With the prevailing Sum mer -weather, the crowds are beginning- to arrive, and the local atmos phere is livening- up to Its usual stand ard. The cottag-ers here are enjoying their outings, and the many informal Kod times that are held quite frequent ly at the various dwellings and at the Tavern are instrumental in bringing to gether the various visitors. A motoring party from Portland In the oarly part of the week included Mrs. V. A. Sanderson, Jliss Camille Dos h and Mr. W. N. Sanderson, -who remained several days at the Tavern. Lunching- at the Tavern on Wednes day with Mrs. A. C. U. Berry, of.Miaml, ' -were Mm. Russell Hawkins- Miss Margaret Hawkins and Russell Haw kin. Jr.. Miss Kipa Berry, Miss tiallie Ii.irt und Robert Berry. Hikers over the trail on Friday were Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Kelly, jvho wallapd ever from their Cannon Beach cottage. Mr. and Mrs. Alma 1). Katz and nephew. John Katz Wells, motored in from Portland last Sunday with Dr. Otis B. Wricrht. and visited here with Mrs. F. C. Kins. Three Tillamook hikers over the trail luring the week were the Misses Theresa. Ethel and Beatrice Gaylord. The young-ladios walked over to Arch Cape and returned. , Mr. and Mrs. John P. "Whitlock were Kueats here at the cottage of A. E. Doyle and wife, and returned -with Mr. Doyle by auto to Portland Sunday. J. Harold Miner joined friends at the Tavern for the last week end. Mrs. J. C. Macy and Miss Micy and the Misses Mathews and Miss Hatton. of Portland, are occupying a cottage here for a fortnight. Dr. W. A. dimming motored in from Portland on Saturday nnd spent the week prd at the Tavern. With him v ere Miss Harriette Cumming, Mrs. William Wretzel, of Salt Lake City. Utah, and Stuart Freeman, of Portland. C. H. Lewis, with Victor Johnson, Donald Green and M. H. Hartwell, mo tored in from Portland on Sunday, making the trip in seven and one-half hours. They report the road in excel lent condition. Harry Sargent spent Sunday with his family, who are in the Cadwell cottage for August. Miss Dorothy Corhett and Master Julian Coi-bett are spending the week witn the Sargent children. The art students of Henry Wentz's claiss are now sketching from models who pose in the nearby woods. The class is making good headway and Mr. Wentz is quite enthusiastic over the "Work being done. Mrs. Wyld and family, who are quar tered at the Cain Ranch House, are enjoying- some excellent sport trolling for salmon. They are having good success. Aug. 12 CSpecial.) Gearhart is assuming holiday attire and a general atmosphere of hospital ity and gaiety prevails at this quiet and fashionable resort, in anticipation or tne visitors from the various cities of the Northwest who will participate in the golf tournament, scheduled to open Monday. Never have the links looked so- invit ing or been in such excellent condition Despite the fact that there is no hotel here, the visitors will be -well cared for by the hospitalile hosts of the handsome and commodious cottages. Many of the guests reached here the latter part of the week. Large motor cars will be at the disposal of the golfers to convey them to and from their habitats, whether it be Seaside or around this section. The natatorium is in fine shape to take care of the energetic who like a plunge after their games and gaiety will reign supreme during this entire week. Supper parties have been planned by a number of the hosts and as many of the cottages are. large enough for dancing, this diversion will fill a large part of the programme for the enter tainment of the visitors. Last week many of the cottages were opened and the resort shows signs of much activity. Benefits are not' forgotten in the rush for pleasure, one of the largest and most delightful from all points being the bridge-tea for which Mrs. James Dougherty and Mrs. Chester . Murphy were hostesses on Wednesday, for the little Catholic Church in the meadow. Their cottage, one of the largest here, was attractively decked with huge clusters of huckleberry foliage and wild flowers and tables were" ar ranged for 20 guests. Mrs. Whitley, who had been Summer ing here, underwent an operation -in Portland at St. Vincent's Hospital on Thursday. As soon as she can travel, she will come down to the Kinney cot tage to recuperate. Sirs. Samuel Dlttenhoefer and children, of St. Paul, were arrivals of Thursday and will pass the rest of the Summer with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Lang, at their hand some beach home. Chester Griffin Murphy came down Thursday for a few days' visit with his family, who are domiciled for the Sum mer in the Kinney cottage. Dr. Gustav Baar passed the week-end visiting in Gearhart. as the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Friedlander. