California Motorists Urged to Tarn Toward Portland for Coastwise Tour; Scenery Fine. The Victoria. B. C Automobll soclatlon has Just announced ita tentlon to tour to San Francisco to attend the Annual Pacific Highway con ventlon. held there August S, and 7. This means a representative delegation of Vancouver 'Island motorists will drive to the California metropolis for the International convention of the Fa rifle Highway Association. . The de cislon to make this event one of their club runs was reached at a recent meeting held at Victoria. With the Victoria. Seattle and Portland Clubs making the run to Ban Francisco and the possibility of having Tacoma, New Westminister and Vancouver Joining thle aggregation, the Northern motor ists 'who make the tour to California this Summer will make a very good ahowlng. Another feature that did much to imorove the Northern end of the rm ciflo Highway waa the observation of good roads day In the atate of Wash In sr ton. April II. Governor M. K. Hay toured over the worst section of the Pacific Highway In the Southwestern section and did a lot of actual con atructlon work In helping repair the road. The territory the Washington Executive covered was in Lewis and CowUti counties. In the Southern part of Lewla County, just out of Toledo, 159 men celebrated good roads day by repairing their aectlon of the Pacific Highway. This particular stretca naa been In bad condition all Winter. Complaint has been made by ad venturous mortorlsts who have made the trip between Seattle and Portland as to present conditions of the Pacific Highway. No doubt, however, with the Interest that was stirred np by the ob servanco of good roads day immediate relief will be had ami repairs will be made even though of temporary nature so that all kinds of travel can pass over the road during the coming season with comfort and safety. it WOMEN DRIVERS HAPPY XEW SELK-STARTIXG ' DEVICE IXCKEASES SAXES. ATItOXG CAR OFTEX PURCHASED Buyer Should Own Vehicle That An- srwera AH Purposes. One of the mistakes common In the automobile business Is the grave error of purchasing the wrong car Automobiles of today are vehicles of utility as well as pleasure. The buyer should pick a car that combines the two. "Ordinary caution dlctatea who should buy automobiles. says L. H. Itose. Northwest manager of the Su debaker Corporation of America, "and that same prudence la the reason why. for Instance, the Studebaker Corpora tion can prove by simple arithmetic that every day ia a financial losa to certain men if they do not use an au tomobile. - "All that la necessary to know la that a man's business requires him to move quickly from one point to an other that it Is of advantage to him to do bis work quicker, cheaper and better and It increases Its volume In given period. Jf time. "Salesmen need the motor car. It In creases their efficiency by greater con tact with prospects. Collectors can cover more ground. Physicians are the greatest users of automobiles; tbetr patients get prompt treatment. In the harvest time the farmer can get over ground in the same day it formerly re quired several. The real estate man meets his prospective owner at the station, whisks them off to the prop erty, covering twice the ground and handling twice the number of pros pects " AUTOMOBILE CALENDAR OUT Former Method of Cranking Ma chine Xow Entirely Unnecessa - ry on the Hudson "3S." Women, as drivers of motor cars, this Spring have arrived in earnest. Approximately twice the numoer ox women drivers of automobiles will ap pear at the wheels or nign-powerea cars this Summer, for reports from motor oar headquarters throughout the county show there are double the num ber of women purchasers of new sexr- startlng as there were for 1911 cars. which had to bo cranked. News to this effect, compiled from re ports from all sections of the United States, recently reached O. E. McCarthy. In addition It Is stated that there has been a surprising Increase In the num ber of motor car licenses issued by .uthorltles since the coming of the "cranklesa" automobile era. The first American woman .of Na tlonal prominence to take the guidance of her car upon her own shoulders was Mrs. Frank J. Gould, or New York, a member of one of Gotham's oldest fami lies. Mrs. Gould became owner and driver of a new self-starting Hudson '33 the first of the year, and since that time hundreds of women In many sec tions of the United States have as sumed the same role. -" While women are known to be the final factors in the decisions of heads of families to own automobiles, a wo man driving her own car has been un usual up to a short time ago. Now, however, the drudgery that accom panied the work of starting the motor has been done away with by the self- starter and that has made it possible for women to drive their own cars, for there Is no work to do. The mere pressure of a button starts the car from the seat. It Is as easy as ringing an electric bell. There la no necessity In getting out in front