THE SUA DAY OKEGOMAX, TOKIXAXD, JANUARY 11. 1920 2! FALL APPLES ARE " HOT YET CONSUMED East Has Not Begun to Eat Winter Fruit. FROZEN STOCK DEPRESSES Market During "Week Exhibited Easier Tendency; Cheaper Grades Are Moving locally. Stocks of apples on the local market were large and with the demand small and kuylnr confined principally to culls and Jumble pack, the tons of prices was easier. Dealers quoted Spltzenbergs, extra fancy, st $2.753. according to size; Rome Beau ties, extra, fancy at $3.25 and fancy at S: NmrtoTM, $28: Ortleys at $1.B02.M. nd some frosted Winesaps, fancy, me dium sizes, at $1.75. In the eastern markets, frosted boxed apples continued to be a bear factor, but the trade here is equally concerned orer the fact that the east is still eating; fall apples, while the winter rarietlea have scarcely been touched. There are hopes that this situation will soon be remedied, however, as some Inquiries for Hood River Kewtowns have been lecelved. Apple shipments from Oregon on Friday were 20 cars. Boston wires reported sales f extra fancy Staymens at $3.25 and frosted extra fancy Jonathans and Spitzen tergs at $2.25 2.35. At New York, three cars of Wineeaps averaged $2.01 at the auction sale. Chicago reported average prices of $2.95 on Winesaps, $3 on Deli cious, $2.55 on Jonathans and $2 on Rome. Pittsburg sold frozen Winesaps as low as $1.80. No carlot sales were reported In the northwest during the day except rollers. Yakima quoted fancy Homes, medium and large, ar $1.75. Shipments of boxed apples for the week were 669 cars, a gain of 52 over the preceding week. In the barreled apple markets, western New Tork shipping points reported Bald wins A-2V4 slow and draggy at $7.50 per barrel f. o. b. Leading Jobbing markets quoted this stack about steady at $7 8 for best lots. New York Greenings A-2V? were steady to firm in New York ar.d Chi cago at $9$ 10. Southeastern York Impe rials ranged $6.508, and middle western Jonathans slightly weaker at $3.50 9. 20. Barreled apple shipments were 209 cars, an increase of 24 over the previous week. Exports of apples from September 1 to txscember 4 were 363.004 barrels, of which nearly two-thirds were shipped In No vember. British apple markets have been slow and weak. The best Maine Baldwins were quoted at $8 a barrel at Liverpool on De cember 2. -Toronto quotes No. 1 Baldwins at $7.0O8 a barrel. BARLEY STORAGE SPACE IS FELL Strong Premiums Bid for Wheat for Ship ment Eat. Full premiums were quoted in the wheat market yesterday for grain to be shipped east. In the coarse grain market trading was dull. Dealers have ceased to bid on bar ley for lack of storage space. Corn bids at the exchange were 25 30c lower and there was a similar decline In oats. Weather condition In the middle wfrjrt. as wired from Chicago: "Cloudy and cold all over except western Missouri and east ern Kansas and Omaha district and Ken tucky, which are clear and cold." Broomhall catoles as to corn and oats prospects in the United Kingdom: "Pros pects for future supplies of corn in the United Kingdom continue to improve. The royal commission states that there are 28.000,000 bushels of Argentine corn bought but still remaining unshipped Xrom the southern grower. Leading firms here state . that if all this corn is coming to this country, as is expected, this supply, to gether with the offerings of free traders, will be sufficient to satisfy the demand, at the present rate of consumption, for 28 weeks. Many steamers have been char tered to carry grain from Argentina to the United Kingdom during January. Febru ary and March. The consumptive inquiry for oats has quieted down and sellers are offering at concessionary prices in order to effect sales. Freer offerings of plate sorts are in evidence." FIVE-CENT DECINE IN BUTTER Prints Will Sell at 61 Cents. -Box Basis, Monday. The print butter market will be 5 cents lower Monday, in spite of a steady shrink age or receipts, the market has been creasing in weakness. The falling off in consumption la variously attributed to high i ana a larger use or oleomargarine. Extreme weakness in the north was also a tactor in depressing values here. Prints on Monday will be quoted at 8 aents, plain wrapped, in box lots, and car. ns at 63 cents. The buying price of but Tcnai win De reduced 6 cents to 61C2 cents at stations. In view of ths asming decline, there was no demand for cubes yesterday. Extras wars ejnoted nominal at 60 cents. The new wholesale quotations will mean a retail selling price of 70 cents, and it. is hoped this will stimulate local consump tion. HIC.HF.R EGG PRICES ARE IN SIGHT Various Factors Tend ta Lift Va'nes is Local Market. Ths agg market was firm. -Sales of fresh ranch were made at 61 cents case count, and candled ock was quoted at 8r5 centa Selects sold at 68070 cents and one firm will advance its pries on ssiacls Monday to 71 centa. Oregon I tor- age sold at 4 cents. A 2-cent advance In the cash buying price of fresh ranch will go into effect Monday. Egg receipts have been light for some time past and there has also been Inquiry on the market from the outside. With Chinese and other for eign eggs on the market, dealers are naturally not averse to seeing the level of egg values raised. Arrivals of poultry and dressed . meats were small and price in both lines were firm. PRICES WILL BE MAINTAINED Imports and Government Sales) Do Not Af fect Wheat or floor. It is becoming increasingly clear that the wheat market and, consequently, the lev I" of flour prices, is not likely ts bo broken by either imports from Canada or sales of wheat and flour by the grain corporation, says the Northwestern Miller. Canada's export plans have apparently not as yet been formulated, but the sudden Increase in Canadian prices s week ago and the admittedly small amount of spring wheat and spring-wheat flour available for export have combined to show that the Influence on domestic prices of what ever shipments may be made will be very slight. As for the grain corporation's selling campaign, the chances are that the Im mense consumptive, demand will absorb everything that is offered, without reduc ing the call for flour at current prices through the ordinary commercial channels. FOUR CARS POTATOES TO STOCKTON Local Marks - Is Firm With No Fresh Arrivals. There was a firm local market for po tatoes without change In price. The best Oregon Burbanks were quoted by Job bers at $4.504.75 and second-grade at $3.7504.25. Yakima Gems were held at 4.BO5. Four cars of Oregon potatoes were shipped Friday to Stockton. There were no arrivals on the local market yes terday. Idaho Falls, Idaho, wired: "Practically no hauling on account of weather. Cash to growers, no sales reported. Buyers offer ing. NEW YORK. Jan. IS. The week in the stock market ended very much as it be gan. Interest continuing to concentrate In the more speoulative shares. Early gains of one to nearly four points, registered by steels, equipments, motors ahd some of the oils, shippings, metals and prominent specialties. Including American Woolen, helped the movement along at similar gains. All advances were forfeited in the final dealings, however, the whole reacting sharply under lead of the oils. Sales amounted to 435,000 shares. Rumors of a revolution in Germany, with its possible effects on the Versailles treaty, gave the shorts a pretext for re newing their recent aggressions. An unusually large increase of unfilled orders was reported by the United States Steel corporation for December. The clearing bouse statement for the first full week of the new year was note-w-orthy for a decrease of slightly more than $57,000,000 in actual reserves, re sulting In another deficit of $2,912,680. Liberty bonds were heavy, foreign issues irregular and most domestic rails and in dustrials featureless. Total sales, par val ue, aggregated $7,200,000.
