NEW YORK, Sept. 20. In the rotunda of the City Hall, the scene of his years of labor for the municipality, whose executive "he was, the body of William J. Gaynor lies in state tonight, his cof fin draped in the white silken folds of the Mayors official flay and watched over by a guard of honor from the city's police and firemen. The Mayor's body landed here yes terday from the liner Lusitanla and taken to his late home 'in Brooklyn. where private funeral services were held today, was brought tonight through a drizzling rain to the City Hall, from the steps where, less than three weeks ago, he accepted a people s nomination for re-election as mayor. Tens of thousands crowded about the edifice and its approaches tonight and stood mute, heads bared and bowed, paying silent tribute as his body was borne Into the building. City Hall to Be Opto. The doors of the City Hall will be opened tomorrow at 8 o'clock and from that hour until sunset, or later, two separate lines of citizens will have op portunity to pass from the plaza -in front of the building past the coffin on its bier in the somberly-draped ro tunda, and on out through the north entrance after gazing on the dead Mayor's features. On Monday the pub lic funeral will be held In Old Trinity Church. The private services In the Gaynor home were held two hours before he body was brought to Manhattan, the little gathering there including only Immediate members of the family and a few close friends. Tribute Persoaal and Sincere. The clergyman's tribute was person al and Intimate. No one knew the man Gaynor better than the speaker Himself, Rev. Mr. Page said, and bis eulogy of the late Mayor's character and good deeds was a heartfelt mes sage of consolation to the mourning family and friends. The city had lost its best servant when Mayor Gaynor died. Rev. Mr. Pago concluded, and later its people probably would realise this and do In this memory what the people of Cleveland bad done In Tom Johnson's erect a monument to him. Promptly at 4 o'clock 200 mounted policemen stood at attention outside as the coffin containing the body of the Mayor was carried from the house by firemen and policemen and placed in the hearse, while departmental heads and members of the Board of Estimate, acting as escort, stood with bared heads. The funeral made its slow way to New York across the Brooklyn bridge. Loyal Tributes Overwhelming. At least 60,000 persons stood un covered in the drizzling rain as the procession marched to the City Hall Eight automobiles following the hearse carried members of the Board of Esti mate, Mayor Kline, Robert Adamson, the late Mayor's secretary; R. A. C. Smith, Commissioner of Docks and Ferries, and Police Commissioner Wal do. No members of the Mayor's family accompanied the body. All during the day vehicles drove up to the Gaynor home with floral of ferings and it was necessary to employ two automobiles to carry the flowers when the procession started. fully defended her property for three days, was taken to the county Jail to day and locked up on a charge of re sisting an officer. Her bail was fixed at $1000, which she was unable to furnish. The deputies were seeking to place a $500 attachment on three hayricks. when they were halted by a shotgun. They used strategy to Induce Mrs.. Plet to enter the barn, where they cornered and disarmed her. Then she fought them off with a club, which was taken from her only after she had felled two of them to the ground. Mrs Plet gave her Husband S500 a few months ago to go to Oakland and buy seed and farm implements. In stead, it is said, he spent the money In a good time, and came to San Fran cisco, where he borrowed $500 to "make good with his wife. The money lender appeared at the Plet farm several days ago with a Con stable and a writ of attachment on the hayricks, saying that Plet had not paid the loan.
