THE SUNDAY OREGOXIAX. PORTLAXD, OCTOBER lO, 1015. 7 PYTHNS TO GATHER HERE NEXT TUESDAY Grand Lodge of Oregon Will Hold Two-Day Session and Elect Officers. MANY DELEGATES AWAITED Ieath of Grand Keeper of Records and Seal S tin son Casts Gloom Throughout Order in State. Supreme Meet Is Planned. The Grand Lodge of Oregon, Knights of Pythias, will convene in Portland next Tuesday, October 12. in 34th an nual convention. Because of the many Important matters to be considered, this will be one of the most noteworthy conventions of the grand lodge. The grand lodge will remain in session two. and probably three, days. Almost 400 members from all sections of the state will be here to attend the sessions. There are 79 lodges in Oregon now, and all will have at least two delegates, and some from three to five each. In addition to the regular representatives, there will be several past grand chan cellors attending ana also a number of past chancellors from subordinate lodges, who are privileged to attend the session, though they are not dele gates. Mr. Stlnson'a Death Sadden. Universal sorrow among the mem bers of the order In this state over the death of Grand Keeper of Records u:.d Seal Stinson will sadden the work of the coming convention. Mr. Stinson had been the chief clerical officer of the grand lodge for 18 years. He was the most active worker in the stat-. in the cause of the order and had a wider acquaintance than any other member of the order. The choice of a successor to Mr. Stin son will be one of the principal duties confronting the members of the grand lodge. The new grand keeper of records and seal will be chosen in the annual elec tion of grand lodge officers, probably Tuesday afternoon. Frank S. Grant, a past grand chancellor of the order, has been appointed by Grand Chancellor Wrlghtman to act as grand keeper of records and seal at the coming session. Biennial Election to : Held. The biennial election of supreme rep resentatives to represent Oregon at the supreme lodge for four years will also take place at this session of the grand lodge. The retiring supreme represen tative is Marion S. Davis, of Union. The other supreme representative, whose term does not expire for two years yet, is Gus C. Moser, of Portland. The most important matter to come before the grand lodge next week is the consideration of plans for the meet ing of the Supreme Lodge, Knights of Pythias, at Portland in August, 1916. This session will bring to Portland men from all parts of the country and Can ada who are not only prominent Pythians, but who are prominent In political and business life. The Oregon Knights expect to make plans so that this gathering will be a success and redound to the credit of Portland and Oregon. At the meeting next week committees will- probably be appointed to handle th- plans of the meeting of the supreme lodge. Bank to De Conferred on Clnas. At the opening of the grand lodge next Tuesday morning the Grand Lodge Kank will be conferred upon a large class of men from all parts of the state. ! This rank is conferred upon past chan- 1 cellors of the subordinate lodges only. The annual reports of the grand lodge officers will also be received Tuesday. An encouraging feature of these re ports is that the Order of Knights of Pythias has made a net gain of 350 in this state during the past fiscal year. This gain was made i the face of the fact that many fraternal organizations and societies have suffered a loss in membership during the past year be cause oi financial depression. The great success of the convention at Crater Lake is a matter over which members of the order can comment proudly at the coming session. The ceremony of conferring the rank of Knight on a class of candidates in the crater on Wizard Island, in Crater : Lake, was prabably the most unique ceremony ever held in the world. Thirty-four Oregon lodges and nine Cali fornia lodges were repre ented at this unique gathering. Present Officers Will Preside. SUICIDE NOTE COMPLETE DR. FERGUSON'S MESSAGE INTACT, SAVS HOOD RIVER CORO.XER. Statement of Dead Man Say. That He IVas Wronged at Tne Dal lea. and Domestic A f fairs ljrt. HOOD RIVER, Or., Oct. 9. (Special.) According to Dr. V. R. Abraham, lo cal Coroner. Judge R. R. Butler, of The Dalles, attorney for the late Dr. E. E. Ferguson, whose death by suicide oc curred here Wednesday afternoon, has been resting under a misunderstanding as to a letter reported to have been ad dressed to the attorney. Believing that a portion of the letter left by the dead man had been kept from him Judge Butler interested himself Thursday in an attempt to obtain the missing por tions of the communication, accusing Dr. Abraham of either withholding the missing portions or shielding parties who had them. "I have secured signed statements from three people on the scene when I arrived," said Dr. Abraham this morn ing, "that the letter I gave Judge But ler was all the communication found on the table besid.e the dead man's bed. These persons are Mrs. C. C. Carmack, Frank Hutson and A. D. Ramsay. The former was a stranger to Dr. Fergu son. She was visiting in the neighbor hood. Mr. Hutson had been working on the physician's ranch. Mr. Ramsay is owner of a neighboring orchard place. The letter was addressed to no one." A copy of the statement left by Dr. Ferguson follows: "Some people know how unjustly and dishonestly I have been treated by Dr. Dr. J. A. Reuter, of The Dalles. Some people also know that the truth has not been told about my domestic af fairs. I cannot live without my little girl and be of any use to the world, and I cannot live with her mother as a husband. I leave, thanking all who have been kind to me and knowing that I have never knowingly wronged any man or woman." The statement was in large hand writing on two pages of a tablet. It is said by those who saw the table that other sheets had apparently been torn out, and it is thought that Dr. Fergu son, himself, may have torn up and de stroyed other communications. The note was dated October 4, the day be fore the tragedy. SILVERTON JOINS LEAGUE High School Will Participate in State Society Debates. SILVERTON', Or.. Oct. 9. (Special.) The Silverton High School has be come a member of the State Debating League, and at the first meeting will debate the question of military train ing on the Swiss plan. B. H. Conkle, principal of the high school, is in charge of the debating work. The high school in all athletic con tests is playing under the rules of the State Athletic Association and is play ing only with schools that have adopted the same standards of scholar ship. On account of the crowded condition in the Fourth and Fifth Grades, it has been found necessary to equip an ad ditional room and add a new teacher to the force. This will make 14 teachers for the grades. DOUGLAS SURVEY BEGINS County Road From Com stock to Canyon-i-ille Is Project. ROSEBURG. Or., Oct. 9. (Special.) A crew of surveyors arrived at Corn stock, in Northern Douglas County, Friday, preparatory to making a per manent survey for a county road from that point to Canyonville. The sur veyors are working under the direc tion of the State Highway Engineer's office. The new survey, if completed ac cording to present plans, will probably eliminate many of the heavy grades, dangerous curves, and railroad cross ings, which are a part of the present highway. Another crew of surveyors will ar rive at Glendale soon to survey a road from that place as far south as Wolf Creek. DISTRICT ROAD LAW HIT Roebtirg Merchants Say Incorpo rated Towns Are Menaced. ROSEBURG. Or.. Oct. 9. (Special.) At a meeting of the merchants of Roseburg held here tonight it was unanimously agreed that the present municipal road district law would prove a menace to the incorporated towns of the tate. and would greatly handicap the County Courts in improv ing the roads of the state. In Roseburg. for instance, it was pointed out that approximately $12,000 would be realized from road taxes an nually while there was less than a mile of rounty road in the district. CLASSIFIED AD.
