The erection of the monument at this time Is appropriate, 1915 beinjr the loOth anniversary of the birth of Dan il Decat ur Kmmett. who was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on October 2il, IMS. He died June 28. 1904. l.-iptrnf lorn Are A ronwed. "Dixie Land Is not Uu only song of Emniett'a composition that became popular. "Old Dan Tucker" and others of a half-century ago were products of his brain. Hia hupp)' faculty for Bonn writing Maa not the only merit to his credit. He was the originator of old-time mintrejy and was one of the four men who, in 184:!. organized the first minstrel company in history. If Emmett had ben content to fol low tbe natural bent of life that his parentage and home environments mapped out for him. he might never have been heard of outside of his own town. His father came from Ireland when the "est was an unknown wil derness. After spending pome years ad venturing in unexplored sections, he served in the American Army against the British and later settled down in Mount Vernon and established a black smith shop. Into the home in this quiet rurjl town came Baby Dannie), and during the first dozen years of his life he was content with hia lot. Then he saw a circus and that aroused the slumbering aspirations that caused him to start out, at the age of 13 years, to see what was out in the big world. Clreus Engagement Obtained. Going to Cincinnati, he secured en gagement with Stickney's cirrus as mu sician and coined v linger. He played the fiddle in tne orchestra, thrummed a banjo and sang negro melodies, most of which were his own composition. In creasing his versatile powers, he event ually added dancing and fife and drum playing to his accomplishments. One of the conditions of Kmmett's engagement with the Bryant minstrels was that h was to furnish or m mat topical and comic songs on demand and on the occasion of the birth of "Dixie 1-u.nd." Mr. Bryant had told Pun that he was to have a new song ready for rehearsal Monday morning and produc tion that evening. And "Dixie" did the turn. During his career before I iie public Mr. Emmett was at one lime and an other connected with all of the leading minstrel organizations, ent ertainin throughout this couutry and m KoiifJun, England, and his last work was two seasons with A. G. I'ield. XotwKhstnnd standing his many mutiiri I crai ionn and the constant demands for his serv ices. Mr. Kminett died a poor man.
