Twenty-seven cars, three of which were commercial vehicles and one electric started -from Indianapolis and made tha run through Indjana. Illin ois, Missouri and Iowa. The route waa through beautiful rich country, and nearly every Important city In each of th four states was visited by th fac tory men. In the party were four of th na tion' best racing driver. Johnny Altken and Howard Wilcox of the Na tional team, and Johnny Jenkins and H. N. Rlrhey .the one-arm driver of the Cole. Altken drove the pilot car. while Jenkins piloted the press ma chine. Flatt Stone's Packard 30" rolled Into Frank Rigs' garag early last week the cyclometer regis tered 15.281 mile, representing a cross- continent, trip from Baltimore that be gan early in May, And despite Its long. Journey over roads that in spots were. lmost -impassable, tne Dig touring car showed little signs of the icear and tear of tha long trip and- needed .but a few minor adjustments. Accompany ing Mrs. Stone were her nephew, Wil liam D.' Piatt, Jr., her maid and a chauffeur. '- ; The Maryland party made its 'way Ielsurefy across the country,'- staying a week' in Chicago and a' like period in. Salt Lake City.' Numerous short stays were made at other places, Mrs. Stone being unable to stand the strain of continuous riding. Leaving Portland after a short stay, the tourists started for Santa Barbara, intending- to halt at Sacrameno and San Francisco. Mrs. Stone will enjoy a long rest. at the California' seaside resort and will continue on her home ward Journey. She will go East via th Southern statea and will take the op portunity of 4olng considerable touring In Southern California. Although she has motored through almost every country in Europe, trav eled extensively In Asia and Africa, this Is Mrs. 'Stone's first trip across the .American continent. She was enthusi astic in praising the many delightful scenes she raw on the overland trip and declared that America offers just as picturesque and varied scenery as any place she has ever seen. - Speaking of road conditions over the territory she motored .Mrs. Stone said they were much finer than one Im agines. ' ' "Of course, there were many rough epots," she eaid,:"but considering the number of. miles we traveled and the out-of-the-way places we visited, the highways were fine." I was much Im pressed with the delightful scenery la Wyoming, Montana.'
