CITY-WEARY FOLK GATHER AT VARIOUS GAY BEACH RESORTS Festivities Occupy Time of Vacationists Called to Seashore to Revel in Surf or as Fancy Dictates Exodus for Home Begins at Meccas of Gaiety Along Coast. f A. , GEARHART. Or., Sept. 4. (Special.) Although the tournament was not as say as in previous years, the so cial side of it being- tempered for many reasons, yet the brilliant sunshine and balmy weather aroused considerable enthusiasm among the Summer visit ors surrounding Gearhart Park. Two house parties were remarkably mall for such an event, but the nui ber of motor cars, the exciting paper cnase forming part of the week's fes tivities, and the restless, surging crowas gave an atmosphere of gaiety that burst into a carnival spirit Satur day night at the huge vaudeville and lawn fete at Seaside for the salt cairn fund. All the younger folk here made up parties, and the strings of motor cars whirring along the roads from Gear hart to Seaside gave the appearance of a metropolitan function of magnitude. The John Emerson Cronans, with their children, were the first of these motor parties to reach here. They came Monday night, and are domiciled in the Marshall cottage for several weeks. Dr. and Mrs. George A. Marshall and cons, who have been summering in their cottage since June, returned home Monday. Dr. James C. Zan passed a week with his family here, and returned Sunday with his children. Mrs. Zan accom panied her brother, Russell Smith, and eisters, Mrs. Richard Scoffield. Mrs. N. K. Aver and Miss Laura Smith home in the Smith machine. Mrs. Ayer was a house guest of the Zans over the week end, and her sisters were at the hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Guy M. Standifer, who were house guests of the John Twohys for the tournament week, returned home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James D. Honeyman, Miss Helen and Billie and Ronald Honeyman, and their house guest, Mrs. C. T. Whitney, who was down for the tournament, also motored back to Port land Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Oskar E." Huber, Misses "Vi'innif red and Elizabeth Huber re turned Monday night to Portland. Miss "VVinnifred Huber is preparing to enter Dana Hall on September 9. Mrs. Kurt H. Koehler accompanied Mr. Koehler back to Portland Friday after a visit of eeveral weeks with her parents here. Mrs. E. C. Shevlin passed the week rs the guest of Mrs. Guy W. Talbot, and her son, Ned, was the guest of Teddy Wilcox during the week. Crosby Shevlin passed a couple of days in Gearhart en route to Ecola to visit friends. Misses Carrie and Louise Flanders passed Sunday at Gearhart Hotel. They are summering in their Ecola cottage at Elk Creek. Misses Jean and Barbara Mackenzie were guests of Mrs. Helen Ladd Cor bett for tournament week. Mrs. Cor bett entertained with many informal dinner parties and teas for her guests. Mrs. Frederick A. Jacobs has been visiting Mrs. Charles F. Adams for sev eral days, coming down during tourna ment week. Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose M. Cronin came down early last week and opened the Kavanaugh cottage for a fortnight. They entertained Mrs. Harper Skues, of Mend, Or., and Miss Katherine Cronin for the week. Miss Mabel Beck left about the mid dle of the week to join a house party at the Henry McGowans, who have trathered for the Astoria regatta. S. A. Volkman. L. V. Winters. Oliver Huston, Eugene Oppenheimer, Howard t'harlton and George Stanley came ilown Saturday noon to participate in the paper chase. They remained over the week-end. some of the party visit ing friends both here and at Seaside. K. F. Whitney and George P. Stanley were house gruests of Graham Glass, the former being down for the golf tourney, and the latter passing the Wfrk-end here. Harold Sooysmith, Frederick Forster mid Hamilton Corbett came down Sat urday. Mr. Sooysmith and the latter to visit Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett. and Mr. Forster to visit the T. B. Wil coses. Mr. and Mrs. William MacMaster, Mrs. I. andon R. Mason, Jr., Miss Maisie Mac Master, Mrs. Hazel B. Litt and Lieuten ant F. V. Schneider left early Sunday morning for Portland. Mr. Schneider will visit the MacMasters for several days before sailing for Honolulu, where -he will be stationed for three years. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Lewis and Mas ter Couch Lewis, who have been occupy ing the Simmonds cottage here for three months, returned to Portland Monday. They have leased the Whit jiey Hoise residence for several months. Irving Webster passed the week at Gearhart Hotel, returning to Portland Monday. Chandler Esran. well - known golfer, accompanied Charles H. Davis. Jr., on Friday night to Gearhart. and passed several days as his house guest. Mrs. Charles F. Adams and children, who have been summering in their at tractive cottage here. returned this week to Portland, accompanied bv Mrs Van Eichhaum and children, who have been visiting the Adams family for sev eral weeks. