LOVELAND WILL PREACH FAREWELL SERMON TONIGHT He Makes Final Appearance in His Old Pulpit at First Methodist Church and Leaves Soon for Indianapolis Reception Tomorrow Night at St. Stephens Parish House Honoring Rev. E. H. McCollister. DR. FRANK L. LOVELAND will preach' his farewell sermon to night as pastor of the First Meth odist Church. This announcement will be sufficient assurance that there will be a large congregation for Dr. Love land has been one of the most popular speakers and pulpit orators that has ever been in Portland. His Sunday night attendances have taxed the ca pacity of, the auditorium on nearer all occasions. It will be with great regret that his many friends will bid him goodbye. He will leave soon to take up his work in one of the important cnurcnes or the country, the Meridian Street Methodist Church at Indlanap olis. to which he has been honored with an appointment. JJr. Lo eland has been termed one of the greatest preachers of the. day." Dr. Joshua Stansfield, of Indianapolis, will succeed him. An event of interest will be the re ception on Tuesday night in compli ment to Dr. and Mrs. Loveland. A large attendance is anticipated. It will be held in the Sunday School and Social Service Temple at Twelfth and Taylor streets. Another event of importance this week will be the reception to be given tomorrow night in St. Stephen's Parish House, Thirteenth and Clay streets, honoring the new dean of the pro Cathedral, the Rev. E. H. McCollister. and his wife, who will be welcomed by the clergy of the city and by the parish members. Mrs. E. T. C. Stevens and Mrs. N. A. Colman, presidents respect ively of the Guild and the Auxiliary, will receive the guests. The Chapter will assist. " Rev. Gecrse Edward . Lewis, pastor of Highland Congregational Church, of this city, gave the young men of his church a genuine "sourdough supper" on Monday night. He was assisted by a dozen of the fathers of the young men. Just as the repast was drawing to a close Mrs. Lewis entered the church, followed by about 50 of, the mothers, wives and sweethearts. The surprise was complete. For a moment the host was stunned, but, in true back woods fashion, the 50-odd fellows arose from the banquet board and gave their places to the women, who ate Just as heartily as the men did of the crude backwoods viands. The bill of fare was novel, but easily Interpreted by all "sourdoughs." It was as follows: Banakes, and slippery, greasy and sweet. Black piledrfver and glacier water. New Orleans tugg. . Alaska strawberries. Big- horn marrow. Arctio bugu. Sacred seals. Devil chasers. Rev. Mr. Lewis, whose pen name and also who is widely known in Alaska as "Alaska Blacklock," has traversed the wilds extensively and after the ban quet he gave a very interesting lecture on the land north of the Yukon, the games and the people. He was dressed in the native costume of the country and the whole affair was realistic. Every member who attended went home enthusiastic and the boys and young men were highly elated. The Congregational ministers' sons of the entire city were invited. New Thought Worker Is to Hold Classes. Melra J. Merrill to Spend Several Dy In Portland, Arriving From Congrcu In Chicago. MELVA J. MERRILL, for many years associated with Mrs. Annie Rix Militz in the work of the "Master Mind Magazine" and also as leader of the Los Angeles Home of Truth, will arrive in Portland Friday on her way south from Chicago, where she was one of the speakers of the second International New Thought Congress. Mrs. Merrill will remain in Portland for eight days, giving lectures and class work in -"The Comforter" headquarters, "Women's Ex change building, 186 Fifth street. She will give a report of the Congressews Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, the topic of her address being "What the New Message Means to Me." She will speak again in the evening at 8 o'clock, her topic being "The Living Prayer." During the week Mrs. Merrill will hold classes, alternating afternoon and evening, the dates and topics being as follows: Sunday. October 8, 8 P. M., "The Living Prayer": Monday evening. October 9, 8 P. M., "First Principles of Truth"; Tuesday afternoon, October 10. 3 P. M-, "The Real and the Unreal"; Wednesday evening, October 11, 8 P. M., "Love and Forgiveness"; Sun day morning, October 15f 11 A. M., "Se renity of Soul": Sunday evening, Octo ber 15. 8 P. M.. "Divine Guidance." These lectures' are open to all. In line with the policy heretofore followed of having open discussions upon questions of present-day moment, the Young Men's Forum of the First Methodist Episcopal Church will hear Dr. Joseph K. Hart, recently secured as instructor at Reed College, upon "The Rise of the Modern Social Movement in the Church." Dr. Hart is -a thorough and ardent student of social, political and economic problems, an optimist, and has the abil ity to-v4ffer constructive criticism as well as destructive criticism. He will answer the questions, "What is science going to do with religion?" "What is religion going to do with science?" and "Can the religious Institutions be saved, from complete defeat?" This is the first in a series of three talks to be given by Dr. Hart to the Young Men's Forum, all talks bearing upon the same questions. The meet ing is held in the new temple of the First Methodist Church at Twelfth and. Taylor streets at 12:15 today. The public is invited. Piedmont Presbyterian Church has had a busy week. All the organiza tions are starting the Winter's work with enthusiasm. The Christian En deavor haS'taken on newlife with the advent of a large number new work ers and new members. A social serv ice study and discussion class has been organized to meet for half an hour at the close of the morning service, led by the pastor. New teachers have ap peared in the Sunday school and a fort nightly Bible Club may be one .of the results of the campaign. Sunday morn ing Dr. A. L. Hutchison, the pastor, will speak on the subject, "Sending Re grets to God." In the evening his topic will be. "A Great Wrestling Match." The large chorus choir, under the leadership of Will Robinson, has start ', ed out in fine shape. Bishop Hughes has appointed Rev. B. H. Morse, recently from the East, to the pastorate of Lincoln Methodist Church, of this city. Mr. Morse is a man of fine address and attainments, a good preacher with a splendid knowledge of the Bible and will attract ' the public with his fine presence and oratory. The Rev. C. Bertram Runnales will preach at St. David's Church