of the car and going through the exhaustive work of cranking the motor a doxen times or more In order to start It. The "crankless" automobile era. with It freedom from the cranking drudge ry, has greatly enlarged the province of t,he automobll In modern transportation. Auto Club of TWO-POINT MAGNETO FAVORED Charles Splltdorf Explain How It Gives Increased Auto Power. "It Is an established fact, proven to the satisfaction of all who have given It a fair trial, that the double distrib utor magneto gives Increased power to the automobile equipped with It. and many of the leading manufacturers, like the Pope-Hartford and National companies, are adopting this type of Ignition." said Charlea F. Splftdorf. of tbe Camous Splltdorf Ignition labora tories. A single spark calls for an approxi mate advance or 10 degrees at the max imum power developed, but the actual advance Is reduced 15 degrees. Owing to the twin sparks obtained and firing simultaneously, the compressed charge Is Ignited quicker and from both sides of the cylinder, thus burning the charge quicker and also tending to expand it more completely. He has motored all over the West and declares that the trip to Oregon Is the most delightful one on the Pacific Coast. . Tbe accessory dis tributor Is . doing great missionary work in boosting for CalifornJa-Ore gon touring and takes evrry available opportunity to boost It,. The following Is from a Los Angeles paper: i"Of all the trips I have taken on the Pacific Coast, the one to Portland has been the most Interesting," says Mr. Halliwell. "The route takes one through a country rich In agricultural resources and with miles of beautiful tlmberland. All the way north from San Francisco the trip Is wonderful beyond be'lef. "Motorists who have been over the road and do not want to waste four days on the run between Los Angeles and San Francisco csn do it easly In three days by starting early each morning. "The more adventurous who like to hurry can go up In two days. Those who go In two days must get an early start out of Los Angele and cannot waate much time In stopping for lunch Figure making San Luis Obispo for dinner and driving the 40 miles over the mountalna to Paso nobles tnat night to sleep. An early start out of Paao Robles would enable you to make San Francisco the next night. If no bad luck Is encountered. Of course, such a trip means that the driver must hurry the car every minute, and there can be little sightseeing stops along the road. "A wonderful country lies north of San Francisco, and all Calirornlans should see It,. Motorists are not getting full enjoyment out of their cars if they do not make these long trips. A great many men will drive from 8000 to 10.000 miles a year on the city streets and in going. to the beaches, but will never think of making a 500-mlle trip for a Summer vacation. There Is no greater pleasure than driving leisurely through, a country which is entirely new to you and each night have mountain resort hotels for stopping places, or camping out on some beautiful spot. Some people prefer the comfort of a hotel, while others find more enjoyment In camping under the trees, living entirely In the great out door. Summer vacation time will soon be "here and now Is the time to plan these trips. Half of the fun Is In talking over the different available Jaunts. Among the trips which suggest themselves first are as follows: Los Angeles to San Diego. Lakeside and Tia Juana: Los Angeles to ban Francisco over the coast route; Los An geles to San Francisco over the val ley road; Los Angele. to Portland; Los Angeles to Yosemlte Valley and all the Intermediate trips. I am willing to aid motorists every way In my power In planning tneae trips, snd any Information which I do not have on hand I will be able to ser cure from the different branch mana gers Of the Halliwell Company.", XEW GOLF LIST INTERESTING N'ew York and Chicago In Lead for Championship Ratines. NEW YORK. April 20. As showing the relative strength of the -several golfing sections and cities of this coun try, nothing) more lucid has ever been placed before the public than the Na tional rating list, recently jssuea oy the United States Golf Association. The work of the handlcappers. Indeed, forms an Interesting study and brings forc ibly to observation that while New York and Chicago would seem to be engaged In a breakneck race for su premacy. Philadelphia and Boston are being sadly outdistanced. That such should be the case Is all the more remarkable, considering that both cities are veritable hotbeds of golf. The Massachusetts Association, which has been In existence something like 12 years, and may, therefore, be safely said to have long ago cut all its teeth, admits a minority of only ten clubs, or fewer, to the Metropolitan Golf Association. As the latter body has a membership of more v than 60 clubs, evidence Is not wanting that lying about the outskirts of the Hub are all the facilities for the fostering of the champions of the links.
