There is 3Ji inches more room in front, upholstery is better, the car has a more slanting windshield and sets closer to the ground. - . . special baggage cars, as has been their invariable fate in past years, the high-priced, specially-built, newly-perfected models, the' last word in automobile production this year will have to rest content to move by ordi nary freight cars. Five and six and seven and even ten thousand-dollar cars, with full jeweled chassis and the best body work that skill and labor can pro duce, must swallow their "pride, figur atively speaking, and climb aboard a common freight car and by slow stages, giving way all along the line to mere passenger trains and fast baggage, make their way to New York. Aside from this shock to their pride, however, automobile experts agree that the show cars will be none the worse for their plebeian experience. None have refused to make the jour ney. Althowgh definite figures are not yet on hand, it is estimated that from 25 to 30 cars will make up the train which Detroit manufacturers are ar ranging. . TVew Axle Company. Alfred Reeves, general manager of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, was in Detroit on a good roads mission a week. ago. He said that there was every indication that the national passenger car and motor truck shows would be the most suc cessful ever known. The Eaton Axle company of Cleve land was organized by a group of strong and well-known financial in terests and incorporated under Ohio laws last week, with approximate capital of ? 5,000,000. The first factory unit will be'completed soon, and will be marketing its product by June, 1920. V. V. Torbensen. inventor of the Torbensen axle and one of the found ers of the Torbensen Axle company and chief engineer of the Eaton Axle company, and J. C. Eaton, formerly president of the Torbensen Axle com pany, are president and general man ager of the new concern. The Saxon Motor Car corporation in Its statement' for the ten months ended October 21 shows a liquidation loss of $142,157. Sales were $3,464,493, and cost of sales $3,558,444, a loss of $93,961. Other income was $73,320, reducing loss on sales to $20.631, -to which Is added other expenses aggregating $21,868, or $42,499. Interest on deferred obligations were $99,689. resulting in a, liquidation loss of $142,157. Saxon Balance Sheet. The company's financial statement, as of November 1, after giving effect of new capital and settlement of creditor's claims, shows as follows: Assets: Cash. $1,230,038; notes and accounts receivable, $265,937; mer chandise, inventories. $735,984; con tingent claim materials. $200,000 pre paid expenses. $54,027; machinery, trucks and equipment, $61,237; good will, $4,567,229. Total, $7,103,410. Liabilities: Accounts payrolls and taxes payable. $92,405; contingent claim materials. $200,000; preferred etock .(par $100). $1,250,000; common stock, 200,000 shares issued at $5 per share, $1,000,000; surplus, $4,561,011. Total. $7,103,410. Stockholders of the Harroun Motors corporation will be asked to author ize the Issuance of $1,250,000 7per cent secured notes, or bonds, payable in five years, at a meeting to be held December 27. It is said the capital stock may be increased from $10,000, 000 to $12,750,000. of which $2,500,000 will be 7 per cent cumulative stock preferred. The question of changing the name of -the company to the Wayne Motors corporation will also be brought before the meeting. ry-as-ou-Levf Groceries. Lockwood Mfg. company 'of Sagi naw, recently organised with a capi tal of $100,000, will mount store bodies on its two-ton motor trucks, provid ing a complete "grocery on wheels." Orders are said to have been booked for 200 of these outfits from persons and firms who expect to engage In the old-fashioned "huckster" business in an up-tp-date manner. The mounted establishments will be of pay-as-you-leave design, the house wife, entering at one door, picking from the racks what she wishes, and paying for the goods on the way out. The Mercer Motors company will, with the approval of its board of di rectors, acquire a substantial block of stock in the new Locomobile com pany and will take an option to pur chase 100,000 shares of common stock at $35 a share, making Mercer Motors ta largest individual holder of Loco or varnish have low or very erratic strength. This has been thoroughly demonstrated by a recent test at the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis. The greatest strength value