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Porter and at tractive daughter. Miss Margaret Porter, and Miss Sara Patrick passed the latter 1 art of last week and first of this week at Gearhart Hotel. Mrs. Walter M. Cook and daughters Margaret and Betty, who have been enjoying a visit of several weeks the Gearhart Hotel, returned to Port land th latter part of last week. Mrs. Harriet Bush Greer, of Peoria, 111., was the house guest of Mrs. Guy W. Talbot during the week. Mrs. C. E. S. Wood passed last week as the guest of her daughter, Mrs. David T. Honeyman, returning to Port land about the middle of this week. Mr. and Mrs. George B. Carpenter and the latter's brother, J. F. Morrell, who have been at Gearhart Hotel for a couple of weeks, left in their motor car Sunday morning for Portland, and from there will take a long motor trip before returning to their home in Med ford. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold S. Rothwell ar rived Saturday for a few days' visit at Gearhart Hotel, returning again on Monday night. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Goodman and children and her house guest. Miss Ida Lowenberg. left Saturday for their home. They have been occupying the Beckman cottage here for several weeks. Mrs. Charles Whitley, who is sum mering with her sister, Mrs. James A. Dougherty, has as a house guest her mother-in-law, Mrs. Whitley, of Salt Lake City. Mr. Whitley also passed several days here recently with his family. Mr. and Mrs. C. Edward Grelle have been visiting the "fair in San Francisco for several days, and are expeted back here at their cottage within a day or two. Mr. and Mrs. James Henry, who recently returned from California, are at the Grelle cottage with Jim amd Elizabeth Grelle. William D. Skinner was among the late arrivals last week at Gearhart Hotel. Thomas Robartson, Hawley Hofman. David T. Honeyman and James A. Dougherty were among the golf en thusiasts who passed the tournament week with their families here. j Graham Glass and son, Graham, also passed the week at their cottage here, participating in the tournament. A party of congenial friends, includ ing Mrs. R. C. Coffey, Mrs. Noble Wiley Jones, Mrs. Alexander S. Fftttullo, Mrs. H. C. Colton and Miss Thera Yocum, all of whom are sojourning in Gearhart, passed a delightful day Tuesday at Warren Hotel. Cannon Beach. A delightful affair of the latter part of last week was the lawn party for which Miss Mildred McClung and Miss Melba Peterson were hostesses. The affair was given Saturday at the Mc Clung cottage, tables being arranged on tne lawn beneath the trees for cards, and at the conclusion of the games the afternoon- was passed in dancing and partaking of delicious re freshments. The guests were Helen Woodcock, Helen Bracht, Edyth Bracht. Nellie Reidt, Alice Gadsby. Lenore McGregor, Bernice McGregor. Jennie Parelius, Florence Parelius. Lucile Murton. Mary Gill, Bessie Robinson, Stephanie Strain. Lucile McClung and Margaret Peter son. Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Wooster and daughter Helen, who have been guests or ur. Hewitt and family for a few weeks, returned a few days ago to their home in Estacada. A. L. Mills. Jr.. T. H. Mills, of Port land, and Frederick Lawrence, of Bos ton, passed a couple of days early in the week at Gearhart Hotel. Mrs. W. B. Ayer, who has been so journing at the hotel for a few weeks, returned home Thursday. Mrs. Joseph Andrews (Josephine Smith) arrived Thursday for a short visit with Mrs. David T. Honeyman. Mr. and Mrs. B. W. L. MacGregor and family returned home Tuesday, after Summering in Gearhart in the Sanborn cottage. The Guy W. Talbot family also re turned home early in the week. Miss Louise M. Heinlein. Miss Dor othy and Wade Newbegin passed a few days this week at the hotel. Miss Nadine Caswell left this morning- for Flavel to join the James D. Honeyman family, who will sail for a month's trip to San Francisco to attend the fair. The Caswell family will re main in their, cottage for several weeks longer. