eikin, a printer, testified tht Gitlow suDDlied the copy of the manifesto and that 16,000 copies of the Revolutionary .Age containing it were published. Bids for the construction of a three story fine engine house on Fourth and Taylor streets have been adver tised by City Purcnasingr Agent Mc intosh. The bids are to include the contemplated fire engine house and also a comfort station to be located adjacent to the station house. The bids must be presented to the city auditor by 10 A. M. on February 14. The station house will be the new home of engine and truck company No. 1, formerly located at the station house on Fourth and Tamhill streets. It is expected that construction of the new building can be completed within four months. ' Bend Elks to Initiate. BEND, Or.. Jan. 31. (Special.) A special dispension of Bend lodge, No. 1371, B. P.
