Averill. head of the A. K. Averill Machinery Company, which la engaged In the manufacture and distribution of heavy engines, boilers and sawmill and threshing machinery. Mr. Averill's ftrst car was a Winton. purchased back In 1905. the year of the Lewis and Clark Exoooition. Prior to making the purchase of his present car, a 1917 Velie. of which he is Justly troud, Mr. Averill owned a number of cars of various degree and pedigree. Per haps he could recall their names If he would, but he admits they didn't give htm as much satisfaction as his Win ton and Velie, and. he therefore elects to forget them entirely, he says. Mr. Averill served two terms a few years ago is president of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and is now a member of the Commission of Public Docks. Because he has . long been in the habit of devoting considerable time to civic and public welfare as well as to the exacting duties of his private business, Mr. Averill has not been privileged to make many long auto mobile tours, but he uses his Velie Almost dally and his off days come only when Mrs. Averill expresses a desire to use the car herself. The Averills have a Summer home along the banks of the Salmon River, above Tawney's resort, and the family car is employed frequently each season making trips back and forth over the Mount Hood road. Recently Mr. Aver ill accompanied the Portland automo bile dealers on their business trip across the state and to Crater Lake. VISITORS ARE MANY Goodyear Demonstrations At tract 100 Dealers. Mr, Quine and Mr. Griffin showed many il lustrations that were of great educa tional value to the Goodyear men. In addition to the 100 tire dealers who were invited to the service sta tion meetings on Thursday by J. A, Leatherman, manager of the Portland branch of the Goodyear Tire St Rubber Company, the shoe merchants of the city -were present "Wednesday to hear talks on the Neolin waterproof sole m terial now being manufactured by the Goodyear factory. I The big delegation of Goodyear men were not alone in contributing to liveli ness last week, for a large number of other visitors were here. Dealers in th Harley-Davidson motorbike from even states gathered in Portland in district conference and discussed prob lems akin to their trade. A K. Barker, a factory executive In the sales department of the Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company, visited H. M. Covey and Jack Crittenden on Vpper Washington street and enjoyed the Columbia River Highway trip as the guest of Mr. Covey. A. W. McKenzie. factory representa tive of the Garford truck was visiting his company representatives in Port land. Jake Hirsch. the Coast manager for the Hal car. came along to close the agency deal with the Western Mo tor Car Sales Company, and H. C. Brad ford, advertising manager of the King Motor Car Company, was here on a etill hunt for the King agents he has heard of from the factory. Oh. yes, and H. C. Harris, of the Reo Motor Car Company, one of the best liked chaps who ever skipped along motor row, was also in Portland last week. Announcement was made last week by the Eureka Oil Company that it has completed arrangements to buy out the wholesale oil and grease business of the Motor Car Supply Company. Inc. together with its stock of oil and greases. Iceland J. Sparks, ' manager of the Portland branch of the Firestone Tire A. Rubber Company, and F. C. Atweil. Portland representative for the Inter national Motor Company, makers of the Mack and Saurer trucks, were back at their desks last week following trips to San Francisco, where they were called lor district conferences. Baker Secretary of War in a letter to the Elgin Motor Car Cor poration has expressed his Interest in the results of the road investigations betns; conducted by Roy S. Marsh and Edward M. Lawrence who are In charge of the Elgjin "Six" National All Trails scout car now engaged in a 12-000-mile trip over the Lincoln Highway the Na tional Old Trails road and the Dixie Highway. In his letter Secretary Baker states that "a general discussion of the char acter of the roads in various sections of the country upon the completion of the journey would be very useful and would be appreciated by the department." Train, of Machines Are Belns Sent to Pacific Coast, Bat Shortage Has Delayed Supply Somnrbat R. F. Thompson, general raanirer of the Howard Auto Company, Pacific Coast distributors of Bulck Valve-m- Head motor cars, paid Portland an other hurried visit last week. This time he was on his way to the Bulck fac tory, visiting first each of the Howard Auto Company branches to get at first hand exact information covering the requirements for the coming season, which promises to be the biggest in the history of the company. Local conditions clearly prove to him that a greatly Increased allotment would ha"ve to be given Oregon to take care of the increasing demand and he personally assured the local manager, George W. Dean, that he would use his best efforts to obtain the needed cars. Mr. Thompson also stated that few people realize the present conditions in the Bast and that there is still a great shortage of freight equipment. The Buick Motor Company is now using several trains of gondolas, or eoal cars, as they are commonly known, and are shipping automobiles in them as far West as the Pacific Coast, two such train loads having been shipped this month both to Salt Lake and to San Francisco. It is expected, however, that these cars will not have to be sent to Portland. On previous visits Mr. Thompson has always been so pressed for time that he could not be prevailed upon to visit the Columbia Highway, but Mr. Dean finally prevailed upon him to make the drive to the end of the pavement, the day being fittingly finished by an en joyable dinner at Crown Point Chalet, from which point they witnessed one of Columbia's surpassing sunsets. - - Mr. Thompson was so impressed with the grandeur of the scenery and the water falls that before leaving Crown Point he was planning a return trip when he could take a full day for it, remarking to Mrs. Thompson, "If we only had a place like this close to San Francisco." Chalmers Man Resigns. W. J. Drumpelman, formerly assist ant salesmanager of the Chalmers Motor Company, has resigned to Join the Elgin Motor Car Corporation, of Chicago, as assistant general manager, according to announcement just made by C. S. Rieman. vice-president and general manager of the Elgin. Plans are under consideration for the erection of an electric lighting plant capable of providing 5000 private lamps, 700 public lamps and 1000 fans in the city of Madura, India. American sup plies will find a good market if these plans are carried out.