ob tained was 1712 pounds per square inch, which is low for casein glue. The other values .were 1900 pounds per square inch or less. It is evident, therefore, that all shellac or varnish should be carefully cleaned from wood which Is to be gfued if- high strength is desired. OIL YELLOWSTONE ROUTE MOVE FOR BETTER ROADS BE- 9 - GCX AT SALT LAKE. Project . Contemplates Making Yel lowstone Park Highway Both Bust and Mud-Proof. SALT LAKE, Jan. 3. Soo after the first of the ar the project for grad ing and oiling the roads between Salt Lake and Yellowstone Park will be taken up in a systematic way. The plan for improvement con templates the' grading of the roads, surfacing throughout and the appli cation of special road oil. According to persons familiar with the oiling of roads, this treatment makes them virtually mudproof, dustproof and rut proof. After the surface is prepared, the oil is forced into the ground under great pressure in the form of vapor, which insures a thorough treatment for many inches beneath the surface. Under oil treatment the earth be comes soft, pliable and clings to gether under heavy weight, springing back into place after a heavy vehicle parses over it. The plaqwlll be taken up by com mercial clubs, garage men and the city and county officials in the vari ous communities along the route. It is estimated by engineers that the cost of tho oil, freight and applica tion, will .run from $100 to $125 a mile. Touring authorities estimate that that already heavy tourist traffic to the Tellowstone from Salt Lake will be doubled next year if the roads are put in good condition before the sea son opens. Then you have the additional expenditure of time for inflating the tire and that is often a difficult Job In, itself. Xew Idea Developed. . "Recently the Firestone Steel Prod ucts company, realizing what this ob stacle meant to the working effi ciency of motor trucks, developed an entirely new' idea in steel wheel de Sign, to accommodate Firestone -demountable rims. "With this combination it is pos sible for one man to remove the largest tire and apply an inflated 'spare' in five minutes even less time than that. And it doesn't take an experienced man to turn the trick, either. "The other day at Macon, Ga., six society girls members of the Red Cross motor corps none of whom had ever laid a finger on a truck tire before participated in a tire char.ging contest staged by the man ager of our "Ship by Truck" fleet. These Giant pneumatics were 40x8 in size. The winning team made the change in less than five minutes. The process is very simple. After jack ing up your truck so the weight is off the tire, you turn the wheel so the slot In the felloe will be at the bottom. After removing the clamps and wedge ring, pull the tire away from Ihe wheel. No lifting Is neces sary. Lifting? I Vnnecesaary. "Now to apply inflated spare tire, turn wheel so that slot in felloe will be at the bottom. Roll the inflated tire and rim to the wheel, engaging the valve stem in the felloe slot. Then push rim on wheel, turning' the wheel slightly, which will lift the rim and tire from the ground. Push rim back on wheel and apply wedge ring and clamps. Again no lifting necessary. Slot in felloe is covered to prevent water and mud from get ting In around the valve stem. "This Is not only one of the most important developments in connec tion with pneumatic tires for trucks, but a irmtter of particular impor tance to the 'Ship by Truck' move ment, and all truck operators doing long-distance hauling. According to 4Ir. faparKS, me r ire stnne Steel Products company takes Just as much pride in this new steel wheel design as in its famous de mountable rim, which was the first practical quick-detachable demount able rim, a notable contribution to the working efficiency of the auto mobile. However, he said that the Fire stone Steel Products company has no indention either of manufacturing or selling wheels, simply having devel oped thla design to meet the needs of the situation. 1 ne company nas passed Information to all wheel man ufacturers which will enable the wheel-maker to construct his stand ard wheels so as to incorporate the Firestone idea. Six of the biggest steel wheel manufacturers in the country are using tho design. Felt Hat Filter. The truck owner who HleB reason able economy may be glad of a way to filter oil so that it will do double duty. An old felt hat is tne principal part of the filter. Felt filters oil ex cellently, though slowly.
