W followed th highway south through Oregon a far as Gold HI1L At th latter point w turned off for Crater Lak. This was on Wolf Crack bill, beyond Glendale, where th road drop down a per cent grade round a bluff. Th road from Grants' Pass on to Madford Is very good, though badly cut la places by th number of cars passing ovr It. Th road to Cratar Lak I excellent- Our sturdy llttl Studebaker twenty, though heavily loaded, took us nearly all ch way up th grade on the high and Interme diate gear. n W had a delightful camp by th iim of th lake, with scores of othei tourists from all sections ot th coua -ry. It rained on as all on bight while at th lak. but this only mad next morning's vlw of th lak more beau tiful. All w hav sera on th long rip. even th exposition with its Tower of Jewels aad its thousands of wonders could not compare with that marvelous plctur revealed to us when th sua care up over Crater Lak. The railway which scales the sides of Tamalpais has earned the name of being the most crooked road in the world. There are scarcely 100 yards ef straight track in the . nine-mile course, which meant constant watcji fulness on tbe part of tbe driver. Added to the uncertain route was the tremendous strain on the car, caused by bumping over the ties. Probably no stiller test was ever administered to the springs of a car, but Driver Col lins came through without a broken leaf In any of the four springs. Starting from Mill Valley, at the foot of the mountain. Collins drove the Dodge Bros.' ear on train schedule time to tbe summit, checking in at each station en route. In order to prevent colliding with any of the regular train service. Grades varying from 6 to 15 per cent were encountered at varioua stages, but it was never necessary to use first gear except In starting, the trip being made on Intermediate and high. Ball, principal of the Franklin High School, who has just completed trip to San Diego in a Studebaker. has written from San Diego the following interesting and descriptive letter A. 6. Johnson, bf the Oregon Motor Car Company, local Studebaker dealers: "It occurred to me that you might be interested in the Journey we are mak ing in our Studebaker. We left PortlauJ July 21, and have visited cities and towns, colleges, universities and expositions. We have climbed mountains and crossed rivers bridges, ferries and by fording. W have ascended a single hill eight miles in length; we nave gone up a cr&d where the ascent was 2000 feet in two miies. weu tnat is just a little oi our experience and we have formed the opinion that the Studebaker Is the best car made. 'California allows only to miles per hour on her country roads, but we know our btudebaker can make 45 miles per hour on those roads with her th rot tin only a little more than halt open. In hill-climbing we have used high and Intermediate gears mostly, using low gear very little. , I had tbe bearings all cleaned and greased In Los Angeles, but it wasn't necessary, as everything was found to be in first-class condition. "Our meter now reads 2119.6 miles. and we have about 1800 more to go be fore we reach home. Our trip from Portland to San Fran cisco averaged IS miles to a gallon of gasoline. From Los An geles to San Diego we averaged 20 miles to a gallon no mountains to speak of. vv e bave passed over about 500 miles of paved country road. We shall re turn by Carson City. Reno and Eastern Oregon, and expect to start north the 12th." JOSEPH M'TOTEE PROMOTED Veteran Auto Man Takes Charge of Willys-Knight Sales Division. Joseph H. McDuffee, veteran In th au tomobile field, has the distinction of having been manager of the first re tail automobile salesroom in America and has been continuously In tbe au tomobile business since. A few months ago be was chosen by John N. Willys to take charge of the newiy-formed wmys-Knight dl- ision of the Willys-Overland Company in the marketing of tbe new sleeve- valve motor cars produced by that company. Now comes the news of his appointment as assistant sales man ager of their entire organization. As the present poduction of the Willys-Overland Company is soon to be 600 cars a day and their dealer or-: ganization has reached the 4000 mark.', the appointment of Mr. McDuffee will ' come as a welcome aid to Sales Man ager Harry B. Harper in the executive : work Incident to- marketing this hug production. Incidentally, it must bring some odd comparisons with the time when He Duffee's was the only shop on Broadway. PAVTXG IX PARK PROGRESSES All Records for Travel at Crater . Lake Already Broken. MED FORD, Or, Aug. 21 (Special.) , By the end of the present season 40 miles of highways will have been graded by the Government in tbe Cra terter Lake National Park, leaving ap proximately 25 miles to be graded and the entire system to be hard-surfaced. Engineer W. S. Goodwin, of the War Department, declares that an appro priation of 6100,060 will be asked next year for the hard surfacing of the main traveled roads, Warrenite type of ; bithulithic being used for a width ot -15 feet. From 180 to 200 men are how em ployed on tbe new roads extending from the new Jackson County entrance to Anna Creek, from the eastern en trance to Sand Creek from Anna Creek to the tavern. All records to the lake for travel are being broken this year, the total to date being 5500, with 1100 automo biles. Last year at this time the total was 3800 visitors and 700 automobiles.