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fey were among the arrivals on Saturday afternoon and they are. guests of Mrs. Gay Lombard. Miss Laura Smith came down Satur day to visit Dr. and Mrs. James C. She Is an enthusiastic golfer and participated in many games during the week. The girls who are housed at the T". W. C. A. camp have the merriest sort of time. Every minute is occupied, either swimming, picnicking, riding horseback or driving. When they are Indoors, they are busy plying their needles In the manufacture of some fancy article, in most cases, dainty lingerie for their own use. FETE PLANS HOLD ATTENTION Attractions Promised for Everybody Next Saturday Night. SEASIDE, Or.. Aug. 13. Special.) As soon as the hundreds of Knights of Pythlaa rsachtd this resort Saturday and Sunday they scurried madly for dash into the surf. They arrived Just at high tide, and they were eager to make every minute of their brief stay count. The natatorlums were unable to supply all the eager, bathers with suits and rooms. But the visitors man aged in some way to obtain accommo dation sufheient to induce them to frolic in the waves. A band concert on the pier by the Seaside band, a clambake, motor trips to cannon Beach. Arch Cape and other interesting and picturesque spots made the trip memorable for the K of P.s. The streets of this little city were In holiday attire to greet the visitors, pennants and lights of the tri-color blue, red and yellow waving a welcome from every street, house and shop. Plans for the big fete on August IS at Hotel Moore grounds for the Salt Cairn ar claiming the entire time and attention of the association. A meet ing was held Monday night and George SI. Hyland, who is master of ceremo nies, made a satisfactory report on the various parts of the programme as signed to him. In addition to the mu Fioal programme, which will Include an address by the Mayor of Seaside, selec tions by Webb's orchestra, dancing, vocal and Instrumental numbers, there will be Interesting concessions attract ively displayed about the grounds. Huge trees will be used to Inclose the space set aside for the fete, and myri ads of lights and flowers will convert It Into a garden. Home-made candies, bouquets and souvenirs in the shape of miniature salt bags, will be used to tempt the purchasers to help Increase the fund for the erection. of a monu ment to Lewis and Clark. Motoring has become a habit with the devotees here as much as in town. The Joseph Harker Smiths are the lat est victims. They motor a great deal in town, and for the past two weeks have made trips to Portland and back, merely for the pleasure of the ride. They go one way on the Inside road and the other on the highway, and re port there Is not the slightest bit of trouble; traversing either road. H. L. Tittock. whoce family is sum mering here in Beachcroft. came down the latter part of the week in his mo tor car and passed a few days With his family. A swimming exhibition on Slonday night was a sort of farewell for the H. A. Ludwigs. who have been in charge of the instruction at the. Nata torium for a couple- of years. They left Tuesday for California, where Mr. Ludwig will resume his work at the Concordia Club for the year. He was merely loaned to the Oates Natatorium for the Summer. In addition to Mr. Ludwig. exhibitions' of fancy diving were given by the new instructors who will be here for the balance of the Summer, E. W. Shockley. of the Uni versity of Oregon, and C. W. Sexsmith. of the University of Washington. The splendid concert on Friday night at the Critic Theater by Dr. Emll Enna and Sliss Virginia Drake for the bene fit of the Slethodist Church, was one of the most artistic and successful of the season's affairs at this resort. The "Legends of Seaside," a song cycle for solo and- chorus, was. written by Dr. Enna and the lyrics by Sliss Virginia Drake. The soloists Included Mrs. Charles C.