today, at 11 A. M. and 7:30 P. M. His subjects will be "The Basic Cause of Worry," In the morning and "The Fundamental Cure for Worry." at night. Phipps, general secretary of the Ore gon State Sunday School Association, are in charge of the conference. Chair man of the various committees are: Publicity. The programme will be handled mainly by boys between the ages. of 15 and who will discuss topics of interest to boys' organizations. A picnic spread and stunts have been planned for Saturday night by a com mittee, of which Lelaine West is chair man. Both conferences will be held under the direction of the Multnomah County Sunday School Association. First Congregational to Ob serve Rally Day. A DAY of unusual significance of the church year in the First Congre gational Church will be observed to day, when "rally day" will be observed and when there will be something more than the conventional presentation of the event in the Bible school at 9:50 A. M. The exercises at that hour will be of an unique character. At MA- 1 the rally of all the members and their friends will take place in the . audi torium of the church. "Dr. Luther" R. Dyott's theme at this time will be "The Touch of God." At 6:30 P. M. the Y. P. S. C. E. will hold a meeting of a public character, and what is said will be in keeping with the day. The crowning service of the day will be held in the auditorium of the church at 7:45 P. M.. when a consideration of the theme, "Prosperity and Success in Portland," will be presented by " Dr; Dyott. - The First Congregational Church, In believing in applied Chris tianity, links itself with all the in stitutions and enterprises in Portland. There will be an address by Judge Arthur Langguth next Thursday night in the prayer meeting. The six wom en's organizations of this church, as well as the men's organizations, are endeavoring to keep in touch with the various institutions contemplating the welfare of Portland. v Special services will be observed to day in the Sunday school of the First Free Methodist Church, East Ninth and East Mill streets. Superintendent Lee eon and those associated with him, have a splendid programme prepared. Thif consists of special songs, readings and recitations under the different depart ments. The pastor. Rev. Alexander Beers, will preach a special sermon taking for his subject "The Illuminated Face the Reflection of Christianity." At 2 o'clock a memorial service will be held in memory of Miss Eunice1 Ran-; dall who died last week. Miss Randall was one of the most efficient and dear ly beloved members among the. young people. .The pastor will deliver the ad dress. At 7:30 P. M. Mrs. Beers will conduct a young people's meeting, open to all. The pat. tor will preach again at night. The evening service will be evange listic in nature. Donald L. MacPhee will sing a solo at each of these serv ices. This is the last Sunday . that the pastor will preach until he returns from a trip to Chicago, where he goes to attend the executive meeting of the denomination, of which he is a mem ber, also the meeting of the Board of Education, of which he is the vice president. - Roman Catholic Priests Are Transferred. Archbishop Christie Announces Num ber of Appointment. A RCHBISHOP A. CHRISTIE, of Ore CjL gon, has announced a number of appointments that will be of interest to many and especially to the parish ioners where the appointments are made. Rev. Charles Smith, pastor of St. Clement's parish, St. Johns, will be transferred to the Cathedral parieh. Rev. Ignatius McXamee, of Cathedral parish, will be pastor at McMinnville. Rev. F. W. Black, of McMinnville, to be pastor of Blessed Sacrament parish. Father Smith was formerly pastor of Corvallis, but for about two years he was in charge of St. John's. That charge ha now been taken over by the Redemptorist Fathers, with the Rev. J. Chapotor as pastor and Father Neelon as assistant. . Rev. F. W. Black, who was formerly assistant to Father Daly, of Immacu late Heart parish, has been in McMinn ville for about a year. Rev. Ignatius McNanee has been as sistant pastor at Cathedral parish since his ordination three years ago. ... East Side Baptist Sunday school gave a social Friday evening, at which many of the young , people were present. Classes in training for Sunday school teaching will begin today, with Mrs. Bagley in charge. The following is the result of the election which was held: A. B. Bennett, superintendent; Miss Nellie Boulette, secretary; Leslie Warren, pianist; J. W. McMichael, chorister. The wise advice and cheerful pres ence of Dr. J. W. McDougall will be missed here, but his friends are re joicing that the appointment he re ceived is an excellent one and St. Paul's.-of Spokane, is a church that is considered one of the important charges in the West. Danenhower will direct. Christian Endeavorers to Have Expert Classes. City Divided Into Seven Districts for Series of Instructions. RING October there will be an ex pert class organized in many of the Christian Endeavor Societies of the state. All Christian Endeavor organi sations, either local or union, will re ceive plans for the successful conduct of classes. In some cities they will be carried on in a central class, when a number of societieu will be partak ing of the one class. Elsewhere it may be that each society will be able to have a class of its own. In Portland, instead of having the central class for all the societies, it has been arranged to have eeven district classes. In this way the distance in many cases will be shortened. ' The efficiency department is one of the most important features of the great "campaign for millions." Ore gon's thare in this world-wide move ment is to procure 300 expert Endeav orers. One hundred and fifty experts have been graduated; there arc still 150 more to be graduated during the next nine months left of the campaign. The book used in this connection is the textbook "Expert Endeavor," writ ten by Amos R. Wells. The third Christian Endeavor rally for Presbyterian young people will take place in the First Presbyterian, Church Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. Dr. J. W. McMichael will lead the sing ing. Kurd Warren, and is expected to mean large things in the life of the young people of the community, especially those who are without homes. The changes that were made at the recent conference at Lebanon were satisfactory to the pastors, how ever, and every act of the conference and of the bishop has met with the undivided support and confidence of the church people.
