OCEAN LAKE. Or.. Aug. 12. (Spe
cial One of the largest and most sue
cessful bonfires and beach dances of
the season was given Monday night by
the residents of the Golden Glow Camp.
About 100 persons were present and
coffee and sandwiches were served
after an enjoyable programme of
stunts ana takeoffs by the performers.
Mrs. Steiner and daughters, of Port
land, are in the Porter cottage.
Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Doyle and son,
Billie, and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Jones,
of Portland, have taken the Leslie cot
tage, "Blarney Castle," for the season.
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Gardner and Mrs.
X. J. Buford, of Salem, and Mrs. D. S.
Rabb. of Portland, have taken the
Cressman cottage.
Scott Bozorth was host at a big
bonfire last Saturday evening, when
about 75 visitors from the neighbor
hood gathered around the blaze and
enjoyed games, music and refresh
ments. Corn-popping was a feature.
In Dr. Swain's cottage for August

HIKES AN'D AQUATICS DELIGHT
Bayocean Beach Is Scene of Varied
Summer Season Gayeties.
BAYOCEAN, Or.. Aug. 12. (Spe
cial.) One of the most important
events during the week here was the
hiking expedition arranged by George
W. Kelly, of the Natatorium staff. Led
by this able guide, a party of 24 made
the trip to Tillamook, via Netarts and
Short Beach, a distance of 22 miles. A
cheese factory was visited and a gen
eral tour of the surrounding district
made while on the trip. Those to
make the trip were the Misses Leah
Ganzmiller, Esther Hawkins, Irene
Vanlandingham, Irene and Violet
Rader, Ieliene Meagher, Jessie Hikok,
and Marjorie Pearson, and the Mes
dames J. S. Ready. M. Hikok, Lou Giv-
ens, V. F. Wood and Fred Austin, Mr.
and Mrs. J. H. Keeney and Kenneth
Keeney, Rev. B. A. Warren and son.

Carl O. -Shagren, who Is quartered

At a 500 party at the Bayocean Ho
tel last Monday evening, the guests of
the house had a pleasant time. Home
made candy and refreshments were
served and chorus singing indulged in.

C. Newcastle and Charles C. Newcastle,
Jr. The trip to the caves and Short
Beach was made and a picnic lunch
spread near the lighthouse.
One of the merriest bevy of young
ladies to arrive here this season came
in during the week, and encamped at
the Adamless Eden quarters. Miss
Clara Bracher is chaperone, and the
other members of the party of the
Misses Dorothy Peterson, Irma
Scharpf, Lorraine Mahony, Annabelle
Crawford and Margaret Mahoney, all
of Portland. They will remain here
for two weeks.
Hal Dickson, of Gresham, was visit
ing here during the week.
In an auto party that came in dur
ing the week and put up at the Bay
ocean Hotel were: Mrs. J. C. Olds.
Miss Edith Olds and Mrs. Robert
Tucker and Harland Tucker, of Port
land. Mrs. C. H. Withers and Mrs. Charles
Campbell, who are located at Manhat
tan, were visiting here recently.
Omur Moore, of Gaston, was among
the arrivals on the launch Henrietta
during the week.
S. B. Vincent was In Portland for a

FURNITURE MEN.
An event of Buvers' week that rurniture men who- participated will not soon forget was the trip provided for them over the Columbia River Highway last Thursday. They left the Portland
Hotel at 12:15 and returned at 7 o'clock. During the entire day they were guests of F. S. Doernbecher. well-known furniture manufacturer of this city. The trip Included luncheon at
o'clock at Crown Point Chalet, after which the party drove on to Multnomah Falls. Upon their return the visitors were given a banquet at the Portland Hotel, which was followed by a varied
entertainment of vaudeville numbers. Many ut'-of 'own b-iyers who bad not seen the highway declared it was the trip of their llvaa. . .

Senator Will Join Wife at Oregon

ELMORE PARK, Or., Aug. 12. (Spe
cial.) Mrs. W. E. Borah, of Boise,
Ida., wife of Senator Borah, and her
mother. Mrs. W. J. McConnell, of
Moscow, Ida., wife of ex-Governor Mc
Connell, of the state of Idaho, passed
two days at the Hotel Elmore. Mrs.
Borah made -arrangements for an ex
tended stay here upon the arrival of
the Senator from Washington, D. C.
He Is expected to reach the coast In
the party of the Republican nominee
for President, Charles E. Hughes. '
Senator Borah's visit will extend
into mid-September.

beach here has become all the rage. A
phonograph placed furnishes the orch
estral strains of the fox trot, bunny
hug two-step and the Idella sand
glide. The latter record was composed
by the young ladles of the Idella Cot
tage. Helen Sutherland, Lena Schulz
and Louise Teesdale, who are chaper
oned by Mrs. John I. Teesdale, of
Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. H..A. Swafford. of Ore
gon City, are occupying the Evergreen
Cottage.

The selection of a site for picnics
and camping grounds for large organ
izations to hold their annual outings
at the beach has been settled. The El-more-Saltatr
Improvement Club nas
arranged for three acres bordering
Clear Lake, between Elmore Park and
Saltair Beach resorts and the work of
beauiliytng the ground will be cor
menced after the close of the present
season. The lake Is to be dredged
and a 30-foot walk built around the
north side, a large wooden swimming
tank, with sandy bottom, is to be
moored to. the dock. The erection of
a large garage is also contemplated.

Twinkling brightly along the beach
each evening one sees dozens of bon
fires. From a distance the scene re
minds one of an encampment of troops,
for the super-abundance of driftwood
invites the building of many piles.
Saltair Beach is the most popular along
the whole resort section In this vicinity
for the bonfires, and the many merry
parties that are arranged for them are
a delightful means of passing the Sum
mer evenings. Informal programmes
of music and stunts are generally held
and the usual finale of outdoor
is always in order.
Among the recent social events de
vised to include the pleusures of the
beach was the bonfire party given by
Mrs. A. F. Kelly In honor of Mrs. K. J.
Richards. The fire was an exception
ally large one. and after musical num
bers and vaudeville acts by the guests,
refreshments were served. Mrs. Rich
ards is a guest at the Cottage Con-

Diversified amusements have been
offered the vacationists here during
the past week. The good weather is
bringing out the fishermen in great
number, and some fine strings of trout
result irom their efforts. Several
streams are within easy access of Hock-

find plenty of pleasure in dancing on
the board walk in front of the Sugar

family here for a month, consented to
speak, and a large number of people
were present to hear him. The church
has recently installed a new organ and
the services have been improved by the