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Wiley, who have been passing the week at the Glass cottage In .Gearhart, also sail to day for San Francisco. Peter Wiley will remain with his grandmother, Mrs. Graham Glass, during his parents' ab sence. FETE HOLDS SEASIDE INTEREST Some of Vacationists Leave to Pre pare for School. SEASIDE, Or., Sept. 4. (Special.) Gaiety reigned over the entire little city Saturday night, the streets and beach front were converted Into a fes tival center, and the carnival spirit took hold on the crowds. The streets were thronged with merrymakers, who danced and frolicked away the even ing's hours amid a blaze of lights, and to the blare of trumpet and the beat of drums. As soon as the big vaudeville show was over, the stage being erected on the main veranda of the hotel, and the lawn used as an auditorium, the or chestra was transferred to the side veranda, where the dancers enjoyed the novelty of flitting over pavement pre pared with soapstone. making It an ex cellent dancing surface. The event was a memorable one in Seaside, never has the colony of Sum mer visitors entered into any function here with such avidity, all of which meant success for the salt cairn monu ment. One of the most delightful and ar tistic affairs of the season at the Colo nial Grill was the dinner dance given Wednesday by Mr. and Mrs. A. Kellett, of Spokane, -for Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Burns, also of Spokane, who have been summering in the McCraken cottage. Covers were placed for 17. and the table decorations were unusually pretty and artistic A charming arrangement of garden flowers arranged in bouton niere fashion, ranging from a large bouquet to the tiny ones, including delicate tones of pinks, lavenders, blues and rose, was used on the table. Misses Lucille Dunne and Clara Quinn were hostesses for the card party given weeklv for the benefit of the Catholic Church at Seaside. These parties are given on Thursdays at Knights of Pythias Hall and each week several prominent Summer visitors and residents act as hostesses for the oc casion. I. N. Fleischner. who was chairman of the Lewis and Clark salt cairn fund, passed the week-end at Seaside with his family. Mr. and Mrs. E. Edris, of Spokane, recently came down and opened their cottage for a few weeks. Mrs. Theodore Senn and family, who has been Summering in their cottage here, returned to Portland this week. A. G. Long, of Portland, has made final arrangements for the erecti-in of a handsome $4000 Summer home on Ocean avenue, which will be ready for occupancy next Spring. Dr. L. E. Briscoe, of Seaside, is en tertaining Mrs. M. Bolter. Mrs Doris Bolter, of Portland, and Mrs. George Bolter and daughter, of Roseburg, all of whom motored to Seaside early in the week. Mr. an3 Mrs. Harrison Fisher and Miss Josephine Seger of Portland, ar rived in Seaside last week en route from the fair in San Francisco, and visited during the week with Mrs. II. O. Wentworth. W. K. Smith, Jr., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harker Smith. Mrs. E. A. West and small son. Barton Gilder West, are also guests of Mrs. Smith. Madame Marie Micheli, member of the Van den Berg English Grand Opera Company, was soloist at the salt cairn vaudeville Saturday. Madame Marchelli Vellaire was hon ored with a pretty tea dance Sunday afternoon at the Moore Hotel, for which Mrs. Dan J. Moore was hostess. Madame Marie Micheli and Mrs. Robert W. Schmeer shared honors at the event. Lovely baskets of garden flowers were arranged about the room and the guests, numbering about 30, included those who assisted Mrs. Moore at the big entertainment, as well as several others from Gearheart and Seaside. Mrs. W. R. Montgomery, Jamestown, Kan., and Miss Carrie Montgomery, with Mrs. W. B. Torry and son, of Boise, Idaho, are domiciled in a cot tage here for several weeks. Mrs. Earl C. Ocean Lake activities have less ened somewhat during: the past week, but there are still many people taking: advantage of the fine weather and ideal conditions here. The many owners of Sumrner homes generally visit here during September, so the cottagers' life is still entertaining. Miss Helen Morgan, who left here early last month for the California ex positions, has returned to her Summer quarters 'at the Scott Bozorth cottage. A. C. Hauck, of Portland, is a guest at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Knisley for a week. Miss Hazel Sullivan, Michael Glenn, W. E. Smiley and wife, of Portland, are quartered for a week at the Tompsett camp. Dr. and Mrs. L. C. McCabe and Harry McCabe, and Mrs. M. Fiske, of Portland, motored in last week for a few days1 camping at Tompsett's. V Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Conrad, Mr. and Mrs. R. Reynolds and Mr. and Sirs. D. C. Dudley and daughter, of Portland, ar rived by auto recently for a few days at this place. B. S. Cook, of Portland, accompanied by Alfred C. Crook, motored in for a week's camping. B. C. Sparks, of Ames, Okla., are domiciled at the Tomp sett camp for a few days' recreation. SE.W1EW VISITORS 'GO OX TRIP Trip Is. Made to Bear Hirer; 16 Miles Distant. , SEAVIEW. Wash., Sept. 4. (Special.) A jolly outing to Bar River was en joyed by a group of young peoi-le chaperoned by G. Thorsen, of Portland, last weekend. The trip was made in wagons as far as the Cutting ranch and then packs were put on the horses and the remainder of the journey, two miles, was made on foot. All food and other provisions must be carried into the Bear River country over