The paying of j Sewage System to Cover Big Area in Milwaukie street, which at present is the only open street to Westmoreland and Sellwood, will be a great boon to this One, large section of the city. In Westmoreland sewers are being laid In all the streets, preparatory to laying the hard-surface pavements, for which contracts have been let. The paving will cost above $100,000. The Maiden avenue street district, which Is part of Sellwood, wljl be paved at once. The cost of this Improvement will be $35,000, and will be the first hard-surface pavement to ba laid In Hell wood. Plans for a big trunk sewer nnder the south portion of Sellwood have been prepared.-' This sewer will drain Westmoreland, Eastmoreland and Sell wood. The programme for Improve ments In this district. Including streets and sewers, for this year lsa large and expensive one, and runs above $500,000. There Is a substantial building move ment under way through this district. The two-story pressed brick building for J. R. Zlrnglebel on East Thirteenth street, Sellwood, la nearlng completion. It Is one of the best and most attrac tive structures In this suburb. The additions between Milwaukie street and the Willamette River are being built up with attractive homes. The Benedictine Heights Addition, which was formerly a vacant tract owned by the 0.-W. R. & N, has filled up rapidly, and la now one of the best-built resi dence additions of the South East Side. The homes In this addition are all of excellent class and range In cost above $3500. The Holgate-street Addition, which .is located between Milwaukie and East Twenty-third street, has many new homes. In Westmoreland a large number of homes are being built. The extension of Grand avenue from its present end at Woodward avenue to the north line of Manhattan Heights will be a great advantage. The exten tlon follows the brink of the bluff above the Willamette River, and gives Grand avenue an' outlet to the south. The credit ol tola Improvement Is due Southeastern Part of City Cost $1,000,000. to The Consolidated Contract Company, which was awarded the contract to build the Willamette River ends of the East Stark-street and North Mount Tabor sewer, has started work at the foot of East Stark street. A section of the big pipe Is exposed at. the foot of the street- It Is six feet In diam eter and Is built of reinforced con- Crete ana stone diocks on a concrete foundation. The upper part is oval in shape, while the bottom Is flat. The bottom Is composed of a foundation of concrete, on the top of which are placed stone blocks alBO grouted in concrete. The walls of the concrete above the bottom are eight Inches thick and are strongly reinforced with steel bars. A tramway has been built above the trench and the excavated material Is lifted by buckets and tnen carried back and dumped on the com pleted section of the sewer. At present the company is tunneling under the streetcar tracks between i East Water street and Union avenue, j there being tracks on all the streets j north and south, and double tracks on i East First and East Second. Excavat- ing on East Stark promises to be ex- , tremely difficult and slow, as the J street has been Improved with macs- ' dam and Is very hard. There are two sections of this sewer. One runs from low-water mark in the Willamette River to East Twenty-first street, and the other section runs from East Twenty-first and East Forty-first streets. The total cost of these two sections will be $172,742. This sewer Is designed to drain southwest Laurel hurst and eventually Center Addition and North Mount Tabor.