an Indian trail. The county is beautiful and rugged and offers many lovely spots for the camper. The river is deep enough for rowing and canoeing at high tide and at low tide there are numberless deep swimming holes. Wild fruits abound. There are-blackberries, apples and wild plums, which are a welcome addition to ordinary camp fare. The distance from Beach Center is about 16 miles and can be made in about five hours. Those who took the trip with Mr. Thorsen were Miss Marie Brady. Miss Viola Thorsen, Miss Helen Thorsen, .Miss Marvel Case. Miss Mil dred Seufert, Miss Florence Holmes, George Conway, Warren Thorsen and Adrian Wildman. Dr. George Storey is expected to visit Maxwell Mears. who owns a large ranch on Beach River, during the hunting season. Harry Fischer was 'a weekend house guest at the pretty cottage of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Green. . Miss Edythe Flora, who has been visiting Miss Elcena Green, went this week to Mendel, where sjie will stay with her aunt. Mrs. Thomas Brigham. Milton Gevurtz and Harry Gevurtz are passing the remainder of the sea son with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. Gevurtz. at their Beach Center cottage. Harry Gevurtz is recovering from a serious illness and will doubtless re main until the middle of ttte month. Arthur Hoffman. of Portland, is spending a week at Sunset Hotel. In merry camp quarters. Carl Knud- son and Hefty Gould, of Portland, are spending several days. Knudson is one of Lincoln High School's star baseball players. Miss Margaret Schacht entertained Miss Ethel Morris over the weekend at the Schacht home. "Summerland." Miss Morris is spending the Summer in a cottage at Ocean Park. W. A. Williams was numbered among the men who passed t&e weekend with their families. Mrs. J. O. Gibson, Jr.. and Mrs. J. M. Perrin and her son, Alfred Stone, over the weekend at her cottage. In her pretty home among the pines, Mrs. Fred Johnston is making a short stay. Mrs. George Sheran and son, of Los Angeles, ere the house guests of Mrs. Ben Green. Miss Marie Boylerson. of Chicago, was the guest of Mrs. Green for the weekend. Mrs. T. H. Getzelman and charming daughters, Doris and Ruth, of Hamp shire, 111., and Miss Edna Greene, of Chicago, were house guests of Mrs. M. G. Thorsen over the weekend. NEWPORT ARRIVALS COXTINTE Newcomers Make T."p for School and Hop Field Exodus. NEWPORT, Or.. Sept. 4. (Special.) The opening of the public schools throughout the state and hop-picking in the Valley are jointly responsible for the considerable decrease in Newport's seasonal population during the' past week. For the weather is still delight ful and the attractions are just as en ticing as ever. And yet. in spite of the great number of departures, a number of people are arriving daily, and that a good-sized crowd will come during the month is confidently expected by Newporters. The week, with its uninterrupted good weather, has seen the same ac tivity that has characterized the entire season. There has been no end to the beach parties, fishing trips and excur sions. Surf bathing, the principal di version of the seaside, is still popular because of the continual sunshine. The new road from Falls City through the Siletz Basin to Newport has been much frequented by automo biles during the week. The distance by this route to the Valley is 20 miles shorter than the King's Valley route, and abounds with excellent scenery. The road leads through the Siletz Res ervation and the famous Siletz timber belt, where the opportunities for hunt ing are very good. Judge and Mrs. J. W. Hamilton, daughter. Miss Helen, and son, Seth. ffho have been passing the Summer Huckaby cottage at Nye Beach, de parted Thursday for their home In Roseburg. 'Squire Farrar, former postmaster of Salem, and Mrs. Farrar are among the Wednesday arrivals at- the Abbey and are registered from Portland. Joseph Patterson, of Portland, was included among the week's departures from the beach. Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Barnes, of Salem, arrived the first of the week for a brief sojourn at the New Cliff House. Washougal is represented at this re sort by C. J. Clapp, who is registered at the Copeland. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Smith and daugh ters, Bessie and Alletta, of Burns, are listed among the new arrivals and are in a cottage at Sea Crest for an indef inite stay. Alleth Neill comes from Chippewa Falls, Wis., to enjoy the pleasures of this beach. Miss Neill is staying at the Nicolai. Duane Gibson is among the recent Capital City arrivals at the Borden Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McEiroy, who have been summering at Nye Beach in one of the Rose City cottages, have gone to Yacolt for a brief visit. A. Simpkins and his mother and grandson, Verna, are among the late Summering arrivals at the McAllister.
